Joshua 19:2 Summary

This verse talks about the cities that were part of the tribe of Simeon's inheritance, including Beersheba and Moladah. The fact that Simeon's inheritance was within the territory of Judah shows that God had a plan for each tribe and their unique circumstances, just like He has a plan for each of us (as seen in Jeremiah 29:11). The city of Beersheba was an important place in the Bible, where Abraham and Isaac dug wells and made promises to God (Genesis 21:31), and its inclusion in Simeon's inheritance reminds us of God's faithfulness to His people. By looking at this verse, we can see how God cares about the details of our lives and wants us to trust in His provision and guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of Beersheba in the Bible?

Beersheba, also known as Sheba, is an important city in the Bible, often associated with the patriarchs, such as Abraham and Isaac, who dug wells and made covenants with God there, as seen in Genesis 21:31 and Genesis 26:33.

Why is the tribe of Simeon's inheritance within the territory of Judah?

The tribe of Simeon's inheritance is within the territory of Judah because of the large population of Judah, as stated in Joshua 19:1, and also due to the fact that Simeon's allotment was scattered and not as prominent as other tribes, as hinted in Joshua 19:9.

What can we learn from the names of the cities listed in this verse?

The names of the cities, such as Beersheba and Moladah, often have significant meanings and can provide insight into the history and culture of the Israelites, similar to how the names of people and places are used to convey meaning in other parts of the Bible, like in Genesis 1:1 and Exodus 3:15.

How does this verse relate to the overall theme of the book of Joshua?

This verse is part of the larger narrative of the book of Joshua, which describes the conquest and division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel, as seen in Joshua 1:1-6 and Joshua 13:1-7, and serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness to His people.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the inclusion of Beersheba in the tribe of Simeon's inheritance reveal about God's sovereignty over the distribution of the land?
  2. How can we apply the principles of inheritance and distribution seen in this verse to our own lives and communities?
  3. What can we learn from the fact that the tribe of Simeon's inheritance is within the territory of Judah, and how does this relate to our own relationships with others?
  4. In what ways can we, like the Israelites, trust in God's provision and guidance as we navigate our own 'inheritance' in life?

Gill's Exposition on Joshua 19:2

And they had in their inheritance Beersheba and Sheba,.... Or, Beersheba, that is, Sheba; for so the particle "vau" is sometimes used (z), and must be so used here; or otherwise, instead of thirteen,

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Joshua 19:2

And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, or Sheba, and Moladah, Beer-sheba, and Sheba , [Septuagint, Samaa]. Keil, in reference to these towns, espouses the traditional view Beer-sheba, and Sheba , [Septuagint, Samaa].

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Joshua 19:2

Beer-sheba, Sheba, or, or Sheba, i.e. otherwise called; for that Beer-sheba and Sheba were one and the same city is manifest, both from , where all the cities are reckoned to be but thirteen; and from , where Simeon’ s cities are enumerated, and Sheba omitted as superfluous.

Trapp's Commentary on Joshua 19:2

Joshua 19:2 And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, or Sheba, and Moladah, Joshua 19:3 And Hazarshual, and Balah, and Azem, Joshua 19:4 And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah, Ver. 2-4, &c. These, though but bare names of places, should not be skipped over in our course of reading, as being a part of God’ s Holy Word: but to speak particularly of their signification or site, would be a work of more difficulty than use: and besides, it is but curiosity to search into those things whereof we can neither have proof nor profit.

Ellicott's Commentary on Joshua 19:2

XIX. OF SIMEON (Joshua 19:1-9). (1) Their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah.—The southern part of the inheritance of Judah was given up to Simeon. (See Judges 1:3; Judges 1:17.) In this fact a prophecy was fulfilled; for the effect of the allotment was to separate Simeon from the tribes with whom he had been united in the journey through the wilderness (viz., Reuben and Gad), who had cast off Simeon, and united themselves with the half tribe of Manasseh instead. Being also separated from Levi, Simeon was still further isolated: with the result that in the final separation of Israel and Judah, after Solomon’s death, the tribe of Simeon, though adhering to the kingdom of the ten tribes (for the children of Simeon were counted strangers in Judah—2 Chronicles 15:9), was separated from the territory of that kingdom by the whole breadth of the kingdom of Judah. Thus were Jacob’s words brought to pass, which he spoke on his death-bed regarding Simeon and Levi: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.(2) Beer-sheba.—Bir-es-seba. Sheba (Shema). (7) Ain, Remmon.—Timm er-Rumâmîn.The rest of the cities of Simeon are not identified in Conder’s Biblical Gazetteer, with the exception of Sharuhen (Tell esh-Sherî’ah, north-west of Beer-sheba). (9) The part of the children of Judah was too much for them.—In Judges 1 we read that Judah invoked the assistance of Simeon to complete the conquest of his inheritance, and also assisted Simeon to conquer his. This fact illustrates the character of the conquest of Canaan by Joshua, and shows that when his work was done, something was still left for the individual tribes to do.
