Context — The Earth Swallows Korah
28Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things, for it was not my own doing:
29If these men die a natural death, or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me. 30But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”Cross References

Numbers 16:28 Summary
In Numbers 16:28, Moses is saying that the way we will know that God has sent him is by the amazing things that are about to happen, which will be clearly from God and not from Moses himself. This is like when God parted the Red Sea in Exodus 14:13-31, and it was clear that only God could do such a thing. Moses is showing humility and trust in God, recognizing that his leadership and actions are not his own doing, but rather a result of God's guidance and empowerment (see also Psalm 37:5, where it says to commit our way to the Lord and trust in Him). By trusting in God and recognizing His sovereignty, we can have confidence and peace in our lives, just like Moses did.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Moses trying to prove in Numbers 16:28?
Moses is trying to prove that the Lord has sent him to do all these things, and that it was not his own doing, as a way to authenticate his leadership and mission (see also Exodus 4:1-5, where Moses had similar concerns).
How does Moses know that the Lord has sent him?
Moses knows that the Lord has sent him because of the many signs and wonders that the Lord has performed through him, such as the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus 14:13-31, and the provision of manna in Exodus 16:4-36.
What is the significance of Moses saying 'it was not my own doing'?
Moses saying 'it was not my own doing' emphasizes his humility and recognition that his actions and leadership are not of his own strength or initiative, but rather a result of God's guidance and empowerment (see also Jeremiah 1:5, where Jeremiah is called by God).
How does this verse relate to the concept of faith and trust in God?
This verse highlights the importance of trusting in God's sovereignty and provision, rather than relying on human strength or abilities, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6, where it says to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.
