1 Chronicles 2:20 Summary

This verse tells us about the family of Hur, who was the father of Uri, and Uri was the father of Bezalel. Bezalel was a very skilled craftsman who helped build the tabernacle, a special place for God to dwell among the Israelites, as described in Exodus 35:30. By looking at the genealogy in 1 Chronicles, we can see how God weaves together the stories of different people to fulfill His plans, just like He did with the Israelites in the book of Exodus.

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 2:20

And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezaleel. Who yet is not thought to be the same Bezaleel we read of in Exodus 31:2 though the fathers and grandfathers of both have the same names, and were of the same tribe.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 2:20

And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 2:20

(20) Hur begat Uri . . . Bezaleel.—See Exodus 31:2, which states that: “ Bezaleel, son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,” was divinely qualified for building the Tent of Meeting. Bezaleel is no doubt a person, but Hur is probably a Calebite clan, established at “Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem” (Genesis 35:19).

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 2:20

Verse 20. Uri begat Bezaleel] This was probably the famous artist mentioned Exodus 31:2, &c., where see the notes.

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 2:20

18–20. The Genealogy of Bezaleel It is quite in accordance with the mind of the Chronicler to single out the artificer of the Tabernacle (“Tent of Meeting”) and tell his family history (cp. Exodus 31:2 ff.).
