1 Chronicles 27:31 Summary

This verse tells us about Jaziz the Hagrite, who was in charge of King David's flocks. It shows that King David had many officials who helped him manage his property and kingdom, which is similar to how Jesus teaches us to be good stewards of the resources God has given us (Matthew 25:14-30). King David's ability to trust others with responsibilities is also a great example for us, as we learn to trust God and trust others in our own lives (Psalm 37:3-7). By looking at King David's life, we can learn valuable lessons about leadership, stewardship, and trust in God's providence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of role did Jaziz the Hagrite have in King David's administration?

Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the flocks, which indicates he was responsible for the care and management of King David's sheep, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:31. This role is similar to the one described in Genesis 37:2, where Joseph was tending his father's flocks.

Why does the Bible provide such detailed information about King David's officials?

The Bible provides detailed information about King David's officials to demonstrate the king's organizational skills and his ability to delegate tasks to capable individuals, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:31. This is also a testament to the king's trust in God's providence, as expressed in Proverbs 22:29.

What can we learn from the fact that King David had officials in charge of his property?

The fact that King David had officials in charge of his property teaches us about the importance of stewardship and responsible management of resources, as seen in Matthew 25:14-30. It also highlights the value of trusting others with responsibilities, as demonstrated in Exodus 18:13-27.

How does this verse relate to the broader context of King David's life and reign?

This verse is part of a larger section in 1 Chronicles that describes the organization and administration of King David's kingdom, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27. It provides insight into the king's leadership style and his efforts to establish a stable and prosperous kingdom, as described in 2 Samuel 23:1-7.

And over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagerite. All these were the rulers of the substance which was king David's. Rulers of the substance which was king David's.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 27:31

(31) And over the flocks.—Of sheep and goats. Jaziz the Hagerite.—See 1 Chronicles 5:10-19, for the conquest of East Gilead, the home of the Hagrim, or “Hagerites,” by the tribe of Reuben, in the days of Saul. David’s herds of camels and flocks of small cattle may have grazed in the pastures east of the Jordan, under the charge of his Bedawi overseers. All these were the rulers of the substance which was king David’s.—The word rendered “rulers” is sârîm, “captains” or “princes.” (See 1 Chronicles 27:22.) The same term is translated “stewards” in 1 Chronicles 28:1. Substance (rĕ ?kûsh) is an old word, denoting especially the moveable wealth of a nomad chief. (Comp. Genesis 12:5; Genesis 14:21.) The wealth of David consisted partly of flocks and herds, but partly also of the produce of husbandry, and, no doubt, of commerce. (See 1 Chronicles 14:1; 1 Chronicles 22:4.) The period of the kings saw Israel a settled nation, that had exchanged the purely nomad life for an ordered social existence.
