 Hymn Books

Does anybody out there know a good hymn book that contains many of the classical christian hymns, especially of the Weslyean-Holiness tradition? I don't need books that contain the music that goes with them, I just want the verses.

I don't know about the American AoG but the UK version used a Redemption Hymnal for many years. It had a whole section of 'holiness' hymns. It was an interesting historical clue to the route of much of the early pentecostal movement. Redemption Hymnal is currently out of print.

Brother Lars I am not sure in the orginal hymn book it doesn't have authors usually listed? Maybe Ron can shed some light on that occourance? Many obviously are from people such as the Wesleys, Watts, Bonars, etc.

 Re: Hymn Books

Great, I just got a copy for $17 on alibris.com. Granted, the condition of the book is bad, but as Greg says, that means somebody probably tried to shred it under conviction during a sermon, and probably wept on it and all.

 Re:

That's funny. Tozer had a great comment about the Methodist hymnbook and said something to the effect that next to the Bible it was his favorite book.

Great work Greg. Wow, it's pretty awesome how much stuff is here. I love the Wesley hymns and found over 1,000 of them online here if you're interested: http://www.ccel.org/w/wesley/hymn/jw.html#h1.

Thats what I am copying over to SI :-P and yes just to read the hymns and meditate on the words are a hidden blessing. Leonard Ravenhill used to memorize many of the great hymn stanza's.

 Re:

Of course, they weren't just told what to sing, but how to sing...
"sing, said Wesley, lustily and with good courage"

if you would like an example of how it probably sounded try this;Christ the Lord is risen today No 14 and then click on the loudspeaker button for that hymn. Surprised?

If you want Wesley's full instructions for hymn singing you will find them here; Wesley's Instructions
