Adam Clarke Bible Commentary
Dwelleth in him - i.e. in God; and he - God, in him - the believer. And hereby we know - We know by the Spirit which he hath given us that we dwell in God, and God in us. It was not by conjecture or inference that Christians of old knew they were in the favor of God, it was by the testimony of God's own Spirit in their hearts; and this testimony was not given in a transient manner, but was constant and abiding while they continued under the influence of that faith that worketh by love. Every good man is a temple of the Holy Ghost, and wherever he is, he is both light and power. By his power he works; by his light he makes both himself and his work known. Peace of conscience and joy in the Holy Ghost must proceed from the indwelling of that Holy Spirit; and those who have these blessings must know that they have them, for we cannot have heavenly peace and heavenly joy without knowing that we have them. But this Spirit in the soul of a believer is not only manifest by its effects, but it bears its own witness to its own indwelling. So that a man not only knows that he has this Spirit from the fruits of the Spirit, but he knows that he has it from its own direct witness. It may be said, "How can these things be?" And it may be answered, By the power, light, and mercy of God. But that such things are, the Scriptures uniformly attest, and the experience of the whole genuine Church of Christ, and of every truly converted soul, sufficiently proves. As the wind bloweth where it listeth, and we cannot tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth, so is every one that is born of the Spirit: the thing is certain, and fully known by its effects; but how this testimony is given and confirmed is inexplicable. Every good man feels it, and knows he is of God by the Spirit which God has given him.

"Spiritual" Love
By A.W. Tozer0Spiritual LoveThe Role of the Holy SpiritJHN 4:24JHN 14:17JHN 15:26ROM 5:51CO 2:122CO 5:14GAL 5:22EPH 3:161JN 3:241JN 4:19A.W. Tozer emphasizes that true spiritual love for Jesus transcends human affection and can only be expressed through the Holy Spirit. He argues that while humans can love Jesus in a way similar to loving historical figures, this pales in comparison to the divine love that the Spirit enables. Tozer warns against superficial expressions of love that lack the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, asserting that genuine love for Christ must recognize Him as God. He critiques modern expressions of love for Jesus that do not stem from a deep spiritual understanding or acknowledgment of human sinfulness. Ultimately, Tozer calls for a love that honors Jesus as the Eternal Son, empowered by the Spirit within us.

It then progresses to regeneration, where the Holy Ghost creates a new spiritual life of loyalty and love within the believer, culminating in entire sanctification and the eradication of evil from the heart through perfect love.

He emphasizes the importance of individual accountability before God, highlighting that group affiliations or privileges do not determine one's status as a child of God. O'Neill draws attention to the need for a personal, intimate relationship with God's Spirit, which manifests in genuine obedience and submission to God's will.

He explains that the Holy Spirit not only convicts individuals of their sin but also brings them to new life, enabling them to accept the gospel and experience a radical change akin to being 'born again.' Morris highlights that this spiritual rebirth is not a result of human effort but a supernatural act of God, affirming that the Christian life begins and is sustained through the work of the Holy Spirit.

He critiques those who, like the Gnostics, boast of spiritual enlightenment yet fail to demonstrate obedience, revealing their true ignorance. Gill asserts that true knowledge of God is evidenced by a life of obedience, and without this, one is a liar and lacks the truth of the Gospel in their heart.
The First Fruits of the Spirit
By John Wesley0Freedom from CondemnationWalking In The SpiritISA 43:25JHN 3:17ROM 8:11CO 2:122CO 1:12GAL 5:16PHP 1:61TI 1:8HEB 10:141JN 3:24John Wesley emphasizes that those who are in Christ Jesus and walk according to the Spirit are free from condemnation. He explains that true believers, justified by faith, are no longer under the law's condemnation due to their past, present, or even inward sins, as they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live righteously. Wesley clarifies that while believers may struggle with sin, their sincere efforts to walk in the Spirit ensure they are not condemned by God or their own conscience. He encourages believers to trust in God's grace and to continue striving for holiness, knowing that their faith in Christ secures their standing before God. The sermon concludes with practical inferences on living a life led by the Spirit, free from fear and condemnation.
The Inseparability of Faith and Obedience
By A.W. Tozer0ObedienceFaithMAT 7:21JHN 14:21ACT 5:32ROM 1:5JAS 2:141PE 1:21JN 2:41JN 3:241JN 5:2A.W. Tozer emphasizes that faith and obedience are inseparable, akin to two sides of the same coin, and that separating them leads to spiritual weakness and moral decline. He argues that true understanding of spiritual truth requires a full commitment to obedience, as demonstrated in John 7:17, where willingness to do God's will precedes knowledge. Tozer warns against the trend of prioritizing faith over obedience, which undermines genuine Christianity. He cites various scriptures to support his assertion that saving faith cannot exist without a corresponding willingness to obey. Ultimately, he concludes that one cannot be a true Christian without embracing both faith and obedience.

This knowledge is evidenced by keeping God's commandments, which are rooted in faith and love rather than mere external observance. Gill distinguishes between the knowledge that leads to salvation and that which is superficial, asserting that genuine faith produces love and obedience to Christ's teachings. He highlights the importance of understanding God's grace and the role of Christ as our advocate and propitiation for sin. Ultimately, true knowledge of God results in a transformed life that reflects His commands and love.
Christ in You, the Hope of Glory

He explains that this mystery, once hidden, signifies that both Jews and Gentiles share the same relationship with God through Christ. Reidhead stresses that true Christianity is not merely about doctrines or rituals, but about a personal, transformative relationship with Jesus Christ, who is our life, wisdom, and righteousness. He encourages believers to recognize that the presence of Christ within them is the source of their hope and strength, both for the present and the future. Ultimately, he calls for a deeper understanding of this relationship, urging the congregation to invite Christ into their hearts and lives.
The Indwelling Master
By Richard E. Bieber0LUK 21:14JHN 14:23ACT 4:8GAL 2:201JN 3:24Richard E. Bieber preaches about the transformative power of Christ living inside believers, guiding, empowering, and inspiring them to break free from old habits and attitudes. This indwelling presence of Christ allows individuals to see, hear, speak, and act in alignment with His will, leading to a new outlook and a life filled with love and compassion. The sermon emphasizes the importance of having a living connection with Jesus, allowing Him to dwell in every part of our being, transforming our faith into a powerful, joyful, and alive experience.
The Witness of the Spirit
By Harmon A. Baldwin0ISA 1:18ROM 8:161CO 2:121JN 3:241JN 5:6Harmon A. Baldwin preaches about the importance of receiving the Spirit's witness to the cleansing of the heart for certainty in experiencing holiness. A failure to receive this witness leads to unsteadiness and uncertainty in one's faith journey. The witness of the Spirit is a direct revelation of the fact of inwrought holiness, accompanied by a sense of cleanness, the blood of Christ flowing over the soul, and a deep sense of abasement. Baldwin emphasizes the need for a clear, unmistakable, and positive witness from the Holy Spirit to confirm the work of sanctification in the heart.

He explains that the Holy Ghost is the third Person in the Trinity, essential for true holiness and communion with God. Whitefield provides scriptural marks to determine if one has received the Holy Ghost, including having a spirit of prayer, refraining from willful sin, conquering the world's temptations, loving one another, and even loving our enemies. He addresses different classes of believers, urging sinners to repent, warning against false hopes of salvation, encouraging those under spiritual struggle to persevere, and celebrating those who have received the Holy Ghost and are growing in sanctification.
