1 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] reigns [to advise or counsel, to rule as king]; let the nations [people or nation, a tribe] tremble [to shake or tremble with fear]! He is enthroned [to sit or dwell, to remain] above the cherubim [angelic beings, guardians of God’s throne]; let the earth [the land, the material world] quake [to shake or tremble, like an earthquake]! word study 2 Great [supreme, of utmost importance] is the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in Zion [the city of God, a mountain in Jerusalem]; He is exalted [high, lifted up] above all [every single one, the entirety of] the peoples [nations, people groups]. word study 3 Let them praise Your [great and to be feared] great [in size, age, or importance] and awesome [terrible, inspiring awe] name [fame, renown, reputation]— He [the supreme God, holy and set apart] is holy [set apart, sacred, and reverenced]! word study 4 The mighty [powerful, strong] King [ruler, sovereign] loves [has affection for, is pleased with] justice [judgment, righteousness]. You [as the sovereign God] have established [set up, appointed] equity [uprightness, fairness]; You have exercised [executed, carried out] justice [judgment] and righteousness [virtue, morality] in Jacob [Israel, the chosen people]. word study 5 Exalt [lift up, magnify] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme one], and worship [bow down, show reverence] at His footstool [sacred throne, resting place]; He [the holy One] is holy [set apart, sacred]! word study 6 Moses [the Israelite leader] and Aaron [the first high priest] were among His priests [spiritual leaders, mediators]; Samuel [a judge and prophet] was among those who called [invoked, prayed to] on His name [identity, character, Yehovah]. They called [cried out, invoked] to the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] and He answered [responded, gave an answer]. word study 7 He spoke [to them directly, in a personal encounter] to them from the pillar [a pillar or column] of cloud; they kept [obeyed, protected, and preserved] His decrees [testimonies, divine laws] and the statutes [ordinances, laws given by God] He gave [bestowed, entrusted] them. word study 8 O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme God], You answered [responded to, sang or made music in response to] them. You were a forgiving [merciful, pardoning] God to them, yet an avenger [one who punishes, takes vengeance] of their misdeeds [evil actions, wantonness]. word study 9 Exalt [lift up, magnify] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme God] and worship [bow down, pay homage] at His holy [set apart, sacred] mountain [hill], for [because, since] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme God] is holy [separate, consecrated]. word study
