6 2 Kings 17:7–23 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They had worshiped other gods and walked in the customs of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites, as well as in the practices introduced by the kings of Israel. The Israelites secretly did things against the LORD their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city, they built high places in all their cities. They set up for themselves sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree. They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them. They did wicked things, provoking the LORD to anger. They served idols, although the LORD had told them, “You shall not do this thing.” Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD warned Israel and Judah, saying, “Turn from your wicked ways and keep My commandments and statutes, according to the entire Law that I commanded your fathers and delivered to you through My servants the prophets.” But they would not listen, and they stiffened their necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their God. They rejected His statutes and the covenant He had made with their fathers, as well as the decrees He had given them. They pursued worthless idols and themselves became worthless, going after the surrounding nations that the LORD had commanded them not to imitate. They abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves two cast idols of calves and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the host of heaven and served Baal. They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire and practiced divination and soothsaying. They devoted themselves to doing evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger. So the LORD was very angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained, and even Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but lived according to the customs Israel had introduced. So the LORD rejected all the descendants of Israel. He afflicted them and delivered them into the hands of plunderers, until He had banished them from His presence. When the LORD had torn Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king, and Jeroboam led Israel away from following the LORD and caused them to commit a great sin. The Israelites persisted in all the sins that Jeroboam had committed and did not turn away from them. Finally, the LORD removed Israel from His presence, as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their homeland into Assyria, where they are to this day.
7 Daniel 9:5–10 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled. We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances. We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, and fathers, and to all the people of the land. To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but this day we are covered with shame—the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel near and far, in all the countries to which You have driven us because of our unfaithfulness to You. O LORD, we are covered with shame—our kings, our leaders, and our fathers—because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against Him and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in His laws, which He set before us through His servants the prophets.
8 Leviticus 26:24 then I will act with hostility toward you, and I will strike you sevenfold for your sins.
9 Isaiah 1:20 But if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
10 Isaiah 3:11 Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.

Ezekiel 39:24 Summary

[Ezekiel 39:24 tells us that God dealt with the people of Israel according to their sin and hid His face from them, which means He stopped blessing and protecting them because of their disobedience. This is similar to what happened in Deuteronomy 31:17, where God also hid His face from the Israelites due to their sin. However, as seen in Ezekiel 39:25, God is a merciful God who wants to restore and have compassion on His people. He desires a personal relationship with us and wants us to live a life that is pleasing to Him, as mentioned in Psalm 51:17 and Matthew 5:8.]

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did God hide His face from the people of Israel?

What does it mean for God to deal with someone according to their uncleanness and transgressions?

When God deals with someone according to their uncleanness and transgressions, it means He judges them based on their sinful actions, as mentioned in Ezekiel 39:24, similar to what is written in Psalm 62:12 and Jeremiah 17:10.

Is God's hiding of His face a permanent condition?

No, God's hiding of His face is not a permanent condition, as seen in Ezekiel 39:25, where God promises to restore Jacob and have compassion on the whole house of Israel, demonstrating His merciful nature, as stated in Exodus 34:6-7 and Psalm 103:8-9.

How does this verse relate to God's character?

This verse showcases God's holiness and justice, as He cannot tolerate sin and must judge it, as stated in Ezekiel 39:24, while also highlighting His mercy and compassion, as seen in Ezekiel 39:25 and other verses like Lamentations 3:22-23 and Romans 11:25-27.
