Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher begins by expressing gratitude for the attendees' hunger for God's word. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the truths of scripture with the help of the Holy Spirit. The preacher then reads from Ezekiel 8, describing a vision in which he sees the appearance of fire and a hand that takes him to Jerusalem. The sermon shifts to discussing the Antichrist and the events leading up to the tribulation, including the rise of a united European government and the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. The preacher concludes by stating that the ecumenical movement will not be successful and that the Roman leader will ultimately unite with the European government.
Sermon Transcription
Let's read this, it's nice to hear the rustling of the leaves, isn't it? Verse 1, we're at Ezekiel chapter 8, verse 1, And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, As I, Ezekiel, sat in mine house, and the elders had good as sat before me, That the hand of the Lord God fell there upon me. Blessed experience. When I beheld in lower likeness in the appearance of fire, From the appearance of his loins even downward fire, And from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness as the colour of amber. And he put forth the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of mine hair, And the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, And brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, Through the door of the inner gate that looked us toward the north. Where was the seat of the image of Delphi? There was an image in the temple. And behold, the glory of the Lord God of Israel was there, According to the vision that I saw on the plain. Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, And behold, northward at the gate of the altar, This image of Delphi in the entrance. He said, furthermore unto me, Son of man, seeest thou what they do? Even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, That I should go far off from my sanctuary, But turn yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations. He brought me to the door of the court, and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall. Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall. And when I had digged in the wall, behold the door. He said unto me, go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. So I went in and saw. Behold every form of creeping thing, an abominable beast, And all the idols of the house of Israel portrayed upon the wall round about. Verse 13. He said also unto me, turn ye yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord's house, which was toward the north. And behold there sat a woman weeping for Tammuz. Right there on the page. That was the son of Nimrod, who said, Madam, he blotched the people, That the child was from God. And behold Babylonians worshipped. And now I want you to get this. That this plaster cast of Tammuz is brought into the house of the Lord. A plaster cast in the God's house. And I'll tell you this. That the mother and child worship came from Babylon. And the chain and the teeth. And it's a weeping cleanse for my feet. It's a chain and a cross now. You never learned that in the New Testament. Nor did the Lord ever ask you to do it. It's a Babylonian thing. And I'll tell you this. Weeping plaster cast in the God's house. Is abomination to the Lord. And it's Babylonian. It takes all this a little bit further. Let's go back to 1 Samuel chapter 5. First book of Samuel. And at the fifth chapter. First book of Samuel chapter 5. This one. And the Philistines took the ark of God. And brought it from Ebenezer unto us gods. And the ark of God was called. It was a type of cross. And it's in Philistine hands just now. When the Philistines took the ark of God. They brought it into the house of David. And set it barred there. What David just means. The fish god. This is one of the gods that the Philistines had. Part of this image was fish. Part was man. Was the fish god. Says, And when they have asked God of those early on the morrow, Behold, David was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took David and set him in his place again. You see, they brought the ark of God in before Dagon. And when they have asked God of those early on the morrow, That was the second day, wasn't it? Oh, Dagon was down. So they put Dagon up again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, That was the third day. Behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. I want you to get this bit. And the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold. Only the stump of Dagon was left to him. And if you have a good Bible, a marginal reference is there. Only the fishy part of Dagon was left. It was the third day. It was great victory. But it's not that sort of quick thing that I'm after tonight. Very precious as it is. You know, these fish gods, all the priests that danced round these fish gods, They all wore cups or mitres and they were in the shape of a fish's mouth. Now, I went and bought a book written by a great Roman Catholic scholar. And I'll tell you his name. His name is Father O'Sullivan. And before I say another word, let me say this. That I believe that he's one of the greatest Roman Catholic scholars who have ever lived. At least there's one thing about him. There is no Roman bigotry about him. And he's a perfectly honest predator. Now, he writes a book. You can buy it in any Roman bookshop and such. You can buy it in Erskine Maze in Belfast. It's called The Externals of the Catholic Church. Say it over again. The Externals of the Catholic Church. He's dealing with all the vestments, all the externals of the Catholic Church. Now, when he comes to talk about the Pope's mitre, I'm not going to just talk about it. I'm going to read you what he says. I wrote it down so that I wouldn't misquote the gentleman. It is what he has in his book. The distinctive part of the Pope's office is the mitre. A double pointed cap. It is of Oriental origin and can be traced back to Pagan times. That's what Fr. O'Sullivan said. And he was perfectly honest. As I can tell you, the Pope's cap, it's a Babylonish one. You see it any time you like. It's as thick as moss. Double pointed. And I can tell you that the mother and child worship came from Babylon. And the kin came from Babylon. And I can tell you that the classical caste came from Babylon. And I can tell you that the caste came from Babylon. But you'll find that in the Roman system around us, there's a tremendous lot of Babylonian things. I believe that we've seen the system that the Antichrist is going to use. Let's go back to where we began. We're at Revelation chapter 17. Now we were looking to find out who this great whore is. And we were taking a few things from Babylon. Supposing I had not been able to do this. I want you to go back to verse 5. This whore, upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Bubble and the Grapes, the Mother of Harlots and the Abominations of the Earth. They took this, and I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints. And with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. Now I ask anybody in this place, this man, what party, what system, what nation, what power, down through the ages, has been drunk with the blood of the saints? Must be in us. So I know that communism has done away with a few of the saints. I know that paganism has murdered saints. I know that Judaism has stolen saints. I've got an encyclopedia beside me. And of course you will know right away that I have nothing to do with the writing of this. They wouldn't let me put my nose in that. All of this is written by the scholars. And there is no bigotry, no bitterness about it. It's just the British encyclopedia. It is one of the volumes. I've got about fifteen volumes, this is one. And I turned up the word Inquisition, just to have a look at it. And I'll read you what it says here, and I had nothing to do with it. Inquisition, in the Roman Catholic Church, a court or tribunal is established for the examination and punishment of heretics. The institution was founded in the twelfth century by Father Dominic, who was charged by Pope Innocent III with orders to incite Catholic princes and people to exploit heretics. Now, there's a historian of the time of the Inquisition, and this is what it says. According to the estimate of its historian, Lorente, he was called, the number of the victims of the Spanish Inquisition from 1481 to 1808 amounted to 341,000 in Spain alone. Of these, nearly 32,000 were burned at the stake. You've got to put France beside this. You've got to put Italy beside this. You've got to put Europe beside this. And the number comes to millions. Let me tell you that the people that were burned at the stake were the sons of the Lord. They were the martyrs of Jesus. Well, this is funny old worldly, you know. You see, Rome had power to set up what was called the Inquisition. Means they could walk into a town like this, kick open any hole, and set up a court. You could be brought before it, and you could be asked questions about your loyalty to the Pope. Or what did you think of the mosque? Or do you pray to Mary? What do you think of purgatory? Do you know what a Christian would answer to these if he were a Christian at all? I asked a Roman Catholic priest one morning, I said, do you pray to Mary? He said, I do. I said, does she hear you? He said, I wouldn't be sure if she did hear me. I said, is she God? He said, no, we never said she was God. We say she was the mother of God in a devotional way. I said, does all the Roman Catholics in this town pray to Mary? And in the next one, and the next one, and in Belfast, and Bellahadeen, and Bangor, and Bellywater, and all over the north of Ireland, all over the south of Ireland, all over Ireland, and England, and Scotland, and Wales, and Africa, and America, and all over the world, do they all cry at the one time you can hear them? They need to be God. I'll tell you what he said, he said, you would disturb me. Mom, I would disturb you. He said, you sit down for a moment, and I'll disturb you. I couldn't believe that nonsense. I would have to be burned. I had no notion of going back to that nonsense, you know. Not for a moment. And I don't believe that any man can create Christ. For a man to say, he can take a whip and cling it, my Lord, you can't get me to believe that, Lord. I don't do that. I shall have to be burned. I'll tell you this, men and women who love Christ, and who love the book, they're out to answer, we can't do it. They were burned. Let me tell you, there were millions of them burned. And Rome is trying to put on a new face. Oh, yes, we know all about it. I'll tell you this, God will require the blood of the martyr. Don't you think God's going to wink at that? You can't burn his face and laugh your way into glory. This damnable, pagan Babylonians. I'm talking about the system. But keep it clear that I'm not talking about Roman Catholic individuals. I love all the Roman Catholic individuals that's in the town. And I wish I could lead them out from under a damnable system to a Christ who would save them. They're trying to bring them to the baptist, you know. Oh, they could join all the Baptist churches in the country and die and go to hell. Unless they get Christ. Let's keep it clear. You know, when I preach the truth, I'm between the devil and the deep sea. Sometimes I rattle it into this system, and I always will, as long as I'm here. Sometimes I rattle the orange man. And I say, if you're depending on yourself, instead of the Savior, you'll go to hell with yourself. Well, you see where I'm stuck? I'm between the devil and the deep sea. I don't hardly know which one's the devil and which one's the deep sea. Never mind. Don't let us get at any worse. I think that this establishes, this establishes that the Antichrist is going to use this system. Now, I want you to get the hold of this, because this is most important, and I think it's forgotten in our land. It says in verse 9, we're at Revelation 17, verse 9, And here is the mind which hath wisdom. Seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth. There are seven kings, five are fallen. One is, and the other is yet to come. When he comes, he must continue, so it states. And the beast that was and is not, even he is the itch, and is of the sudden, and doth enter perdition. And we were through this last week. And the ten horns which thou sought are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet, but receive power as kings whene'er with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. He shall make war with the lamb. Mind you, the beast will tackle the lamb. The lamb shall overcome them. He is lord of lords, and king of kings. He is the text for Sunday morning. They that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. And he says unto me, The waters which thou sought where the whore sitteth are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And the ten horns which thou sought upon the beast, these shall hit the whore. These kings, these united kings of Europe, these shall hit the whore, and shall make her deathless, and naked. And shall eat no flesh, and burn her with fire. And God hath put into their hearts to fulfill his will, and to get their kingdom unto the beast. You see, friends, I can see this quite clearly, that the United States of Europe will come to pass, and this great European government will take place. And out of this government will arise this man of sin, this beast. And he's going to get the people united economically, and politically, and religiously. And he's going to use the Roman facts to do it. Mind you, whether we like it or not tonight, this Roman Church is going to take command of Europe. We might as well face it. And there'll be no keeping it back. And I'll tell you this, this ecumenical farce that has started will never be any use. How would the Roman leaders unite with Sophia? I would like you to come and tell me. Oh, Sophia, that old blasphemer, who said that our Lord Jesus flirted with Mary and Martha all the days of his life. And Weatherhead, who said that Zechariah shot Mary, the Virgin Mary, the Blessed Virgin Mary, shot the Blessed Virgin Mary up in the temple, and then in and out of her until he made her pregnant. And that's where Christ came from. I'll tell you this, the Roman Church wouldn't stand for that. The Roman Church wouldn't have anything to do with that, you know. They'll take Sophia and Weatherhead out and they would be right. I'll tell you this, we've got to play fair on this platform. The Roman Church won't stand for abortion by the only man that stood up in Parliament and only struck the table with the Romans. And I'll tell you, when it came to the matter of homosexuality, the Romans were on their feet. The Unionists, the pavely pitchforks, voted for abortion. One of our clever Unionists. Yes, let's be fair now, let's be fair. I'll tell you this that's going to surprise you, you know, that the Antichrist, the man of faith, the beast of revelation, he's going to use this Roman system, and he's going to let it take command. For a wee while, for a wee while. And then he, under ten kings, is going to destroy. Now, if he destroys the whole Roman system, how could he be the Pope? You'd like to come along and have a go, wouldn't you? Because I think some of his top blubbers about the Antichrist being the Pope. And the 39 articles, top blubbers too. Because I'll tell you this, that the beast is allowing the woman to ride for the wee while. And then he, under ten kings, will get together and destroy her. How will the Pope destroy the system? I think you've got to think it over again. Carlo, the Antichrist is determined to use this religious system until he gets everybody bowed to him. He'll blot out us and he'll make the world worship him. That's what he's after. He'll make the world come to his head. We've been looking at what the judgment is going to be. And God won't forget the blood of the martyrs, you know. God won't forget the blood of the saints. And this is God's will, see verse 17. For God has put in their hearts to fulfill his will and to agree and to give their kingdom unto the beast. And together the beast and the ten kings will destroy the system. Friend, you're in this meeting and you're not saved. It's time you did a bit of thinking. So as I can see this, I can see this fulfilling before my very eyes. I can see the stage being set. I can see the nations being divided. And I can see that in no time at all we'll have the United States of Europe and the Parliament and a man will arise and the Lord must come and take the church away first. You know, we have some old religionists among the Protestants, the Wolves and the Catholics. Oh, you couldn't talk to them. They have been brought up in a Protestant church. They have been sprinkled with the children. They have been confirmed when they were young men. And they're still in their sins and on their way to hell. There's never no talk about Christ. Friend, pray a Protestant or Catholic. There are some Roman Catholics in this meeting and they give you credit for someone big enough to come. And I hope it's been made plain that I'm neither this nor that. I'm just trying to get the truth out for you. Let me start in one word. What you need is Christ. You need Christ. You can get down on your knees and call and be afraid that you'll be saved. And some of you dead, prostitutes, old men who have no Christ at all. May God speak to you. May God arouse the faith. You know, we want to say a moment about next week. I'll take a breath for a second. You know, we have been looking at the judgment seat and the Antichrist and what he would do and what he will do. What will the Lord Jesus do when all this is going on? Give us interviews. See the common market and the tribulation about to begin. What will the Lord Jesus be doing? But we are going to look up the magnificence of the master of the Lord and man in heaven. God bless you. Well, what's the number, Nora? Five hundred and thirty-nine it is. Five hundred and thirty-nine. The Lord's our rock, in him we hide. A shelter in the time of storm. Secure whatever ail the tide. A shelter in the time of storm. Five hundred and thirty-nine, please. Loving Father, at the close of our service, we bow in thanksgiving to thee for putting such a hunger and thirst in the hearts of so many people to come here to hear thy word. We thank thee for the way that was helped thy servant tonight. And we thank thee for what we have gleaned because of our coming here tonight. And we pray that as we leave here, that thou will help us in our meditation, help us in our reading, that we may have the help of the Spirit to understand some of these great truths of scripture. And we have been singing and reminding ourselves of our weary land. Help us all to remember that this is a wilderness scene. We're moving through this wilderness scene. Blessed be his name to the land that is fairer than day. And tonight we rejoice. Tonight our hearts go out to thee in thanksgiving for one who loved us when we were in our sin. One who came from the glories and died for us. We so unworthy sinful creatures. And we bless thee for one who rose triumphant from among the dead and lives in the power of an endless life and intercedes for us continually. And we bless thee for one who one of these days, maybe tonight, the Lord shall descend from heaven with the church. The voice of the archangels and the trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Help us, we pray, not to be downcast when we look around us or when we look inward. Help us to look upward and praise his great and wonderful name. Bless, we pray, all that has been for thy glory tonight in this place. Bless thy word. Bless the saints. And save the poor sinners, we pray. In the Savior's dear name, receive our thanks. Amen.
