Wayne Grudem

Wayne A. Grudem (February 11, 1948 – ) is an American preacher, theologian, and author whose extensive work in systematic theology and biblical studies has made him a prominent figure in evangelical Christianity. Born in Jim Falls, Wisconsin, Grudem grew up attending First Baptist Church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in a family shaped by modest means and strong faith. He earned a B.A. in economics from Harvard University (1970), an M.Div. (1973) and honorary D.D. from Westminster Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in New Testament studies from the University of Cambridge (1979), equipping him with a robust academic foundation for his ministry. Grudem’s preaching career began in earnest during his 20-year tenure (1981–2001) at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, where he served as chairman of the Department of Biblical and Systematic Theology, teaching and mentoring future pastors. In 2001, he became Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies at Phoenix Seminary in Arizona, a role he held until retiring from public teaching in May 2024 due to advancing Parkinson’s disease, diagnosed in 2015. His sermons, often delivered at Scottsdale Bible Church and other venues, emphasized expository preaching, reflecting his belief that all Christians can understand Scripture through careful study—a conviction rooted in his conversion at a Baptist youth camp.
