1 Chronicles 24:1–6 |
These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests. With the help of Eleazar’s descendant Zadok and Ithamar’s descendant Ahimelech, David divided them according to the offices of their service. Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than those of Ithamar, they were divided accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of Eleazar and eight from the descendants of Ithamar. Thus they were divided by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants. The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar. |
Ezra 8:2 Summary
This verse lists some of the family leaders who returned to Jerusalem with Ezra, including Gershom from the descendants of Phinehas, Daniel from the descendants of Ithamar, and Hattush from the descendants of David. These men were part of the priestly and royal lines of Israel, and their return to Jerusalem was a significant step in the restoration of God's people after the Babylonian exile (as seen in Ezra 1:1-4). The fact that these specific descendants are mentioned by name highlights God's faithfulness to His people and His promise to preserve and restore them, as seen in Isaiah 43:5-7. By reflecting on this verse, we can be encouraged to trust in God's faithfulness and to seek our own place in His larger story of redemption (Romans 8:28).

Trapp's Commentary on Ezra 8:2
Ezra 8:2 Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.Ver. 2. Of the sons of Phinehas] The son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, that renowned zealot, with whom, and his seed after him, God gave a covenant of peace, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, Numbers 25:12-13. Daniel] Not the prophet Daniel, God’ s darling, Daniel 9:23, but another of the same name, which might be some help to him. Of the sons of David] sc. Of David the king. See 1 Chronicles 3:22.
Ellicott's Commentary on Ezra 8:2
(2, 3) According to 1 Chronicles 3:22, Huttush was a descendant of David, and grandson of Shechaniab. The difficulty of the text therefore may probably be best solved by punctuating thus: “Of the sons of David. Hattush of the sons of Shechaniab. Of the sons of Pharosh, Zechariah.”
Adam Clarke's Commentary on Ezra 8:2
Verse 2. Gershom] One of the descendants of Phinehas, son of Eliazar.
Cambridge Bible on Ezra 8:2
2. The Priestly and Royal houses. The numbers from these houses are not given. They are placed in a position of honour at the head of the list. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom] R.V. Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. The punctuation is corrected throughout 2–14. The family of Phinehas (son of Eleazar, son of Aaron) is represented by Gershom. To his ‘house’ Ezra must have belonged (cf. Ezra 7:1-5).
Daniel] represented the line or family of Ithamar, Aaron’s younger son, and gave his name to a house (see Nehemiah 10:6). His name appears as Gamael in 1Es 8:29. From this mention of “the sons of Ithamar we gather that the priesthood was not, as Ezekiel required (Ezekiel 43:19, Ezekiel 45:15) limited to the line of Zadok. That Gershom and Daniel were not the only two priests, but heads of two ‘fathers’ houses’, is shown by Ezra 8:24. of the sons of David; Hattush] According to 1 Chronicles 3:22, the words “Of the sons of Shechaniah” (Ezra 8:3) belong to the genealogy of Hattush. “And the sons of Shechaniah (query, Zerubbabel’s grandson); Shemaiah: and the sons of Shemaiah; Hattush and Igal.” Hattush was therefore the grandson of Shechaniah, and (?) the great-great-grandson of Zerubbabel. The line of David was represented by the house of Shechaniah, which was represented by Hattush. 1Es 8:29 has “Of the sons of David, Lettus the son of Sechenias”, which in conjunction with the rest of the list seems to show that our text should run “Of the sons of David, Hattush, the son of Shechaniah”. This Hattush of the lineage of David must therefore not be confounded with the priest of the same name mentioned Nehemiah 10:4; Nehemiah 12:2.
Barnes' Notes on Ezra 8:2
Punctuate as follows: Ezra 8:2. ... of the sons of David, Hattush of the sons of Shechaniah. Ezra 8:3.
Whedon's Commentary on Ezra 8:2
2. Phinehas, the grandson, and Ithamar, the son of Aaron were represented by a body of descendants whose number is not here given, for Gershom and Daniel were evidently not the only priests that went up with Ezra.
