Sermon Transcription
God lives and works today, but maybe you don't feel that way. Does it seem like nothing is going right? Do your problems keep growing without any solution? Today's meditation is the testimony of someone who found herself in this situation and then experienced God as a father of faithfulness. Have you ever sat in a hole of depression filled with worries, cares, and insurmountable problems? At a time in my life when I was in this condition, I received a card from Mother Basilea. On this card was a picture of a child. The child was enclosed within two large hands. The inscription below read, God holds every person, even the smallest child in his hands, as though he cared for him alone. On the back of it, Mother Basilea had written, This is how God loves you as his child. Believe in his love. He cares for you. However, this card and these words didn't help me. As I shared these feelings, she gave me the following advice. I have found a key from my own experience, which will open the way to the comfort and aid of God when you are depressed. It is giving thanks. Begin to give thanks in the midst of your problems and difficulties, and sing such songs as, Father, I thank you in midst of my pain, for you turn suffering and grief into pain. It is in love that you discipline me. Goodness and blessing the ending will be. Bring yourself to your Heavenly Father in prayer, committing yourself in full trust to him and his ways of dealing with you, thanking him for all of his ways. Indeed, this was the key. The more I called out who the Father is, how good his ways were, how steadfast his love and kindness is to me, not only in my heart, but also aloud and in song, the more trust and peace streamed into my heart. We wanted to share this with all of you who are listening today, with the hope that it will give you the courage to try it out. Yes, what we say about God determines what we will receive from him. If we praise him as the Father, he will prove himself to be our Father. If we praise his faithfulness, we will experience it. If we complain, however, that God is not a Father and not a helper, we will also not experience his help. He takes us at our word. He will act according to the way we speak about him. Towards a child, he is a Father. So begin to praise God as the kindest Father, full of faithfulness and love, as I did, and you will experience that he will reveal himself to you in just this way.
