Revelation 16

BSA

1 Then I heard [a great, loud] a loud voice [a sound or noise] from the temple [a sacred place of worship] saying to the seven [complete or perfect number] angels [heavenly messengers], “Go [depart or leave], pour out [to pour or shed] on the earth [the soil or ground] the seven [complete or perfect number] bowls [a broad, shallow cup] of God’s [the one true deity] wrath [intense anger or displeasure].” word study 2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl [a broad, shallow cup] on the earth [soil, land], and loathsome [evil], malignant [bad] sores [open wounds] broke out on those who had the mark [image or sign] of the beast [a wild or dangerous animal] and worshiped [showing respect and honor] its image [likeness or representation]. word study 3 And the second angel poured out his bowl [vessel, container of God’s wrath] into the sea [large body of water], and it turned to blood [as of a dead man] like that of the dead [lifeless, without spiritual life], and every [all, without exception] living thing [soul, creature] in the sea [ocean] died [came to an end, perished]. word study 4 And the third angel poured out his bowl [a broad, shallow cup] into the rivers [streams of running water] and springs [sources of water] of water [literal or figurative], and they turned to [became or came into being] blood [the atoning blood of Christ or kindred relationship]. word study 5 And I heard [perceived and understood] the angel [messenger of God] of the waters [literal or spiritual] say: “Righteous [just, fair, and innocent] are You, O Holy One [sacred, pure, and set apart], who is [exists eternally] and was [existed in the past], because You have brought [judged and executed] these judgments [decisions and punishments]. word study 6 For they have spilled [poured out, shed] the blood of saints [holy ones, set apart] and prophets [messengers of God, spokesmen], and You have given them blood [as a judgment, a punishment] to drink, as they deserve [are worthy, have earned].” word study 7 And I heard the altar [a table for offering sacrifices to God] reply: “Yes [verily, truly], Lord [Master, Ruler] God [the one true deity] Almighty [all-powerful, having absolute control], true [genuine, authentic] and just [fair, righteous] are Your [belonging to You] judgments [divine decisions, verdicts].” word study 8 Then the fourth angel [messenger of God] poured out his bowl [broad, shallow cup] on the sun [source of light and heat], and it was given power [ability to act, authority] to scorch [burn, afflict with heat] the people [human beings, men] with fire [flames, divine judgment]. word study 9 And the people [men, humans] were scorched [severely burned] by intense [great, extreme] heat [a glow, fiery warmth], and they cursed [blasphemed, spoke evil of] the name [character, authority] of God [the one true deity], who had authority [power, control] over these plagues [blows, wounds]; yet they did not repent [change their mind, turn from sin] and give Him glory [honor, praise]. word study 10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl [a broad, shallow cup] on the throne [the seat of power and authority] of the beast [a wild and dangerous animal], and its kingdom [God’s royal power and dominion] was plunged into darkness [to obscure or blind], and men began to gnaw [to chew or gnaw on something] their tongues [the organ of speech] in anguish [from the pain and travail] word study 11 and curse the God [the supreme Ruler] of heaven [the sky and God’s dwelling place] for their [intense] pains [travail, anguish] and sores [open wounds, ulcers]; yet they did not [change their mind, turn away from sin] repent [feel remorse, be sorry] of their [evil] deeds [works, actions]. word study 12 And the sixth angel poured out his bowl [a broad, shallow cup, a vessel for libation] on the great [large, intense, magnificent] river Euphrates [a major river in Asia, a significant geographical location], and its water [liquid] was dried up [to wither, to evaporate] to prepare [to make ready, to get things ready] the way [a road, a path, a journey] for the kings [sovereign rulers, monarchs] of the East [the direction of the rising sun, a new beginning]. word study 13 And I saw [beheld, perceived] three [a specific number, a trio] unclean [impure, morally defiled] spirits [breath, the vital principle] that looked like [resembled, were similar to] frogs [small amphibians, a sign of God’s judgment] coming out of [emerging from, originating from] the mouths [the physical opening, a symbol of speech and communication] of the dragon [a mythical monster], the beast [a wild animal], and the false prophet [a fake messenger, one who claims to speak for God but is actually a deceiver]. word study 14 These are demonic [evil, unclean] spirits [the vital principle or mental disposition of a person] that perform [working miracles, doing signs] signs [indications or tokens of something supernatural] and go out [depart, leave a place] to all the kings [sovereign rulers] of the earth [the inhabited land], to assemble [gather, bring together] them for battle [war or conflict] on the great [big or intense] day [a 24-hour period or a period of time] of God [the one true deity] the Almighty [having absolute power and control over everything]. word study 15 “Behold [see, perceive], I am coming [arriving, approaching] like a thief [stealthily, unexpectedly]. Blessed [happy, supremely fortunate] is the one who remains [stays, continues] awake [watchful, vigilant] and clothed [dressed, robed], so that he will not go [walk, live] naked [without clothes, exposed] and let his shame [indecency, unseemliness] be exposed [seen, revealed].” word study 16 And [also, in addition] they assembled [gathered, brought together] the kings [rulers, leaders] in the place [location, region] that [which] in Hebrew [the Jewish language] is called [named, referred to as] Armageddon [Har-Magedon, the mountain of Megiddo]. word study 17 Then the seventh [last, final] angel poured out his bowl [vessel, container of God’s wrath] into the air [atmosphere, sky], and a loud [great, powerful] voice came from the throne [seat of authority, God’s power] in the temple [sacred place, heavenly sanctuary], saying, “It is done [finished, completed, brought to an end]!” word study 18 And there were flashes of lightning [and voices, and thunders, and lightnings], and rumblings [sounds], and peals of thunder, and a great [such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty] earthquake [a shaking of the ground, a seismic event] the likes of which had not occurred [such as came not] since men [human beings, people] were upon the earth [the land, the material world]—so mighty [so great, thus] was the great [intense, powerful] quake [earthquake, a trembling of the earth]. word study 19 The great [magnificent, powerful] city was split [divided, torn apart] into three parts, and the cities [towns, metropolises] of the nations [Gentiles, non-Jewish people] collapsed [fell, were overthrown]. And God [the Almighty, Creator] remembered [recalled, brought to mind] Babylon the great [the prominent, infamous city] and gave her the cup [vessel] of the wine [fermented drink] of the fury [intense anger, wrath] of His wrath [punishment, divine judgment]. word study 20 Then every [all, each one] island [a body of land surrounded by water] fled [to flee, run away, vanish], and no [not any, none] mountain [a high elevation of land] could be found [discovered, seen, or perceived]. word study 21 And great [enormous, gigantic] hailstones [like talents, weighing about a hundred pounds] weighing almost a hundred pounds [as much as a talent] each rained down on them from above [out of heaven, from the sky]. And men [human beings, people] cursed [blasphemed, spoke evil of] God [the one true deity] for the plague [blow, wound] of hail [a form of precipitation, a sign of God’s power], because it was so [exceedingly, very] horrendous [great, intense]. word study
