And Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had set up, and he installed priests in Bethel for the high places he had set up.

³¹Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people priests who were not Levites. ³²And Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had set up, and he installed priests in Bethel for the high places he had set up.

Summary

This verse describes King Jeroboam's decision to establish his own religious system in the northern kingdom of Israel, contrary to God's commands. Jeroboam feared that if his people continued to worship in Jerusalem, they would eventually turn their allegiance back to King Rehoboam of Judah. By setting up golden calves in Bethel and Dan as alternative places of worship, Jeroboam led the Israelites into idolatry and away from the true worship of God in the temple. This act of disobedience ultimately led to the downfall of the northern kingdom and serves as a cautionary tale against forsaking God's ways for human convenience or political gain.

Ordained a feast - The Jews held their feast of tabernacles on the fifteenth day of the seventh month; Jeroboam, who would meet the prejudices of the people as far as he could, appointed a similar feast on the fifteenth of the eighth month; thus appearing to hold the thing while he subverted the ordinance.
