or ABINADAB, a Levite, and an inhabitant of Kirjath- jearim, with whom the ark was deposited after it was brought back from the land of the Philistines, 1 Samuel 7. This Amminadab dwelt in Gibeath, that is to say, in the highest part of the city of Kiriath-jearim.

2. The chariots of Amminadab are mentioned, Son 6:12, as being extremely light. He is thought to have been some celebrated charioteer, whose horses were singularly swift.

American Tract Society Bible Dictionary by American Tract Society (1859)

1. A son of Aram, of the tribe of Judah, and father of Naashon. He was one of the ancestors of Christ; and his daughter Elisheba was the wife of Aaron, Exo 6:23 Rth 4:20 Mat 1:4 . "The Chariots of Amminadib," Son 6:12, were very light and swift, in allusion perhaps to some noted charioteer of that day.\par 2. A son of Kohath, 1Ch 6:33 .\par

Smith's Bible Dictionary by William Smith (1863)

Ammin’adab. (one of the prince’s people).

1. Son of Ram or Aram, and father of Nahshon, or Naasson (as it is written). Mat 1:4; Luk 3:32; Num 1:7; Num 2:3; Rth 4:19-20; 1Ch 2:10. One of the ancestors of Jesus Christ.

2. The chief of the 112 sons of Uzziel, a Junior Levitical house of the family of the Kohathites. Exo 6:23; 1Ch 15:10-11

3. In 1Ch 6:22, Izhar, the son of Kohath, is called Amminadib; probably a clerical error.

Fausset's Bible Dictionary by Andrew Robert Fausset (1878)

("of the people of the prince"; else, "my people is willing".)

1. Son 6:12; "My soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib," one noted for swift driving; compare Son 1:9. Rather: "My soul made me like the chariots of my willing people" (Psa 110:3), or else, "of the Prince of My people," Messiah. His chariots are His glorious angel escort.

2. Num 1:7; Num 2:3. Ancestor of David and Jesus (Mat 1:4; Luk 3:3; Num 1:7; Num 2:3; Rth 4:19-20; 1Ch 2:10). As Naasson, Amminadab’s son, was prince at the first numbering of Israel in the second year from the Exodus, Amminadab probably died in Egypt before the Exodus, at the time of Israel’s heaviest oppression. His daughter Elisheba married Aaron, and bore Nadab (named from Amminadab), Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar; the earliest alliance of the kingly line of Judah and the priestly line of Aaron.

3. Chief of Uzziel’s 112 sons, whom David sent for to bring the ark to Jerusalem (1Ch 15:10-12). 1Ch 15:4. = Izhar, son of Kohath, father of Korah (1Ch 6:22; compare 1Ch 6:2; 1Ch 6:18).

(Hebrew Amminadab’, עִמַּינָדָב, kindred of the prince, Gesen.; man of generosity, Furst, who ascribes to עִםthe sense “homo" as its primitive meaning; the passages, Psa 110:3; Son 6:12, margin, seem, however, rather to suggest the sense my people is willing; Sept. and New Test. Α᾿μιναδάβ, but in Exo 6:23, Α᾿μειναδάβ), the name of three men. SEE AMMINADIB.

1. The father of Nahshon, which latter was phylarch of the tribe of Judah at the time of the Exode (Num 1:7; Num 2:3; Num 7:12; Num 7:17; Num 10:14). B.C. ante 1658. His father’s name was Ram, and he was the fourth in descent from Judah, the sixth in ascent from David, and the forty-sixth from Christ (Rth 4:19-20; 1Ch 2:10; Mat 1:4; Luk 3:33). His daughter Elisheba was married to Aaron (Exo 6:23).

2. A son of Kohath, the second son of Levi (1Ch 6:22; 1Ch 6:2; 1Ch 6:18, in which latter two verses he seems to be called IZHAR, q.v.). 3. A leader of the 112 descendants of Uzziel the Levite, who were appointed by David to remove the ark to Jerusalem (1Ch 15:10-11), B.C. cir. 1043.

People's Dictionary of the Bible by Edwin W. Rice (1893)

Amminadab (am-mĭn’a-dăb), kindred of the prince. 1. The son of Ram or Aram, who was great-grandson of Judah. His daughter, Elisheba, was the wife of Aaron; and his son Naashon, or Nahshon, prince of Judah in the wilderness. Exo 6:23; Num 1:7; Num 2:3; Num 7:12; Num 7:17; Num 10:14; Rth 4:19-20; 1Ch 2:10. 2. A son of Kohath. 1Ch 6:22. This is possibly a transcriber’s error, as elsewhere generally, Exo 6:18; 1Ch 6:2; 1Ch 6:18, he is called Izhar. 3. The chief in David’s time of the sons of Uzziel, a Levite, son of Kohath. 1Ch 15:10-11.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia by James Orr (ed.) (1915)

a-min´a-dab (עמּינדב, ‛ammı̄nādhābh = “my people (or my kinsman) is generous or noble”): three persons bearing this name are mentioned in the Old Testament.

(1) In Rth 4:19, Rth 4:20 and 1Ch 2:10 Amminadab is referred to as one of David’s ancestors. He was the great-grandson of Perez, a son of Judah (Gen 38:29; Gen 46:12) and the great-grandfather of Boaz, who again was the great-grandfather of David. Aaron’s wife, Elisheba, was a daughter of Amminadab (Exo 6:23), while one of the sons, namely, Nahshon, occupied an important position in the Judah-clan (Num 1:7; Num 2:3; Num 7:12; Num 10:14).

(2) In the first Book of Chronicles (1Ch 6:22) Amminadab is mentioned as a son of Kohath (and therefore a grandson of Levi) and the father of Korah. But in other genealogical passages (Exo 6:18; Num 3:19; 1Ch 6:2) the sons of Kohath are Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel, and in two places (Exo 6:21; 1Ch 6:38) Izhar is mentioned as the father of Korah.

(3) According to 1 Ch (1Ch 15:10, 1Ch 15:11) Amminadab was the name of a priest who took part in the removal of the ark to Jerusalem. He was the son of Uzziel, and therefore a nephew of Amminadab, son of Kohath (= Izhar).
