1 Lord [Adonay, Master and Sovereign], You have been our dwelling place [habitation, refuge, home] through all generations [successive groups of people, periods of time]. word study 2 Before [from the very beginning, in the distant past] the mountains [hills] were born [brought forth, created] or You [as the eternal God] brought forth [formed, created] the earth [land, ground] and the world [the earth and its inhabitants], from everlasting [eternity past] to everlasting [eternity future] You are [exist as, remain] God [the supreme Being, Elohim]. word study 3 You return [turn back, bring to an end] man [human, mankind, enosh] to dust [destruction, a crushed state], saying [commanding, proclaiming], “Return [turn back, come back], O sons [children, descendants] of mortals [men, the man, adam].” word study 4 For [because of this reason] in Your sight [before Your eyes, in Your presence] a thousand [large number, company of] years are but [like, similar to] a day [24-hour period, figurative space of time] that passes [transitions, comes to an end], or [like] a watch [night guard, period of vigil] of the night [time of darkness, adversity]. word study 5 You whisk [sweep away, carry off] them away in their sleep [a state of unconsciousness, like a dream]; they are like the new grass [fresh, green vegetation] of the morning [at dawn, a time of new beginnings]word study 6 in the morning [at the break of day, dawn] it springs up [flourishes, blossoms] new, but by evening [sunset, end of day] it fades [is cut down, withers away] and withers [dries up, becomes barren]. word study 7 For [because of our sins] we are consumed [burned up, used up] by Your anger [intense emotion] and terrified [dismayed, alarmed] by Your wrath [rage, intense anger, fury]. word study 8 You have set [placed, appointed] our iniquities [moral evil, sin] before You [in Your presence, facing You], our secret [hidden, concealed] sins [transgressions, wrongdoing] in the light [illumination, understanding] of Your presence [face, countenance]. word study 9 For [because of, due to] all our days [the entirety of our lifetime] decline [pass away, come to an end] in Your [divine, heavenly] fury [wrath, anger, intense displeasure]; we finish [bring to a close, complete] our years [the span of our life] with a sigh [a moan, a deep breath, a lamentation]. word study 10 The length [duration, span] of our days [a day or period of time] is seventy [the number seventy] years— or eighty if we are strong [bigevarot, in might or power]— yet their pride [arrogance or haughtiness] is but labor [amal, trouble or toil] and sorrow [aven, wickedness or pain], for they quickly [swiftly or hastily] pass, and we fly [naufa, to fly away or faint] away. word study 11 Who [is aware of] knows the power [strength, might] of Your anger [emotions]? Your wrath [fury, outburst of passion] matches [is equal to, corresponds with] the fear [reverence, respect] You are due [deserve, owe]. word study 12 So teach us [guide, instruct] to number [count, weigh the value of] our days [moments, periods of life], that we may present [apply, bring] a heart [mind, will, emotions] of wisdom [prudence, good judgment] [a deep understanding, discernment]. word study 13 Return [come back, turn back], O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]! How long [till when, how much longer] will it be? Have compassion [be sorry, show pity] on Your servants [those who serve, Your people]. word study 14 Satisfy [fill to the full, meet our deepest needs] us in the morning [at the break of day, in the early hours] with Your loving devotion [kindness, mercy, faithful love], that we may sing for joy [shout triumphantly, overcome with praise] and be glad [rejoice, delight] all our days [every moment, throughout our lives]. word study 15 Make us glad [cause us to rejoice, bring us joy] for as many days [in which Thou hast afflicted us] as You have afflicted [humbled, oppressed] us, for as many years [we have experienced troubles, seen evil] as we have seen [looked upon, witnessed] evil [bad, moral harm]. word study 16 May Your [divine, glorious] work [deeds, accomplishments, what You have done] be shown [appear, visible, manifest] to Your servants [those who serve, obey, and worship You], and Your splendor [glory, majesty, beauty] to their children [descendants, offspring, posterity]. word study 17 May the favor [pleasantness, kindness, beauty] of the Lord [Adonay, our sovereign Master] our God [Elohim, the one supreme God] rest upon us; establish [set up, appoint, make firm] for us the work [deed, action, labor] of our hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share]— yes, establish [confirm, stabilize] the work [deed, action, labor] of our hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share]! word study
