Context — God’s Covenant with David
6For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling.
7In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to shepherd My people Israel, ‘Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’ 8Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.Cross References

2 Samuel 7:6 Summary
This verse means that God doesn't need a fancy house to live in, and He has been happy to move around with His people in a tent. It shows that God is not limited by a physical building, and He can be with us anywhere, as seen in Matthew 28:20. This is a comforting thought for us, because it means that God can be with us no matter where we are or what we're going through, and we can trust in His presence, just like the Israelites did in the wilderness (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of God saying He has not dwelt in a house since bringing the Israelites out of Egypt?
This statement emphasizes God's presence with His people, even in temporary dwellings, as seen in Exodus 25:8 where God says He will dwell among them, and it highlights the fact that a physical house is not necessary for God's presence, as mentioned in Acts 7:48-49.
Why does God mention moving about with a tent as His dwelling?
God is emphasizing His mobility and ability to be present with His people wherever they are, as seen in the wilderness wanderings recorded in Numbers 9:15-23, and this contrasts with the idea of a fixed, permanent house.
Is God opposed to the idea of building a house for Him?
Not necessarily, as seen in verse 13 where God says David's son will build a house for Him, but rather God is pointing out that He has not required a physical house to dwell among His people, as also mentioned in 1 Kings 8:27-30.
What can we learn from God's statement about not dwelling in a house?
We can learn that God's presence is not limited to a physical location, as stated in Psalm 139:7-10, and that He can be with us wherever we are, which is a comforting truth for believers.
