The Eternal Spirit the Gifts That Came
Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Transcription
Coming to our subject this evening, and before we get along to the notes before you tonight, you remember we had to cut it short last week about some of the mistaken conclusions about healing and sickness. You see, I had a man in with me, oh, just a couple of days ago, Friday of last week, and he was a homosexualist. He admitted this freely. He said, you know, the way you ramp and rage about this is terrible. I said, I didn't think that I ramped and raged about it at all, I just read what God said about it. You like to say he's ramping and raging? Let's have a look at some of the things that God says about it in his book, and then we'll see what God says. Didn't all tell in the paper the other morning, he says, I will neither bow to Paisley nor the Pope. Wonder would he bow to God's word? I'm sure neither Paisley nor the Pope wants him to bow at all. So this old crack is great, so it is. Let's see what God's word says for a minute, and I'm just reading God's word, you can pick it up the fence for yourself, can't you? We're right on the spot, we're at Genesis 19. And there came two angels to Sodom at even. Now mark the phrases and it'll save the preaching. They are two angels, two shining angels from heaven. Of course they appeared as men, all right, and Lot sat at the gate of Sodom, and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. He had a good idea who they were. And he said, behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay, but we will abide in the street all night. And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house, and he made them a feast, and he'd bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. But, and this is one of the bots of scripture, but before they lay down, the men of the city, and I want you to get the phrase, just the men of the city, the men of Sodom, even the men of Sodom, God is so afraid you would miss it, he said, even the men of Sodom, come past the house round, I want you to get this bit, both old and young, because I'm afraid that a lot of these critics that come talking don't know about these phrases. All the young men, all of them, and all the old men, must have been quite a crowd of them. Sodom was a city. Before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, come past the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, rich and poor, and high and low, every quarter, how God puts the facts in, doesn't take any preaching. And they called unto Lot and said unto him, where are the men which came into thee this night, because they thought they were men. They thought they were two new men come into the city. Mighty story. Bring them out unto us that we may know them. And you might miss the truth here by the word know. They didn't want to know their names or anything like that. It means that they wanted to know them sexually. I'll have to talk out loud so that you'll get it. And the old fellow looked at me and said, how did you know that? You may be misinterpreting this. All right, we'll read on. And Lot, verse 6, and Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, and said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. I wonder how you get that bit in now. Because Lot seemed to know quite well what they were after. And I'll tell you once more, he said, behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man. And that's the same word. Yes, these girls had not known man. Because I think in this city, they didn't look for women, they looked for men. Let me, I pray thee, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes, only unto these men do nothing. This man would have given his two virgin daughters. They didn't want women. They wanted men. And the word wickedly is there. Now, let me push it a little bit further. Let me go way over to Jude. And remember, I'm only reading the scriptures. I'm not trying to preach. If I were to preach this, I don't know what time we would be out this evening. And Jude comes before the book of Revelation. And Jude is writing this wonderful chapter. It's called the Epistle of Jude. And at verse five, he said, I will therefore put you in remembrance, though you once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believe not. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved an everlasting chains on the darkness unto the judgment of the great day. He dealt with the unbelievers in Israel, and he dealt with these fallen angels. Verse seven, even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication. The old fellow's eyes nearly fell out. I said, sit still. You haven't heard the half of it yet. I detest these old blighters who come to argue, and they don't know. I didn't put the word fornication in. That's what they were judged for, for this wickedness. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities round about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh. You get the word. Oh yes, I sort of sickened him, but he had a bit to go. There's some of these old homosexuals here now, are you? I'll tell you, God doesn't think you're sick. God thinks you're a wicked, sinful, iniquitous creature. That's what he thinks about you. God do you think you're going to creep out of that by coming round and saying it's just sickness, is it? Well watch what happened now. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Sometimes they come and ask me about the fire in hell, is it literal? What do you think hit the plane? Literal fire. Sodom was burned and they walked in the ashes. There was ashes left. Abraham stood and saw the smoke ascending from the ashes. It was eternal fire, and it was literal. And you old wicked old man, you'll be in hell if somebody doesn't waken you. God will put you there too. There's no fun about this that I know. Are you listening to the book now? I'm not preaching at all, it's going on its own now, isn't it? Yes, this is fornication, this is wickedness. Let's go back to Romans chapter 1 just for a moment. Romans chapter 1, verse 20, just to get the proper connection. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. You see the whole mighty gigantic solar system around us and all the wonders of creation, just tell us quite plainly that there is a God. And you look out on this vast creation of ours, and we can't see the quarter of it. And you see it working in precision movement, better than any watch that was ever made. You know right well there was a maker. Even his eternal power and Godhead are clearly seen by the things which are created. You know the way people come to argue with me about the heathens, they come to argue with me about the heathens, you would think that man began in a jungle. Oh not at all, man began with God. There's no jungle about it. He was in fellowship with God, and knew God, and talked with God, and walked with God. Oh but he did a lot of things and got away from God. Oh don't think that man began in a jungle. Man put himself in a jungle. Watch verse 21, because that when they knew God, that takes you back to the beginning, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations. And their foolish heart was darkened, professing themselves to be wise. They became fools, and those are the boys you find on the tv talking about who is Jesus. And they profess to be everything that that Oxford and Cambridge can make them, and what daft language we have to listen to. I feel like breaking it, only it belongs to Mrs. Moan. Verse 23, And changed the glory, these people who got away from God, changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and took birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things, fancy turning your back on God and worshipping birds and four-footed beasts and so on. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. You see a man's a long way away from God when he does things like what we're thinking about. Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the creator, who is blessed forever, amen. For this cause God gave them up onto vile affections, oh get the adjective and get the word there, vile affections. For even their woman did change the natural use into that which is against nature. Oh woman play at this too you know. Oh yes, woman run after a woman too. You wouldn't know what to say when you're on a platform like this. You're all big enough and you know enough. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another. Men with men working that which is unseemly and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meat. Who told you it was sickness? It's getting away from God. It's wickedness that God has no notion of putting up with. And I'll tell you that this place is riddled with it just now. And that weak twerp Mason, he would push on to get a law passed. There are so many dams across this country of ours that's chock-a-block with high and low and rich and poor working at this in the middle of the night. And he's got to support it now. And let me tell you, he'll get off with it. Because I'll tell you this book keeps me right. I don't enter into these battles. Because this book says, as it was in the days of Lot, so shall it be in the coming of the Son of Man. You know we're on the verge of the Lord's coming and all these things tell us this. See these dens of ice? They just tell me that the Lord's about to step through the clouds. Oh, yes, you see this here, verse 28, even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind to do those things which are not convenient. What a wonderful book we have. See these old fellows who come to argue, they don't think these things are in the book. Once I hit them once or twice on the head with the word of God, you could see the size of them. You know, friend, if you go back to the Levitical law, it would settle it for you immediately. Let's go back to Leviticus 18. Sometime at your leisure, you should read this chapter. Because it's a terrible one. Let me take a verse here and there just to get rid of it. Verse 20, we're at Leviticus 18. Moreover, thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor's wife, to defile thyself with her. See verse 22, you should mark it in red ink. Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is abomination. You can say whatever you like, I'll tell you what God says, it's abomination. I'll tell you it's wickedness. I'll tell you it's fornication. I'll tell you it's a man far away from God. And I'll tell you this, God is honor bound to judge it. Shall not the judge of all the earth do right? Coming back to the text. I only read a few verses to you and that should settle it. I can go on, you know, I have a few more behind my hand. I don't want to take any more time with that stinking thing. And if you're here, my God crush you in bed tonight until you get on your knees. You're a wicked, abominable, sinful creature and God will judge you. Yes, you know, there's some other mistakes have been made about sickness. These fellows call this sickness when it's sin. But here's one that's not as easy dealt with as all that. Let's go over to Mark 16, Mark's gospel. And we're at chapter 16. Now, I know there are some pastors here this evening and some Bible teachers and some good preachers. And the most of these folks know that there's an argument about the last verses of Mark's gospel from verse 9 to verse 20. Some of the old scholars said that Mark's gospel ended at the end of verse 8. And from 9 to 20, not found in the earlier manuscripts. Certainly, it's not found in the Sinatic manuscript and it's a very old one. And these verses from 9 to 20 are not there. And it's not found in the Vatican manuscripts. Not there. And they went back a long way. It's found in the Vulgate. That's a very good manuscript, all right. And in Assyriac, which is perhaps the oldest one, these verses are found there. And just because of some of the things that's in these verses, some of the scholars take the easy way out and say, well, from 9 to 20 wasn't the original scriptures, and therefore we've got to bypass them. And I don't believe that. I don't believe that Mark ended his gospel with these words, for they were afraid at verse 8. I'm sure it didn't end like that. So I'm prepared to take this right through. And I believe it's easy enough. You see, the verses that trouble some believers are these ones, 17 and 18. They're verse 17. And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents. And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Now, what some believers stress is this. These signs shall follow them that believe. And of course, they thump the table and they say, them that believe are all believers. Now, I'm just going to put this to the test in this meeting. You see, if these signs are to follow every believer. In my name, they shall cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents. And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Then the most of us here must not be right with God. As these things have never happened to us. Maybe one or two of you daft enough to think that this happened to you. But we'll cure you before the meeting's over. You see these signs, let's get the word signs under, put a red letter under it. These signs shall follow them that believe. And there are five signs. In my name, they shall cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents. If they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Now, let's go over from there to 1 Corinthians chapter 12. And I'll come back now because I've got to deal honestly with this thing. And this chapter is dealing with spiritual gifts. And signs, in one word. And he's talking about the body of Christ, the church, of course. And the way down to the end of the chapter, he said this, verse 27. Now, ye are the body of Christ. And members in particular. And God has set some, let's get the word some. Some in the church, first, apostles. The apostles were great gifts to the church, of course. Secondarily, prophets. Now, the prophets were great gifts. They were second. Thirdly, teachers. I want you to get that because some of you would like to put tongues in there. I'm afraid you're not allowed. Because thirdly, it is teachers. After that, miracles. Then gifts of healing. Helps, governments, diversities of tongues. And they happen to be last. Now, he begins to test the believers. He said this. Are all apostles? You know the answer to that? Are all the members of the church of Jesus Christ apostles? You would be daft if you answered yes, wouldn't you? And the plain, simple answer is no. They're not all apostles. And then he asks another question. Are all prophets? And the answer is no. Are all teachers? Many would like to take this over and these things I'm dealing with tonight. Are all teachers? The answer is no. Quite plain and simple. You see, he gave some apostles and he gave some teachers. Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? And the answer is no. Because it's no the whole way through. Now, if Paul is saying only some. And Mark is saying all. Then we have a contradiction on our hands. But there are no contradictions in this book. Mark was not saying all believers. He was just saying, it seems, Paul, let's go back again to Mark 16. Because, you know, I think you need to be very careful when you're going to take something as big as this. Now, where these scholars say this chapter ends is at the end of verse 8. And I believe this great portion belongs to the Word of God beginning at verse 9. Now, I want you to watch it very carefully. Now, when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week. Yet the word early and on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene. And there can be no more arguments about that. He appeared first. She was the first one who met him when he rose from the dead. Out of whom he had cast seven devils so that there can be no mix up in Mary Magdalene. And she went and told them that had been with him. And she's talking about the apostles. As they mourned and wept. And you can see they had no notion that he would rise from the dead. They crawled into some upper room and they were mourning and weeping. And they thought the whole thing was over. And day when they had heard that he was alive and had been seen of her. I want you to get this word. Believe not. There's 11 apostles here. And here they are, they're mourning and weeping. And she comes in and she says, look, he's alive. I met him early this morning, he's really alive. They wouldn't believe. They're apostles, mind you. They're really saved, you know. They know the Lord, but they don't believe in this. I want you to get that word into your mind. Verse 12 now. After that, he appeared in another form onto two of them as they walked and went into the country. That's the two on the road to Emmaus. And they went and told it onto the residue. And that's the 11 again. Neither believed they them. They wouldn't believe them at all. These two came in and they wouldn't believe at all. These apostles, you know, were stuffed with unbelief at that particular moment. And get this word in now. Verse 14. Afterward, he appeared unto the 11. You got that now? Because Judas is out. You know who we're talking about now, don't you? You have no bother about it now. It's the 11 apostles. Them that were with him. The residue, if you like. He appeared unto the 11 as they sat at meat and upbraided them with their own belief. That's the word again. They had to take these boys to task. Says these boys are going to believe nothing. It wouldn't be no use to me if you're going to roam about in unbelief. You'll not believe even the truth when you hear it. You got that? He's talking to 11 now. Don't be getting a whole crowd in here. Just get 11 in, in case you make a blunder. I want you to get this now. And upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. After he's talked to them and put them sort of right, he said unto them, the 11, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them. Now let me say it like this so you'll get it. Them among you 11 that believe. And don't you dare to say that every believer should have them. I'm afraid you're teaching this book wrong. These signs that are here are the signs of an apostle, an apostle who believes. But an apostle who does not believe can put his hand on nobody or do nothing. Oh, what baloney is taught sometimes. We're talking about 11 and we're talking about unbelieving, believing 11. And it's again and again and again. And then he just says, if you really believe, you fellas, you know, you're my gifts to the church. No matter what gift you have. You see, we will look at the gifts in a moment or two. No matter what gifts you have. If you have faith, oh, you may have the gift of an evangelist and God may move your tongue and you may have the emotion and you may have the punch and you may have the zeal. I'll tell you, if your faith is not in the Holy Ghost to regenerate men, you'll be no use. You'll only do a lot of talking. Need faith, doesn't make a matter what gift you have. I may have the gift of teacher and just have to handle this book. And I'm not a brainy fella at all. But I believe, you see, all the time that the Holy Ghost will open your eyes. You know what I'm up against at times? People who have taught this for donkey's years and they can almost read things onto the page that are not there. My dear friend, these are the signs of an apostle. Look, let's go over to 2 Corinthians just for a moment. 2 Corinthians and we're at chapter 12. You know, this is the place where Paul has been doing wonderful things, going to heaven and all the rest of it. What a wonderful story, you see. He's been telling them about his taken up to paradise he was. He says in verse 11, 2 Corinthians 12, verse 11, I am become a fool in glorying, ye have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended of you. For in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds. Weren't these the signs of an apostle? You'll find that Paul, an apostle, who believed, all these signs were wrought. So I think you can see this, can't you? That people make mistakes about this. I had an old fellow looking at a big meeting once, is there something wrong with every one of you? You should all be up healing people and you should all be talking in tongues. What blathers we get, don't we? Some mothers do have them, right or not? Well now, let's settle it at that. It's start on tonight, you're not in a hurry, sure? Wonderful how that clock goes round. Someday I'll come in and break it when there's nobody here. All right, let's look at the gift that came now. We'll try and do it as quickly as we can. And we're at Ephesians, and we're at the fourth chapter, please. Paul's letter to the Ephesians, and we're at chapter four. Verse seven, He might fill all things. And he gave some, let's get the some in as well, put here. Some apostles, only some were apostles. And some prophets. Now that's very interesting because when our Lord Jesus Christ was forming the church, you see the foundations of the church, of course he himself was the chief cornerstone, but the foundations of the church were the apostles and prophets. If you just go back from chapter four to chapter two, see chapter two. Verse 19, Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. That's the foundation of the church. You know, when he was just starting out at Pentecost, I will build my church. Well, this is the foundation, the apostles and prophets. And you know, there was no New Testament in those days. No organ, no hymn book. I just met in some upper room or somewhere like that. Well, they needed the apostles to talk to. And they needed the New Testament prophets because they could bring the church New Testament truth when it hadn't got a New Testament. But you see, as the church began to grow, you know, when you lay a foundation down, there are great foundations of this wall. I was here when they were putting it. And I assure you, the foundation of that wall, about 16 feet down in there. It was an old barn place. And I remember them putting it down about 16 feet down. Now, you don't take the foundations up onto the roof. They're laid. And the apostles and prophets are gone. Those were gifts that came, but they're gone. They're in the foundation. Don't carry the foundation onto the slates. Now, he gave more gifts than that. Do you see this? Verse 11, and he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastors and teachers. You see, here are five gifts mentioned here, some apostles and some prophets. And we believe they're in the foundation. But the lasting ones we have are evangelists and pastors and teachers. That is true, you know, that some men have been chosen vessels of God. And God gave them all these gifts. They're evangelists and they're pastors and they're teachers. I would venture to say this. And when you venture to do these sorts of things, you can get into trouble. But I would venture that Willie Hagan, who was one of the great godly brethren preachers, was probably one of the greatest evangelists in the land. And I know that when he stood up at the table on Sunday morning in the brethren meeting to minister, that he was a great pastor. He thought and knew the need of the people, and he always got the message from the Lord. But I also know this. There was no man could handle the book better in teaching than Willie Hagan. Nobody. And can I say this? The brethren crucified him. Yeah. I was there at a great big meeting where there were thousands of believers. And, you know, just because he could minister in that wonderful, eloquent, sensible, clear, unmistakable way of his, where everybody that had any sense was blessed. Some of them didn't like it. Because, you know, if God blesses you, you always get people who are jealous of you. And as he got up and put his Bible down, I remember old Captain Hill looking at him and saying, Mr. Hagan, we would rather some of the young men would minister today, because they know the need of the meeting. Mr. Hagan said, I thought you would have learned by this time, Captain, that God knows the need of the meeting. Shut them up. They should have had them on their head or something. Oh, doesn't the devil have people everywhere? Old brethren men trying to keep back the ministry of the word. They sicken me so they do. Yes, there are some. Davy Craig of Scotch Craig, surely, was one of the great evangelists of the brethren. And a good old pastor and a good old teacher too. And there's a few around, you know. There are a few. Let's remember that when the apostles and the prophets are gone, that the teacher comes next. The great need of this land of ours, and all lands, is somebody to take the book and open it and preach it. It's the teacher that's in the need now. I can go to America and you get a cloud any day. And I have scores of letters to go back anytime I like. I've just got to be guided by God, not by American dollars. I'll tell you here are gifts. Now, let's go over to 1 Corinthians chapter 12. That's where we were there a moment ago. Now, here are all the rest of the gifts that were there in the early church. Verse 7, 1 Corinthians 12, 7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. See, in the early church, God put wise men there. And there were men who had knowledge of all things. To another, faith by the same Spirit. It's not the faith you believe with. That's the gift of faith. To another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit. To another, the working of miracles. To another, prophecy. To another, discerning of spirits. To another, diverse kinds of tongues. To another, the interpretation of tongues. These were all gifts that were given. Now, let me tell you that the apostles have gone. Let me tell you that the prophets have gone. Let me tell you that a whole lot of the other gifts have gone too. Yes, I think we need to see this. But let's see Peter working these gifts. Take the discerning of spirits. Go to the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 5. I want you to imagine the scene. Acts of the Apostles, chapter 5. I think we better go to chapter 4 just to get this correct. Young believers need to be taught. This is talking about all the believers in the early church. Neither was there any among them that lacked. For as many as were possessors of lands or houses, sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them down at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. I don't want you to get the idea of houses and lands. I think that the meaning comes out clear just in the moment. And Joseph, see verse 36, who by the apostles was named Barnabas, which is being interpreted the son of Constellation, a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus. Having lands, sold it, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet. You see, he had a bit of a farm over in Cyprus, but he wasn't there now. He was in Jerusalem. Well, he said, there was always the use of keeping that over there, and now I can sell that, I can do rightly without that, and I'll give to the poor of the church. Doesn't mean you sold your house, or you sold your farm, you know. But if you have a whole lot of things that you could do without, maybe you could help some poor saint. And that goes for us today too. I don't see why any of our sisters, or brothers in this meeting should go starving, while this meeting has got thousands in the bank. And I intend to see that they will not do so. And all the deacons and elders are behind me. And I do my best. You know, the greatest problem I have with this thing, is that some of our dear sisters and brothers, they hide it so much that you can't get in on them. You've got to learn it from another source somewhere, that they're in need. Then you've got to go and fiddle with them. I went to a lady the other day, my God, I'll get into trouble if I don't watch. And I said, look at you, I know you're in need. Did you know nothing about it? I said, I happen to know. And I said, that's what the Lord sent, and says, take them. I said, no, I'm telling you this dear, if the Lord Jesus sends you money to pay your electric bill, you better just take that. And no more nonsense, let's bow our heads and thank God for it. Very hard to deal with this. And let's remember, we ought to do it, and we ought to see that it's done. And thank God for the men we have here. There are men come to me at times, give me money, say, you go around and find these creatures. If I think, you know, there's a whole lot of things we can do without. See these men, they sold us, this man sold us land in Cyprus, having land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the Apostle's feet. Verse one chapter shouldn't be there at all. But, but a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession, they had a wee place they could sell to, and kept back part of the price. Sold it for so much, then hid a bit of it. Supposing we say they sold it for 4,000 just to keep us right. Put 2,000 under the tick. You know what the tick is? I accuse people, you know. You see, I was brought up where you lay on chaff for a while. You don't know anything about living, that's your pity. Never mind, under the mattress, what will that do for modernism? Yes, so they hid a bit of it. Kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, just a part of it, and laid it at the Apostle's feet. Nothing wrong with bringing a part of it. But if you're going to pretend that it's all, that's a different kettle of fish, you know. I won't do. That's hypocrisy, that's pretension. Kept back part of it, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it down at the Apostle's feet. But, but Peter said, Ananias, why hast Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? You see this, this gift he had? This was the gift that was given to him. It was discernment. His two foot walk in, they leave this money down, and they say, we sold the possession, there it is. He says, why, why, why, why has Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? He just knew on the spot. I wouldn't know. You came and said to me, that's the, I sold the car, that's theirs, I'm wondering, sure, what would I know? I don't have this gift. I just have to take it to just what you say. I couldn't do that. You don't have this gift. But he had. Let me tell you, this gift is not around today. It's gone! None of these clowns take this one to act on it. What's the big of it? They don't know their own mind never made anybody else's. No, it won't do, you see. Look at chapter 8. Go over to chapter 8. You see, Philip went down to Samaria. And preached Christ unto them. It was wonderful. Lots of people were saved. See verse 5. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them. He knew his job. And verse 12 says, but when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized. Because they were believers. When they believed, they were baptized. Both man and woman. Then Simon, you see, I bypassed that. Look at verse 9. But there was a certain man called Simon, which before time in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one. He was an old black magic man down there. Then Simon himself believed also. And when he was baptized, he continued with Philip and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now, when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John, who, when they were calmed down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. And remember, these people were Samaritans. And we went into that one evening. Now, I want you to get the hold of this. Verse 18. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, give me also this power. That's all he wanted. That on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, this is this gift coming again. Thy money perish with thee. Because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter. Wasn't that a big thing for Peter to say? I'm money perish with thee. Because thou hast thought the gift of God may be purchased with money. Sometimes the Romans tell me he was the first pope. Hey, a funny pope this boy. Fancy the pope saying, thy money perish with thee. Because thou hast thought that the gift. I need to get this boy converted from the world. Won't work, will it? What a wonderful look it is. You can take it from all angles, you know. Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee. Because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter. For thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness. Pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness. Oh, he had professed to believe and know about that. Yes, and he had been baptized by a merchant too. Know about that bit too. Because you can profess to believe and get baptized by a merchant. And your heart not right with God, you know. I've known a whole lot of them. It's this gift. Now I think that what we'll do now is what you're praying for. That I'll stop. And what you'll have to do, because I've given our secretary, and she's working at this just now, poor dear. I've given her the notes for next week. And she's getting them all done out just now. Now you'll need to keep that bit you have. And we'll take next week at finishing this, and that'll put our new session back a bit. And what you see in the paper this week won't count, but the Lurgan folk won't know a thing about it. So we'll stop now, and there's a good bit to come, because I think I would miss the truth. Let's bow together before the Lord. Not sing any more tonight, just let's take them over it. Lord, for thy holy, divine, inspired word, we give thee thanks. We pray that we may cherish this book. And that we may learn, Lord, to study, to show ourselves approved unto God. Work, men, that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Bless everyone who has looked into the book tonight. Grant, Lord, that we'll learn to love this book with all our hearts and all our souls. We believe that this book will keep us from sin. And we believe that sin will keep us from this book. Part us in thy fear, and with thy blessing, for thy name's sake. Amen.
