Natural ability or talent, when not directed toward God's purposes, is ultimately ineffective and powerless in the Christian life. True usefulness comes from surrendering skills to serve God's will and relying on His strength rather than human ability alone (2 Corinthians 3:5). Illustrations often contrast unused gifts with the potential fruitfulness when employed faithfully.
Having ability is useless without applying it to meaningful or greater tasks.
Plutarch says that a traveler at Sparta, standing long upon one leg, said to a Lacedæmonian, “I do not believe you can do as much.” “True,” said he, “but a goose can.”
There are many who have abilities to do greater things who are content to boast of some accomplishment as useless as standing on one leg.
