1 Kings 7:35 Summary

[The circular band at the top of each stand, as described in 1 Kings 7:35, shows us that God values unity and completeness, just like He did when He created the world and saw that it was very good, as mentioned in Genesis 1:31. This reminds us to strive for excellence in all we do, including our service to God, as taught in Colossians 3:23-24. The fact that the supports and panels were cast as a unit with the top of the stand highlights the importance of careful planning and attention to detail, which are also essential in our own spiritual journeys.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the circular band at the top of each stand in 1 Kings 7:35?

The circular band at the top of each stand, as described in 1 Kings 7:35, signifies the unity and completeness of God's design, much like the unity and completeness we see in the creation account in Genesis 1:31 and the unity of believers in Jesus Christ as described in Ephesians 4:13.

Why were the supports and panels cast as a unit with the top of the stand?

The supports and panels being cast as a unit with the top of the stand, as mentioned in 1 Kings 7:35, indicates the precision and attention to detail that went into the construction of the temple, reflecting the careful planning and execution of God's will, as seen in Proverbs 3:19-20 and Jeremiah 32:17.

How does this verse relate to the overall theme of the temple's construction in 1 Kings 7?

This verse highlights the meticulous craftsmanship and design that went into the construction of the temple, emphasizing the importance of worshipping God with excellence and precision, as also seen in Exodus 35:30-35 and 1 Chronicles 28:11-13.

What can we learn from the craftsmanship described in 1 Kings 7:35 about our own service to God?

The verse encourages believers to strive for excellence in their service to God, just as the craftsmen did in building the temple, as taught in Colossians 3:23-24 and 2 Timothy 2:15, to bring glory to His name.

Reflection Questions

  1. As I reflect on the craftsmanship in 1 Kings 7:35, what areas of my life can I improve to bring more glory to God?
  2. How can I apply the principle of unity and completeness, as seen in the circular band at the top of each stand, to my own spiritual journey?
  3. What does the attention to detail in the construction of the temple teach me about the importance of being diligent in my own walk with God?
  4. In what ways can I, like the skilled craftsmen, use my talents and abilities to serve God and build up the body of Christ?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Kings 7:35

And in the top of the base was there a round compass of half a cubit high,.... The same with the chapiter, 1 Kings 7:31 which rose up straight half a cubit, and widening upwards half a cubit more,

And the work of the bases was on this manner: they had borders, and the borders were between the ledges: No JFB commentary on these verses.

Trapp's Commentary on 1 Kings 7:35

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Kings 7:35

(13-50) The exceedingly graphic and elaborate description of the work of Hiram on the vessels and furniture of the Temple, and on the great pillars, bears on the very face of it the most evident marks of historical accuracy and of the use of contemporary documents, and it has, moreover, great antiquarian interest. Looked at in itself, it shows that the Temple (like many other buildings in the comparative infancy of architecture) depended for its effect, not so much on size or proportion, as on rich material, elaborate decoration, and costly furniture, on which all the resources both of treasure and art were lavished. But besides this, the sense of the especial sacredness attached to all the vessels of the Temple, which was hereafter to degenerate into a Pharisaic superstition (see Matthew 23:16-18), suggested the most careful record of every detail, and reverently traced to “the Spirit of God” the gift of “wisdom of heart” “to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,” as in Bezaleel and Aholiab for the Tabernacle (Exodus 35:31-32), so also in Hiram for the Temple. There is something especially remarkable in this broad comprehensiveness of conception which recognises the illuminating and inspiring power of the Spirit of God, not only in the moral and religious teaching of the prophet and the devotional utterances of the psalmist, but in the warlike enthusiasm of the Judge, the sagacity of the statesman, the imaginative skill of the artist, and the wisdom of the philosophic thinker. Nothing could more strikingly illustrate the Apostolic declaration: “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4).

Cambridge Bible on 1 Kings 7:35

Barnes' Notes on 1 Kings 7:35

A round compass - A circular elevation, half a cubit high, rather than a circular depression, half a cubit deep. Compare 1 Kings 7:29.

Whedon's Commentary on 1 Kings 7:35

35. Round compass of half a cubit high — This was the convex roof of the smaller base above, (k k in figure,) which rested on the top of the ledges, (1 Kings 7:29,) and supported in turn the more immediate base-work of the laver.
