Nehemiah 7:13 Summary

This verse, Nehemiah 7:13, is talking about a specific family, the descendants of Zattu, who returned to Jerusalem after being in exile. There were 845 of them, and they are included in the list of families who came back to rebuild their homes and their lives. This shows that God cares about every person and every family, no matter how big or small they may be (as seen in Matthew 10:29-31). Just like the descendants of Zattu, we can trust that God is faithful and will take care of us, even when things seem uncertain or difficult (as promised in Romans 8:28).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the descendants of Zattu in Nehemiah 7:13?

The descendants of Zattu are listed among the other families who returned to Jerusalem after the exile, as recorded in Nehemiah 7:13, and their presence is a testament to God's faithfulness in preserving His people, as seen in Deuteronomy 30:3-5.

How does the number of descendants of Zattu compare to other families in the list?

The 845 descendants of Zattu are fewer than some of the other families, such as the descendants of Pahath-moab, who numbered 2,818, but this does not diminish their importance in the eyes of God, as Galatians 3:28 reminds us that we are all equal in Christ.

What can we learn from the fact that the descendants of Zattu are specifically mentioned in this verse?

The fact that the descendants of Zattu are mentioned by name in Nehemiah 7:13 shows that God is concerned with the details of our lives and that every individual and family is important to Him, as Psalm 138:8 reminds us that God will perfect that which concerns us.

How does this verse relate to the broader theme of restoration in the book of Nehemiah?

Nehemiah 7:13 is part of the larger narrative of the restoration of Jerusalem and the return of God's people to their homeland, as prophesied in Ezekiel 37:21-22, and it highlights the importance of community and family in this process.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does it mean for me to be part of a larger community of believers, and how can I contribute to the well-being of my own spiritual family?
  2. In what ways can I trust in God's faithfulness, just as the descendants of Zattu did, even when the circumstances of my life are uncertain?
  3. How can I balance my own sense of identity and purpose with the fact that I am part of a larger whole, just as the descendants of Zattu were part of the larger group of returned exiles?
  4. What are some ways that I can show appreciation for the 'smaller' or less prominent families and individuals in my own community, just as the descendants of Zattu are recognized in this verse?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Nehemiah 7:13

These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem

Ellicott's Commentary on Nehemiah 7:13

(5-73) The genealogical reckoning of the people, as the first step towards increasing the population of the metropolis, is determined on, not without express Divine suggestion; the allusion to this inspiration from God, is, as in Nehemiah 2:12, very emphatic. The original register of Zerubbabelis found and copied. The express language of both Ezra and Nehemiah makes it plain that this is no other than the list of those who came up with Zerubbabel and Joshua after the decree of Cyrus, in B.C. 538. Nehemiah’s own census follows, in Nehemiah 11. The exposition, especially as compared with Ezra 2, has been given on that chapter.
