Context — The People Confess Their Sins
30You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not listen, so You gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.
31But in Your great compassion, You did not put an end to them; nor did You forsake them, for You are a gracious and compassionate God. 32So now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God who keeps His gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.Cross References

Nehemiah 9:30 Summary
[This verse reminds us that God is very patient with people, even when they disobey Him, as we see in Exodus 34:6 and Psalm 103:8. He wants us to turn back to Him and follow His laws, which are given to us for our own good, as seen in Deuteronomy 10:13. Unfortunately, the people in this verse refused to listen, and as a result, they were conquered by their enemies. This is a warning to us to listen to God's voice and obey His commands, so we can avoid similar consequences and experience His love and mercy instead.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that God was patient with the people for many years?
This refers to God's longsuffering nature, as seen in Exodus 34:6, where He is described as 'slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.' Despite the people's rebellion, God continued to warn and admonish them through His prophets, giving them numerous opportunities to repent and turn back to Him.
How did God's Spirit admonish the people through the prophets?
Through the prophets, God's Spirit spoke words of warning, correction, and guidance, calling the people to return to His law and covenant, as seen in verses like Isaiah 1:18, where the prophet invites the people to 'come, let us reason together,' and in Jeremiah 25:4-5, where the prophet warns of judgment if the people do not listen to God's words.
What were the consequences of the people's refusal to listen to God's prophets?
The people were given into the hands of the neighboring peoples, as stated in Nehemiah 9:30, which is a consequence of their disobedience, similar to what is described in Deuteronomy 28:25, where God warns that disobedience will lead to defeat and captivity at the hands of enemy nations.
Is this verse relevant to our lives today?
Yes, this verse reminds us that God is still patient and gracious, but also righteous and just, as seen in Romans 2:4, which says that God's kindness is meant to lead us to repentance, and in Hebrews 12:6, which warns that God disciplines those He loves, so we must be careful to listen to His voice and obey His commands.

- How can I be more attentive to God's Spirit speaking to me through His Word and through the voices of others, and what are some areas of my life where I need to repent and turn back to God's law?
- In what ways am I stubbornly shrugging my shoulders or stiffening my neck against God's will, and what are the potential consequences of my disobedience?
- How can I cultivate a deeper appreciation for God's patience and kindness, and how can I share this with others who may be struggling with feelings of guilt or shame?
