Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. There are to be three cups shaped like almond blossoms on the first branch, each with buds and petals, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches that extend from the lampstand. And on the lampstand there shall be four cups shaped like almond blossoms with buds and petals. For the six branches that extend from the lampstand, a bud must be under the first pair of branches, a bud under the second pair, and a bud under the third pair. The buds and branches are to be all of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold. Make seven lamps and set them up on the lampstand so that they illuminate the area in front of it. Exodus 35:14 Summary

The lampstand in the tabernacle was a special symbol of God's presence and guidance for the Israelites. It was to be kept burning continually, using pure oil, to provide light in the Holy Place. Just like the lampstand, Jesus is our light in the darkness, and we can reflect His light to others by following Him and prioritizing time with Him in prayer and Scripture, as seen in Matthew 5:14-16. By trusting in God's guidance and presence, we can be a light in the darkness for those around us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the lampstand in the tabernacle?

The lampstand, also known as the menorah, symbolized the light of God's presence and guidance, as seen in Exodus 25:37, where it is commanded to be made and placed in the tabernacle to give light in the Holy Place.

What kind of oil was used for the light?

The Bible doesn't specify the exact type of oil used, but according to Exodus 27:20, the oil used was to be 'pure oil of pressed olives' to keep the lamps burning continually.

Why was the lampstand important for the Israelites?

The lampstand was important because it provided light in the tabernacle, symbolizing God's presence and guidance, as seen in Psalm 119:105, where the word of God is compared to a lamp for our feet.

How does this relate to our lives today?

Just as the lampstand provided light in the tabernacle, Jesus Christ is our light in the darkness, as seen in John 8:12, where He says, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the lampstand represent in my life, and how can I reflect the light of God's presence to those around me?
  2. How can I, like the Israelites, prioritize the things that bring light and guidance into my life, such as reading Scripture and prayer?
  3. What are some ways I can be a light in the darkness for those around me, and what does that look like in my daily life?
  4. How can I trust in God's guidance and presence, even in the darkest of times, just as the Israelites trusted in the lampstand to provide light in the tabernacle?

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 35:14

(10-19) And every wise hearted among you.—The first appeal is to all; all may contribute something towards the materials of the sacred structure. But the second appeal is to some only. The “wise-hearted” alone can take part in the actual construction, and “make all that the Lord hath commanded.” On the expression “wise – hearted,” see Note on Exodus 28:3. It includes skill of various kinds and degrees, even that of poor women, who “did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen” (Exodus 35:25). In enumerating the things to be constructed, Moses follows, not the order of the revelations made to him, but what may be called the natural order: first, the Tabernacle as a whole; then its various parts (Exodus 35:11); after this, its contents—those of the Holy of Holies (Exodus 35:12), of the Holy Place (Exodus 35:13-15), and of the Court (Exodus 35:16-18); finally, the dress to be worn by those who conducted the services (Exodus 35:19). On the Tabernacle and its parts, see Exodus 26:1-37; on the Ark, the staves, and the mercy-seat, Exodus 25:10-15; on the “veil of the covering,” Exodus 26:31; on the table and the candlestick, Exodus 25:23-30; on the incense altar, Exodus 30:1-10; on the anointing oil, Exodus 30:23-25; on the sweet incense, Exodus 30:34-35; on the hanging for the door, Exodus 26:36; on the altar of burnt offering, Exodus 27:1-8; on the laver and its foot, Exodus 30:17-21; on the hangings of the Court, its pillars, sockets, pins, &c., Exodus 27:9-19; and on “the cloths of service,” Exodus 28:2-42. (On the true meaning of the expression, “cloths of service,” see Note on Exodus 31:10.)

Cambridge Bible on Exodus 35:14

10–19. All skilled workmen among the people invited to assist in the task of making the objects prescribed. There is nothing in chs. 25–31 corresponding to this invitation: Exodus 28:3 relates to the priestly vestments alone. The enumeration of things to be made begins with the Dwelling, and then proceeds in order from the Holy of holies to the Court, ending with the vestments for the priests.
