Context — Civil War against Jeroboam
7Then worthless and wicked men gathered around him to resist Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young, inexperienced, and unable to resist them.
8And now you think you can resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army, and you have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods. 9But did you not drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites? And did you not make priests for yourselves as do the peoples of other lands? Now whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of things that are not gods.Cross References

2 Chronicles 13:7 Summary
This verse tells us that when Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, was young and didn't know much, some bad people gathered around him and tried to get him to do wrong things. This happened because Rehoboam was not strong enough to say no to them, as it says in 2 Chronicles 13:7. It's like when we're around people who are not good for us, and they try to get us to do things that are not pleasing to God, as seen in Psalm 1:1. We need to be careful about who we hang out with and make sure we're surrounding ourselves with people who will help us make good choices, as advised in Proverbs 27:17.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of men gathered around Jeroboam to resist Rehoboam?
According to 2 Chronicles 13:7, worthless and wicked men gathered around him, taking advantage of Rehoboam's youth and inexperience, as seen in other biblical accounts of leaders being surrounded by ungodly advisors, such as in 1 Kings 12:8.
Why was Rehoboam unable to resist these men?
Rehoboam was young and inexperienced, making him vulnerable to the influence of worthless and wicked men, as stated in 2 Chronicles 13:7, and this is a common theme in the Bible, where youth and inexperience can lead to poor decision-making, as seen in 1 Timothy 4:12.
What can we learn from Rehoboam's situation about the importance of surrounding ourselves with godly advisors?
We can learn that surrounding ourselves with godly advisors is crucial, as seen in Proverbs 11:14, which states that where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in the abundance of counselors there is victory.
How does this verse relate to the broader theme of leadership in the Bible?
This verse highlights the importance of wise and godly leadership, as seen in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, which outlines the qualifications for church leaders, and serves as a reminder that leaders must be careful about the company they keep and the advice they receive.
