Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

697, mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord, 6 9 70. For the past 8 weeks, because this is number 9 this evening, for the past 8 weeks we have been looking at this matter of depression. And we have looked at the cause, or the causes of depression. Some people are depressed continually because of the fear of death. And we went into this very carefully one evening, and let this class see that our Lord was sovereign, even over death, and over everything and everyone in connection with death. And then some people are upset, in fact they are tormented in mind, and oppressed, and depressed, and distracted, than just grievously that, because of one particular sin that they had committed. I had a lady in with me this morning, and she said the other day, well you just said one sin, that one sin. Another lady in the meeting said to me, that terrid, haunting sin that I committed. So many, you know, lie and talk, and wish that they had, they had never committed it. And we saw the cure for that here one evening. Because we are not only looking at the causes, we are finding the cure every time. Some people are depressed because other people speak evil of them. And on the grapevine you hear what somebody has said about you, behind your back, and some people can't take it. And we have gone through that in this class. And then one evening I dealt with the storms of life. And there are satanical storms in life, tyrannical storms in life, where terrorists try to upset them. And we have gone through all this. And now we are to the spot in the class, where we are looking up the mummiful testimony. Because Peter said, when he talked about God's so great salvation, he said, when he gratefully rejoiced, and then he uttered quickly, draw now for us even if need be. We are in heaviness through mummiful testings. And we are going into these mummiful testings, and the first avenue of these mummiful testings that we are looking at is false teaching. Because I know that so many people have been upset and confused. In fact, some have ended in mental homes because of false teaching. And so we are going into it. And you remember last week, let's go back and recap just one minute. We have Galatians, chapter 1. Letter to the Galatians, chapter 1. And Paul starts the chapter just like this. Paul. And I like that bit. Because he just calls himself Paul. And this is the gift that they had, an apostle. Not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ. And God the Father who raised them from the dead. And all the brethren which are with me on to the statues of Galatia. Because there were quite a number of statues formed, right throughout the region of Galatia. And he's writing to all these statues, saying, Great be to you and peace from God the Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who giveth himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Now, when he got the salutation over to them, and he did it very quickly in this letter, then he really starts talking to them. And he talks sharply. He says, I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ on to another gospel. You know, he knew that they were shifting, and shifting away from Christ. And it was Paul's teachers that was doing this, as we shall see. He says that all thee, or an angel from heaven, preached any other gospel on to you other than that which we have preached on to you, let him be accursed. And then we come to this chapter in chapter 2, Galatians 2. Then 14 years after, I went up to Jerusalem with Barnabas. He took Titus with me also. And I went on my revelation. The Lord sent them, and communicated on to them that gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to them, which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run or have run and fain. But neither Titus, who was with me being evil, was compelled to be circumcised. You see, this is what the trouble was here. There were people coming to the church of Angelusia. And they were preaching another gospel. They were preaching, except thee be circumcised, you cannot be saved. Now, just to make the young ones sure of that, let me look at the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 15. The Acts of the Apostles, chapter 15. And if you like to look through 13 and 14 sometime, you will find that it was there that Paul went to the cities of Galatia, and the churches were formed. And when Paul had moved on, in chapter 15, it says, On certain men which came down from Judea, taught the brethren and said, except thee be circumcised, after the manner of mortals, you cannot be saved. And that must be another gospel. And I think, you know, we are living in such an enlightened age, that if I got up here and said to you, All you believers, you men, folks, except ye be circumcised, you cannot be saved. I think you would throw me out. And I think you would be perfectly right. You see, this is arguing a little bit to this glorious gospel. And this was Judaism. And they did come down, you know, and they did teach these people at Galatia, and they upset them. Let's go back again to Galatians, chapter 1, and see now what he is saying. You see, verse 6, I marvel that the Apostles should remove from him the call to enter the grace of Christ onto another gospel, which is not another. But there be some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. Now, these are the boys that I'm tackling these nights, the boys that trouble the young believers, and the boys that pervert the gospel. And I'm determined to do it, with all the might and fury and force that the Lord will give me, because this goes on still today, you know. You see, if you turn over to chapter 3 of Galatians, you'll find this, that he has to say to them, O foolish Galatians, who have bewitched you. Oh, that's what these troublers and perversers do to young believers. They come along and say, you know, it's true that you're saved and blessed and you've got Christ, but there's something more that you need, or you'll not be right at all. And sometimes they bewitch young believers, and they lead them up an alley looking for perfect holiness, or something like that. And then the young fellow goes up it for a week or two, and finds out he's still the same six and eightsons that he was before he started. And then he's confused. And then he doesn't know whether he's saved or not now. And he loses all the joy and peace that God gave him. And I'm against this. So I'm real against this. You see, if you go into the fourth chapter of Galatians, this is what Paul said to these Galatians. See, verse 15, because I'm only taking a little bit, because we mustn't waste time here. Where is then the blessedness he is speaking of? They'd lost the blessing. There was once upon a time when they were gloriously saved, had embraced Christ, that they were so happy. They'd lost the joy. They'd lost the peace. They'd lost the thrill. It is where is then the blessedness that you speak of? For I bear you record that if it had been possible, you would have crossed out your own eyes and given them to me. You see, I think that Paul had this thought in the flesh, this cynical affliction. He was nearly blind. And these Galatians were so happy of being saved that they would have plucked out their eyes and given them to him. I was going into the royal one day when Sir Ian Fraser was coming up. And he knows me. He says, hello Willie, how are you doing? I want to ask you about transplant. I fancy Sir Ian Fraser wanting to know about transplant from me. I would think he knows a lot about it. He said, do you agree with it? Well, I said, you know, if you could give a fellow a kidney or a heart that would give him a day or two longer that he might be saved, I have no problem. I'm not so sure about the believers, Sir. What makes you not so sure? I said, well, you see, Paul was sort of blind. And this was his thought in the flesh. And he prayed to the Lord, Lord, take this thing away and give me sight and let me loose as it were. Oh, but it wasn't the Lord's mind at all. See where I'm getting around to? You know, if you've got eyes and the Lord didn't want you to get them, you'd be in a fix, wouldn't you? He says, don't talk to me anymore. On your way. I said, you just do your job and I'll just do mine. Well, be careful now. Yes, you know, you might get a leg off and get another one on. You might have a redeemed leg on one side and a non-redeemed one on the other side. Oh, we must not go into this deceitfully here. Oh, no. It's what we're really after is that false teachers come sometimes and by false teaching they pervert the gospel, first of all, and they trouble the believers and they delude them and they make fools out of them and they take away their peace and love. And there are so many avenues that we can take and we will take them. We'll have to look at what the Mormons say and what some of this damnable heresies of the Roman Catholic Church say and you Romans will come and bring your Bibles, won't you? Because we have no notion of self-pebbling anything for anyone. Oh, damnable heresies, many. And I have found out that false teachers go along two lines. First of all, they deny certain things. I can find in some of the modernists and they deny the deity of our Lord Jesus and they deny the sinless presumption of Christ and they deny the atoning death of Christ and they deny the bodily resurrection of Christ and we can get all that brought in and all this crap. But false teachers don't only go along that line, a line of denying things. The other line is that they come declaring things. They declare, you know. Oh, yes, you are saved. Bless you. That's great. You've got the Lord. I can see it in your face. But, what do you need? And we're talking about these tongues tonight. And what a lot of crap we hear about this too. If you're mixed up in it, sit still and look at the book for once. Because I can tell you some stories about it. A fella came here to tackle me once and I took him aside in there and said, put your Bible on the table and I'll put mine. And we'll look at every phrase in this book in connection with it. And when I started to explain, he said, I'm not going to talk to you anymore. You listen to my experience. I'll shoot you through the door and you'll start talking tricks louder. I'm to put my Bible away and listen to his experience, am I? What would you like me to do? And I'll tell you what he did. He went to his own church the next morning and said, I put my Bible down and tied Mr. Mooren up in a knot. He's a liar. Some holiness above that, isn't there? You want to get his name? And where he goes to? There's Don Fushman. Yes, we're going to have a look at this thing this evening. This so-called gift of tongues bringing confusion and recession. The unbelievers want to forget. Well, we're just about to start now. Let's go over to 1 Corinthians and we're at chapter 12, please. 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 Just watch the book and if I make any mistakes you're at liberty to come talk to me afterwards and watch it carefully Paul's speaking through the chapter 10 and at chapter 12 and verse 1 he's saying now concerning spiritual gifts Brethren it's not always injected that word just to keep him on the level so that he knew he wasn't talking to enemies talking to God's children now concerning spiritual gifts, Brethren I would not have you ignorant you know that you were Gentiles carried away oh, there's a phrase I should preach on some Sunday morning carried away a lot of folk get carried away at times carried away onto these dumb idols even as you were led and so because in the Gentile days because they were carried away to bow down to sticks and stones he was afraid of them getting carried away again that's why he's talking to them wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus a Christian you would know that and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost now there are diversities of gifts a whole lot of gifts, you know they all come from the same Spirit Holy Spirit, capital S it says, verse 7 but the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal for to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit to another faith by the same Spirit and we're not talking about the faith that you believe with just now I know it's a gift from God we're talking about the gift of faith now we're talking about spiritual gifts and you know there is the gift of hope you see Hudson Taylor had the gift of hope he founded the China Inland Mission and he learned from God just to trust God properly and he had this gift he walked out in faith and just trusted God and God did mighty things for him and George Mueller had the gift of faith you know he founded the Orphan's Home and he never asked anyone for a penny in his life nor made an appeal nor sent out a letter and he got over six million pounds just by faith now I know that there are some folks who try to copy this and go to do it and want to do it and get into it but they haven't got the gift of faith or they collapse halfway through because you haven't got the gift of faith and don't belong to now see because I'm afraid we're going to get into tight corners and you're not going to get out of it remember there is faith which is a gift from God remember there is the gift of faith which is different altogether we're talking about the gift now first time to another faith by the same spirit to another the gift there's an aspect of healing one of these nights I'll go into that for you and do it properly won't let anybody talk to you about the gift of healing because it is not here the gift of healing and I'll tell you why one night it's very wonderful to another the working of medicals and you can see the gifts of healing and the working of medicals are quite different they are indeed you know you see when Paul came to a certain man who was lame he perceived that he had faith to be healed of course this is one of the gifts of healing you can perceive it yourself as good faith but we're not going into this tonight because there are lots of subjects because when you come to medicals if the man's dead like Lazarus he can't have faith can he you'll have borrowed faith from him won't you now you've got to raise him it's a mighty miracle oh we'll do all this for you because I think all these things upset people to another the working of medicals to another prophecy to another discerning of spirits to another remember another diverse kinds of tongues and the word tongues there is the old word for languages diverse kinds of languages to another the interpretation of these languages now you see these are the gifts now look at verse 28 as we're trying to save time all the time because our brother's gone away about 7 o'clock in the morning and I wouldn't like to keep this reading till the quarter to seven verse 28 now watch this carefully and God hath set some in the church first apostles also some folks treatment of this class they are they millenialists one of them tried to tell me the other day you know that the church began right back in Eden's garden I just don't know how you make it out at all and that the church was in the Old Testament would you like to come around and tell me if the church was in the Old Testament how the apostles got set it's an easy one that church is more when you come around how did they get set that's the thing oh no the church began at Pentecost and God put the apostles first so the church was built on the foundation of the apostles when our Lord Jesus went home to heaven he became the head of the church if the church is in the Old Testament it must have been there without a head or a foundation either oh you know I can drop so many lines here but look at this God had set some in the church first apostles second only prophets because there were prophets in the early church you know there was a long time before they had a New Testament and they met in homes and they met in meeting houses but they had no New Testament and they had no hymn books yeah but the prophets were there and they stood up in the morning meeting and they directed the believers with New Testament truths before the New Testament even came it was only there until the New Testament was written you see God had set some in the church first apostles second only prophets clearly teachers and if I'm right that the apostles and prophets have gone then the teachers very important that's why I think you're here spite of the bombings, the barriers and everything else that's why we've kept this going for 25 years because God one day when he saves me be the creature like me the gift of teaching is booked and it's very important because it's the gift that's most needed I can go to any part of the world and gather a crowd who want to hear God's word last week in London I preached for 2 hours and 10 minutes so you see what I can do when I try and when I said to the folks I said are you tired everybody just on the set not a thought go on go on you know when he cooks me to go on you're asking for trouble no I don't think it's anything about me or anything like that I think it's just the word of God being explained and you can see it and you can follow it and that's it and God helped me to do it and that's that now God has sent some in the church, first apostles second only prophets, thirdly teachers after that medicals and we put medicals by and teachers then gifts ask again please of any help government diversity of the tongue the last you know led to a lot of raving about it and the false preachers come round now we're starting on them and they say you know it's good you're saved and bless God you look saved and all the rest but unless you get this baptism of the spirit and you're able to speak in tongues you'll never enjoy the thing, it's false I shall prove it's false you see these Trump preachers that go round doing this, I'll tell you this they want every believer to talk in tongues talk but only they want them now just sit now tight now and answer the question friends, though I know some of you are here I'll butter the life out of you before you leave here tonight with the word of God of course and unless you're the person then I think you're a fool here are a few questions for you to answer are all apostles? you think that everybody in the church of Jesus Christ are all apostles and you would know the answer is no are all prophets? do you know the answer lots of folks here would never dare to get up and say it, the answer is no are all teachers? you like to take this class over for the next two years are all workers of medicals? have all gifts of healing do all seekers come to know the answer no what are you running after the young believers for you're going to put them into a fix aren't you you're going to trouble them you're going to disturb them you're going to progress this gospel aren't you you're going to be victims you're doing the devil's work that's what you're doing that's how you learn from this book isn't it as far as you can see that's all right yes let's be absolutely clear that this gift was in the early church must never deny it was in the early church let's turn to the Acts of the Apostles chapter 2 Acts of the Apostles and we're at the second chapter are you watching and I'll do the little bit of ingesting and we'll get on fine Acts chapter 2 and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place and we're talking about all the followers of Christ who were in Jerusalem just then and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind now mind you it was not a rushing mighty wind this is the only way that Luke can describe it this sound came as of a rushing mighty wind that's all he can say it wasn't a rushing mighty wind it was as of a rushing mighty wind and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting this sound went right through this house where they were sitting not rolling on the floor did you get it? I think some of you can't read this just sitting not rolling on the floor son and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like ours of fire it wasn't fire I hear all about the fire falling the only way that he could describe this was this thing came it was like ours of fire for God changed it not allowed to change it oh we get so many sermons about fire like ours of wasn't it that's right and it sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost there is no problem of abundance yes this is the day the Holy Ghost came this is one of the great features of Pentecost that all the individual followers of the Lord Jesus and they were all sizes and shapes and ages all the individual followers of Jesus were baptised into one body at that moment and the church and at the moment that they were baptised into the body they were all filled with I want you to hear this bit very carefully and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with our tongues I think we've got to get this word tongues again you know it is the old Greek word the it's the word languages Greek language began to speak with other languages now I want you to get this bit as the spirit gave their muttering and we must hold tight for this phrase as the spirit gave the muttering so they were speaking in foreign languages and who were speaking in foreign languages spirit filled gallantly into the trust of Christ how were they speaking by the power of the Holy Ghost oh this was wonderful they were able to speak in foreign languages now I want you to get this and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues or languages as the spirit gave the mutterings and they were dwelling at Jerusalem I want you to get this word very carefully now Jews, the whole city was full of Jews, of course it was Pentecost wasn't it you see the Jews came from every land under the sun at that time they always come, they do even yet at Pentecost they come now the city was full they were dwelling at Jerusalem, devout men out of every nation under heaven, they were all different nationalities but they were Jews just to say, because you know that there are French Jews, there are German Jews, there are Russian Jews you know about that don't you well this was much the same and here they were and when it was noise the multitude came together and were confounded because that every man heard them, that is these Galileans speak in his own, oh we've got the word now haven't we language you like to mix up tongues and language now? you know what was happening don't you that all these Jews came from different lands and here they were all gathered together and these men are able to speak to them in their own language without ever having learned the language it was bound to make Jews pick up and take notice you know yes I want you to get a little bit more of this and they were there seven and they were all amazed and marvelled saying one to another, behold are not all these which speak Galilean, well they knew they were just Galilean poor Galilean fishermen and oh there was no education at all in fact it does say about Peter and John all learned ignorant men, like me can hardly speak English but able to speak a lot of languages these boys, it was wonderful really thrilling and it says here and they and when this was noise the broad the multitude came together and were confounded because that every man heard them speak in his own language and they were all amazed and marvelled saying one to another, behold are not all these which speak Galilean how here we man every man in our own tongue in our own tongue, our own language for then we were born, they were born they were scattered away from Palestine and then it gives the names of all the nationalities Carthians and Medes and Elamites the dwellers of Mesopotamia and in Judea and Cappadocia and Pontus and Asia, Persia, Pamphylia and Egypt and in the parts of Libya, Bartholomew and strangers of Rome Jews and Protozoans, men who turned over to the Jews, Cretes and Arabians and there are sixteen, I've counted them closely sixteen different nationalities we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God I want you to get this you know now who were speaking don't you, the Galileans you know they were speaking in languages every man had then speak in his own language yes they were speaking by the power of the Holy Ghost, it must have been the Holy Ghost they were speaking the wonderful works of God remember you see when people would stand out and speak to some of these people from Mesopotamia in the Mesopotamia dialect or language and tell them about the wonderful works of God through Christ this fellow over here must be amazed if he stands over there and says I know right well he doesn't know the language but look he's doing it and when somebody else stands out and he speaks to some other fellow let me point this out to you and to a few other boys around that there was no interpreter here funny isn't it you never noticed it before you wouldn't know about it no interpreter sir this fellow stands up here he talks just the language that that was the gift appendix that was it I'm exposed to say that there's nobody in the world can do it tonight nobody at all so if you think there is I'm prepared to challenge them because I go to Queen and Irene she she's a big nod to Queen she nearly when she was coming in late tonight they were singing glory glory hallelujah must have been glad to see you yes I'll tell you this we can easily get 16 nationalities we can get Pakistanis we can get Indians we can get Chinese we can get Japanese we can get Thailanders I can govern you up to 16 anytime and it will be a great joy for me to bring them in here and put them in these front seats if you can get anybody around anywhere at anytime from any place who can come and talk to them in their own language and you know as well as where you're sitting there's nobody can do it what we here for supposed to be tongues is baloney you see it right with you you know they say I can do that at any time it doesn't take the Holy Ghost to do that you need to be a monk to do that this is tripe I tell you but it is upshot and unbelievable and we're going to cook it once and for all yes it's tripe what tripe I don't think we need to go on with that look let's get this there's 12 and they were all amazed and went and judged saying one to another what magnificent others mocking said these men are full of new wine and that's something about wine you would need to know but you can't get drunk on new wine they were only mocking they were saying they have been drinking new wine it's only mocking won't get drunk on new wine but Peter standing up with the eleven lifted up his voice ye men of Judea you see let's put it that they were talking to Jews oh that's a thing that really should get the hold of you see this gift that was given at Pentecost it's what is called a fine gift it's one of the fine gifts there's a whole lot of fine gifts but it was a fine to the Jews oh yes what's the proof therefore you know I'll tell you the standard blathering on Sunday morning from the place where not a Jew next nor near it not at all it's all wrong you see let's go back to 1st Corinthians chapter 14 1st Corinthians chapter 14 now I want to try to do this for you in a way that you always get it so we'll we'll just take it in bits let's read verse 23 1st Corinthians 14 23 if therefore Paul is talking to them if therefore the whole church become together into one place and you must know that he's talking about the whole local church he can't be talking about the whole church worldwide because he's talking about the whole church become together into one place you see they hadn't the chaotic state in those days that we have of so many denominations and all the believers were gathering together on the first day of feast now the place and the people are two different things you see this building is not the church I'm all about to call it the church actually it should be called the meeting house and in many places across the country you'll find this old word on the front, the meeting house this is the place where the church meets you can see this phrase look at it again if therefore the whole church become together into one place to differentiate between the gathering and the place where they were gathered and I think that's something we ought always to do now if therefore the whole church become together into one place and all speak with tongues that is everybody that comes in all speak with tongues and there come in those that are on end or unbelievers will they not say that you're mad I say that they're alright you see we've got to get the whole church let's get all the believers into the place sort of first of all and then there come in those that are on land or unbelievers and that's not just the same crowd you know God's not just using two words for the same thing you see the Jews were usually called unbelievers that's the answer you do he wouldn't believe certain things about Christ the pipes and the shadows and the parallels and the pictures that he knew so well he didn't believe that Christ is the end of the lawful righteousness he was an unbeliever but the Gentiles came into these meetings too and they were called the on land you can easily see this you can see the church sitting there can't you the whole church you can see the unbelieving Jew coming in to just see what's going on and you can see the on land Gentile coming and Paul is saying now the whole church should come together and these unbelieving Jews come in and sit round you and these on land Gentiles come in and you all start babbling at the same time will they not say you're mad well I've heard this very phrase from some on land Gentile people who have attended these kind of meetings the man in this meeting asked him if he could stand up and the first meeting he ever went to was one like this and he says I was sure they were mad and I'm sure they're mad too now I want you to hear that you've got the setting now let's go back a little bit he has got the whole church in and he's got the unbelieving Jew and the on land Gentile now look at verse 22 wherefore tongues or languages are for a sign are for a sign not to them that believe oh no no no no I hope you've got this not a mistake of anything not for believers at all this gift that was given to the early church was a sign gift not to them that believe are you reading but to them that believe not it was a sign for the Jews are you reading well take a time to have another look at it yeah you know I was way up in Derbyshire and I was a doctor there with a big meeting in his own house oh they tell me it was terrible he'd got about 60 there on a Sunday morning and if you couldn't play the bagpipes you brought the bagpipes and if you could play a melody you brought the melody and if you could play a flute you brought the flute and if you could play a trumpet you brought the trumpet and if you couldn't play any of those things you brought a bin lid and just make a noise a joyful noise and they tell me they marched round this room for hours and everybody doing their own thing as we say what a noise it was he saw I was given lectures in the little Methodist church up there came along and said to me you have written a book about tongues about the truth I'd like to talk to you I said I'd be willing to talk to you at any time he said would you make this tonight so she had all the kids in there down there and I said let's put a little table in the middle of this room now you put your Bible there and I'll put my Bible here and we'll look at a few phrases together he's certainly a clever doctor through the university and I began with this verse verse 22 wherefore tongues are for a sign it's a sign gift not for them that believe but for them that believe not I said you agree with this doctor I don't think honestly he'd ever seen his life before because he stared at me as if somebody hit him with a hammer I said doctor look we have an all night you just sit up and take notice I'm asking you a question do you believe this he said look I'd like to talk I said you're like to talk what you're answering the question no getting away from it do you believe that this gift that was in the early church it was a sign gift it was not for the evil it's a sign not for them that believe so after sort of nearly going across the table for him he sort of said yes yes yes yes it's all over I said how many have you down in this room on Sunday morning six people are they all saved yes he said they're all saved I said there's nobody else here then no I said how could the gift of tongues be working if it was a sign not for them that believe but for them that believe not you'd have to have unbelief or see otherwise the Holy Ghost is upsetting his own people now he thought just had enough trouble to think so the only thing he can do is lost his temper and he's a fool to lost his temper with me because I could manage any day ever lived I felt like lifting him and throwing him through the window so what's the use of losing your temper when the truth is being told for God's sake learn you need to bow to me you need to bow to this book and if this is a sign not for them that believe but for them that believe not then you'll need to bow to that friend if you go where there's only believers and they talk all wriggles all Sunday morning then I'm afraid it's not of God at all it can't be can it oh but it goes further than that you see because this will go back to verse 21 in the law it is written now when it says in the law it is written we're going back to the book of Moses called the law sometimes first five books of the bible it is written which name of other languages and other lips will I speak unto this people God had already said that in the law that he would speak to the Jews with name of other languages oh yes and then he gave the gifts and it was so convinced you see if a Jew from some foreign land was sitting here tonight I don't think you get the fear now but supposing it was and he could only talk Arabian then all of a sudden God would speak to him in Arabian the wonderful works of God he would need to know that this was of God this was a sign to convince these Judaizers who would never bow and it was something that was needed for the early church because here's a small number of people going out against not only the power the mighty power of imperial Rome but going against the mighty power of Judaism and it was this fine gift that destroyed Judaism because when men get up and speak to Jews in the long language they had to sit up and take notes this wasn't full nonsense you see there are little lads and there are little places where they think this is a wonderful way of putting in a night and they have a whole goal to it and then they blame everybody else for not being spirit for Robert Angus Woolby was a man who founded Scotland Yard and when he founded Scotland Yard you would know he was no fool he could speak 14 languages fluently and he was interested in this supposed to be gift of time and he went round every little meeting in London to try to find out if anybody ever speak in languages and he couldn't find anybody speaking in languages it is no language it is belonging, it is nonsense but he wandered into a little back street in the east end of London where there was a little church and across me got up and speak in fluent Chinese but the things he said about Christ and the blood of Christ and the cough of Christ and the oath he used against Christ couldn't be repeated anywhere but Sir Robert Anderson got the pencil out and in short time put it down and it's in a book today printed by Sir Robert Anderson was this the spirit of God you know right now what it was it was the devil now we come a bit closer home and there's a professor of languages at Queen's at this moment and it's only a few weeks back that he went into a little place in Belfast and there's a fellow talking in tongues and he's cursing and blaspheming the Lord and all the other boys are yelling hallelujah at the same time oh one day you would lose your blessed mind you see I was sitting at home one evening the knock came to the door and the man out of his town I should tell you his name maybe it wouldn't be fair to him now but never mind would like to come in to speak to you right bring him in says I had a dream about you that amuses me is that enough most of me meat and cheese except I'm persuaded that if you could only get the gift of tongues you'd be the greatest man in the world I'm nearly the greatest man in the world without them anyway I said you know my friend you have about three seconds to get out of that chair and through that door and through that gate cause I am not listening to you cause this is neither of God nor anything pertaining to God and I threw you out now now just get up and get up I'm sorry to have to say this you know I meet him almost every night now and I'll tell you I can meet him tonight coming out of a pub over there and he's always stupid drunk I actually stopped the car one night in front of Vernon and battered him against the wall wouldn't they second you and they would love you to sit and listen to the supposed to be spirituality the whole things of the devil you know I've been through this a time or two I had some sort of professor of this thing he came in to see me once I said how long ago since you first spoke in tongues he says 29 years ago I says then I couldn't have known you professor so how could I if I tell you what day it was and where it was and about the time will you surprise me I said you'll be honest with me will you I says on a Saturday afternoon says what I says upstairs in your own back room says what I says there was nobody with you where were the unbelievers this is for unbelievers I says I'll tell you what you were doing you were going to have a go at it for the first time and a little meet in the next morning and you were practising and I have caught dozens of them out on this how can I go in a back room with a coddle can't you let anything now you will notice before I finish that there were interpreters here in Corinthians and the church didn't you see on the day of Pentecost this was out in the open and these fellows are all standing around and these men who have got this gift I like to think at the time were speaking to these people in their own language the wonderful works of God that they interpreted you see when you have a church speaking to a thing as it was in sermons and there are unlearned Gentiles and somebody gets up to speak to this unbelieving Jew over there and speaks in his own language the church now the unlearned Gentile doesn't know what's going on so God had to give another gift so that he can stand up and tell the church and the unlearned Gentile what he is saying to him when you have a church you hear it it's not here now ay this is the challenge too long you can do it come on I'll get you a few men to talk to they're like me if I'm talking have a look at 1 Corinthians 13 he's talking about love here he says verse 4 charity suffereth long in this time and the word charity is the old word for love and he says in verse 7 beareth all things love beareth all things love love believeth all things love hopeth all things love endureth all things love never faileth but whether there be prophecies these prophets that we got in the early church they shall fail or fade out whether there be tongues they shall keep whether there be knowledge cause God gave certain gifts of knowledge to the early church before the bible came you see somebody said to me you're talking about whether there be tongues they shall cease he says they'll only cease when that which is perfect is come and I said what did you think of it he said that's Christ coming I said you don't think that Paul called Christ that I should have something to say to him Paul never called Christ that how dare anybody call him that no it's an inanimate object isn't it oh well there it is there when that which is perfect is there came a day when the food stock was put to this and God had given everything he was going to give and everything he had to say and every revelation was all tied up now we don't need the gift now and we don't need the prophet now and we don't need this super knowledge that God gives about you know when Moses worked those wonderful miracles in the land of Egypt you will find that they ceased after that they were never worked again you will find that the manna in the wilderness ceased oh it didn't go on you know and you will find that even Elijah and Elisha whose miracles are prophets but the other prophets that came behind them oh Isaiah and Jeremiah Uzziah, Daniel all the rest of them oh they didn't work any and in these days now by the faith and hope and love one of these days you know our faith is going to be turned into faith and our hopes will be absolutely satisfied but love will go on for a long time I hope you don't let them upset you anymore now we are determined to take things like this for a magnitude just to expand and explode and explain and I trust that God will bless you have a look at this lovely little hymn 1067 we'll just sing one verse 1067 God of mercy God of grace show the brightness of our faith, shine upon us saviour's time, fill our church with light divine and thy help extend unto us the motive aim 1067 oh oh oh Lord we thank thee for thy wonderful word we thank thee for all it's doctrines and it's truth and the light Lord help us to hide it in our hearts that we may not sin against thee we thank thee that thou hast magnified thy words above all I know and if thou hast placed it in so highly exalted positions help us to do the same oh Lord just part of in thy feet and with thy blessings and take us to our homes in safety and bless our friends as they leave tomorrow for London and the far east and on the way home and grant Lord that they'll stay with us may they remain sacred with them and grant that God will bless them abundantly in the days to come so give us all thy touch this evening for thy mercy Amen
