1 Chronicles 27:15 Summary

This verse tells us about a man named Heldai the Netophathite, who was a leader in King David's army. He was in charge of a group of 24,000 men, and they served for one month out of the year. This system allowed for a fair distribution of responsibilities and duties among the leaders, similar to the way God ordained the Sabbath rest in Exodus 20:8-11. By studying this verse, we can learn about the importance of organization, cooperation, and rest, as seen in other parts of the Bible, such as 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, which talks about the different parts of the body of Christ working together in harmony.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Heldai the Netophathite and what was his role?

Heldai the Netophathite was a military leader in King David's army, responsible for a division of 24,000 men, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:15. His family background is also noted as being from the family of Othniel, which is significant in the context of the Israelites' history, as mentioned in Joshua 15:17.

Why did King David organize his army into monthly divisions?

King David organized his army into monthly divisions to ensure a consistent and fair distribution of responsibilities and duties among his leaders, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:1-15. This system allowed for a rotation of leaders and troops, providing rest and relief for the soldiers, similar to the principle of Sabbath rest in Exodus 20:8-11.

What can we learn from the fact that each division had 24,000 men?

The fact that each division had 24,000 men suggests that King David had a large and well-organized army, which was a testament to his leadership and God's blessing on his reign, as mentioned in 2 Samuel 5:10. This also highlights the importance of unity and cooperation among the tribes of Israel, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:16-17.

How does this verse relate to the broader context of King David's reign?

This verse is part of a larger section in 1 Chronicles 27 that describes the organization and leadership of King David's army, as well as the officers in charge of the tribes of Israel. It provides insight into King David's administrative skills and his efforts to maintain order and stability in the kingdom, as seen in 1 Chronicles 26:30-32.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 27:15

(15) Heldai (living).—The same as “Heled” (life) in 1 Chronicles 11:30. Of Othniel.—Of the clan so called. (Comp. Joshua 15:17.) His town was Netophah, near Bethlehem. Of the whole list of twelve generals, it is noticeable that eight—viz., the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth—belonged to the royal tribe of Judah. Of the remaining four, the second perhaps, and the ninth certainly, was a Benjamite; the seventh and eleventh were Ephraimites.

Thus Heldai was not of pure Israelite descent, but belonged to the Kenizzites (Kenaz), a younger branch of the Calebites, who, it seems, were a tribe incorporated into Judah either shortly before or during the conquest of Canaan.
