38And I will purge you of those who rebel and transgress against Me. I will bring them out of the land in which they dwell, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
39And as for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you. But afterward, you will surely listen to Me, and you will no longer defile My holy name with your gifts and idols. 40For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices.Cross References

Ezekiel 20:38 Summary
[Ezekiel 20:38 is a promise from God that He will cleanse and purify His people from those who are rebellious and disobedient, and this is a theme that is also found in other parts of the Bible, such as Genesis 18:25 and Matthew 25:31-46. This verse is saying that God will separate the obedient from the disobedient, and that He will bring the obedient into a place of blessing and closeness with Him, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. As we reflect on this verse, we can ask ourselves if there are areas in our own lives where we need to be purified and made obedient to God, and we can trust that God will fulfill His promise to bring us into a place of obedience and blessing, just as He did for the Israelites (Exodus 6:7). By obeying God and following His commands, we can demonstrate our loyalty and commitment to Him, and deepen our understanding of His character and ways.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be 'purged' in Ezekiel 20:38?
To be purged means to be cleansed or purified from those who are rebellious and disobedient, as seen in Ezekiel 20:38, and this is a theme that is also found in other parts of the Bible, such as Genesis 18:25 and Matthew 25:31-46.
Why will the rebellious not enter the land of Israel?
The rebellious will not enter the land of Israel because they have transgressed against God, as stated in Ezekiel 20:38, and this is in line with the teachings of Deuteronomy 28:1-14, where obedience to God's commands is a condition for entering and remaining in the Promised Land.
How will the people know that God is the LORD?
The people will know that God is the LORD when they see Him fulfill His promise to purge the rebellious and bring the obedient into the land, as stated in Ezekiel 20:38, and this is similar to what is said in Exodus 6:7, where God says 'I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God'.
Is this verse only applicable to the Israelites?
While Ezekiel 20:38 is specifically addressed to the house of Israel, the principles of obedience, rebellion, and purification are applicable to all people, as seen in Romans 11:17-24 and 1 Peter 1:1-2, where Gentiles are also called to obey God and be part of His people.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I can examine my own heart and life to see if there are areas of rebellion against God that need to be purged?

- In what ways can I demonstrate my loyalty and commitment to God, just as the obedient Israelites were called to do in Ezekiel 20:38?
- What does it mean for me to 'know that God is the LORD' in my daily life, and how can I deepen my understanding of His character and ways?
