He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.

Context

Amaziah Reigns in Judah

¹In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz over Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.²He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.³And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David had done. He did everything as his father Joash had done.

Summary

In 2 Kings 14:2, we see that Amaziah became king of Judah at the age of twenty-five and reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly, as his heart was not fully devoted to God. Despite his initial efforts to follow God's ways, Amaziah's reign ultimately faced challenges and consequences due to his wavering commitment to the Lord.

At least externally, and at the beginning of his reign: yet not like David his father; not with a perfect heart, with that sincerity and uprightness as he did, see Ch2 25:2, he did according to all things as Joash his father did; who at first reigned well, and then fell into idolatry, as this his son did.
