Context — The People’s Confession of Sin
12And the whole assembly responded in a loud voice: “Truly we must do as you say!
13But there are many people here, and it is the rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter. 14Let our leaders represent the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”Cross References

Ezra 10:12 Summary
[The people in Ezra 10:12 were saying they would do what Ezra told them to do, which was to separate themselves from their foreign wives and follow God's commands. This shows that they were truly sorry for their sins and wanted to make things right with God, just like in 1 John 1:9, where it says that if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. They were willing to take action and change their ways, which is an important part of following God, as seen in Matthew 4:17, where Jesus calls us to repent and follow Him.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What prompted the assembly to respond so strongly in Ezra 10:12?
The assembly responded in a loud voice because they were convicted of their sin after Ezra's rebuke in Ezra 10:10-11, and they wanted to make things right with God, just as the Israelites did in Exodus 24:3 and Exodus 24:7 when they agreed to follow God's commands.
Why did the assembly say 'Truly we must do as you say' in Ezra 10:12?
The assembly said this because they recognized the authority of Ezra's words, which were based on God's commands, and they wanted to demonstrate their commitment to following God's will, as expressed in Deuteronomy 29:29 and Psalm 119:34.
How does this response relate to the concept of repentance in the Bible?
The assembly's response in Ezra 10:12 is an example of repentance, which involves acknowledging sin, turning away from it, and turning towards God, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 1:9 and Acts 3:19, and it demonstrates their willingness to make amends and follow God's commands.
What can we learn from the assembly's unified response in Ezra 10:12?
We can learn the importance of unity and collective responsibility in responding to God's call to repentance, as seen in Acts 2:37-41, where the crowd responded together to Peter's sermon, and in 2 Chronicles 30:12, where the people of Judah and Israel unified to follow God's commands.
