Psalms 104:13 Summary

[Psalms 104:13 tells us that God is the one who provides for the earth, watering the mountains and satisfying the earth with the fruit of His works. This means that God is the ultimate source of all that we need, and that He cares for the earth and everything in it, just like a good shepherd cares for his sheep, as seen in Psalms 23:1-4. We can trust in God's provision and care for our lives, just as the earth trusts in His works, and we can see examples of His provision in our own lives, just as we see it in the natural world, as described in Matthew 6:26.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that God 'waters the mountains from His chambers' in Psalms 104:13?

This phrase suggests that God is the ultimate source of all water and sustenance, and that He provides for the earth from His heavenly dwelling place, as seen in Psalms 29:10 where God is enthroned over the flood, and in Jeremiah 10:13 which describes God's control over the weather.

How does the earth become 'satisfied by the fruit of His works'?

The earth is satisfied when it receives the blessings and provisions that God has ordained for it, much like a tree is satisfied when it bears fruit, as described in Psalms 1:3, and this satisfaction is a result of God's works, not human effort alone, as stated in Isaiah 26:12.

What is the relationship between God's works and the natural world?

According to Psalms 104:13, God's works have a direct impact on the natural world, providing for its needs and sustaining it, which is also seen in Colossians 1:16-17 where all things are held together by God's power.

How can I apply the truth of Psalms 104:13 to my everyday life?

By recognizing God's sovereignty over all creation, you can trust in His provision and care for your life, just as the earth trusts in His provision, and this trust is rooted in His character, as described in Matthew 6:26 and Luke 12:22-24.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I have seen God 'water the mountains' in my own life, providing for me in unexpected ways?
  2. How can I cultivate a sense of trust in God's provision, like the earth trusts in His works?
  3. What are some 'fruits of His works' that I can thank God for in my life, and how can I use these blessings to glorify Him?
  4. In what ways can I partner with God in His work of providing for the earth and its inhabitants, as seen in Genesis 1:28-30?

Gill's Exposition on Psalms 104:13

He watereth the hills from his chambers,.... The house of his superior treasures, as the Targum.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Psalms 104:13

He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Psalms 104:13

He watereth the hills; which most need moisture, and have least of it in them. From his chambers; from the clouds, as above, . The earth is satisfied; by this means all the parts of the earth, the mountains as well as the valleys, are made fruitful. With the fruit of thy works; with the effects of those sweet showers, which he calls God’ s works, because he alone can and doth give them, as is noted, 14:22.

Trapp's Commentary on Psalms 104:13

Psalms 104:13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.Ver. 13. He watereth the hills from his chambers] That is from his clouds, he giveth water to hills and high places, where wells and rivers are not. The earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works] i.e. With the rain of thy clouds, dropping fatness.

Ellicott's Commentary on Psalms 104:13

(13) Chambers—i.e., of cloud, as in Psalms 104:3. Thy works.—If we go by the parallelism, this means the “rain,” here called God’s works, as in Psalms 65:9 (see Note), his “river.” Others prefer to see a general reference to the operations of nature which produce fruit.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Psalms 104:13

Verse 13. From his chambers] The clouds, as in Psalms 104:3. The earth is satisfied] The inhabitants of it.

Cambridge Bible on Psalms 104:13

13. Who giveth the mountains drink from his upper chambers. Palestine was “a land of mountains and valleys, drinking water of the rain of heaven” (Deuteronomy 11:11). It is not inaccessible mountain tops which the poet is thinking of, so much as the upland corn fields (Psalms 72:16), watered by the rain which God sends down from His “upper chambers” (Psalms 104:3), as the valleys are watered by streams. the fruit of thy works] Generally explained to mean the rain, as a product of the clouds which God has made. But this is harsh: it is much more natural to take the phrase in the simple sense of “fruit produced by God’s manifold operations.” Earth is fertilised by the rain and springs, and rejoices in its abundant produce. The thought is further developed in Psalms 104:14-18.

Barnes' Notes on Psalms 104:13

He watereth the hills from his chambers - The waters, as stated before, run in the valleys - in the natural channels made for them among the hills, Psalms 104:10.

Whedon's Commentary on Psalms 104:13

13. Watereth the hills from his chambers—See on Psalms 104:3; Psalms 104:10.
