Exodus 13
Evans, W.Exodus 13:1-22
Exodus 13:1-22III. The Exodus Proper (Exodus 13-18) Sanctification of the Firstborn (Exodus 13:1-22) Exodus 13:1-22 recounts the sanctification of the firstborn, whether of man or beast. From the night of the Passover the firstborn belonged to God. What is redeemed belongs to God. Here we have God’ s claim (Exodus 13:1-2); the cleansing of heart as well as life signified by the unleavened bread (Exodus 13:3-10); God’ s claim to the firstborn repeated and again based on redemption (Exodus 13:11-16); and, finally, redemption, leading to a walk with God (Exodus 13:17-20), which is shown by a recognition of our own weakness (Exodus 13:17-18), by a daily dying to sin (Exodus 13:19-20), and by willingness to be guided in the divine way (Exodus 13:21-22).
