1 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said [to speak, communicate, or command] to Moses [the Israelite leader, God’s chosen servant], word study 2 “Make [create, fashion] two trumpets [silver horns, signaling instruments] of hammered [beaten, molded] silver to be used for calling [summoning, gathering] the congregation [assembly, public gathering] and for having [signaling, directing] the camps [encampments, armies] set out [journey, march, depart]. word study 3 When both [the two trumpets] are sounded [to blow, as with a ram’s horn], the whole [entire, all-inclusive] congregation [gathering, assembly] is to assemble [come together, meet] before you [towards you, in your presence] at the entrance [doorway, opening] to the Tent [tabernacle, sacred dwelling] of Meeting [appointed gathering, sacred assembly]. word study 4 But if [only one blast is made, under a single trumpet sound] only one is sounded, then the leaders [princes, heads of the thousands, chief officials], the heads [chiefs, rulers] of the clans [tribes, thousands] of Israel [Jacob’s descendants, God’s chosen people], are to gather [assemble, meet together, come unto] before [toward, in the presence of] you. word study 5 When you sound [blow loudly, with a loud note] short blasts [a shout, an alarm signal], the camps [groups of people, armies] that lie [are encamped, pitched] on the east side [the front, the direction of sunrise] are to set out [start a journey, depart, remove] [to go forward, march out, journey]. word study 6 When you sound [blow, strike] the short blasts [shouts, alarm] a second [again, another] time, the camps [army, group of people] that lie on the south [southern direction, southward] side are to set out [start a journey, depart]. The blasts [shouts, loud noises] are to signal [indicate, notify] them to set out [begin their journey, move forward]. word study 7 To convene [gather, assemble] the assembly [congregation, group of people], you are to sound [blow, strike] long blasts [normally, not loudly], not [excluding] short ones [an alarm, a shout]. word study 8 The sons [descendants, offspring] of Aaron [the first high priest], the priests [spiritual leaders, mediators], are to sound [blow, strike] the trumpets [ram’s horns, signal instruments]. This shall be a permanent [lasting, eternal] statute [ordinance, divine law] for you and the generations [periods of time, successive groups] to come [throughout your history, forever]. word study 9 When you enter into battle [go to war, engage in combat] in your land [territory, country] against an adversary [enemy, oppressor] who attacks [afflicts, distresses] you, sound short blasts [blow an alarm, shout] on the trumpets [ram’s horns, signal instruments], and you will be remembered [recalled, brought to mind] before the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] your God [Elohim, the supreme ruler] and saved [delivered, rescued] from your enemies [adversaries, those who hate you]. word study 10 And on your joyous occasions [times of gladness, festivals], your appointed feasts [set times, solemn assemblies], and the beginning [new moon] of each month, you are to blow the trumpets [with a loud, quavering note] over your burnt offerings [sacrifices completely consumed by fire] and fellowship offerings [peace offerings, sacrifices of thanksgiving] to serve as a reminder [memorial, remembrance] for you before your God [Elohim, the supreme Lord]. I am the LORD [Yehovah] your God [the one true God, your Redeemer].” word study 11 On the twentieth [twentieth day of the month] day of the second [again] month of the second [a new beginning, year of renewal] year, the cloud was lifted [taken up, rose] from above [upon, over] the tabernacle [a special tent, dwelling place] of the Testimony [a witness, God’s laws], word study 12 and the [sons of, descendants of] Israelites set out [traveled, journeyed, departed] from the Wilderness [desert, open field] of Sinai [a mountain where Moses received the Law], traveling [on their journeys] from place to place until the cloud settled [rested, dwelt, abode] in the Wilderness [desert, open field] of Paran [a desert area in Arabia]. word study 13 They set out [began their journey, first took their journey] this first time according to the LORD’s [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] command [instruction, direction] through [by the hand of, under the leadership of] Moses [the Israelite leader, prophet]. word study 14 First [in the lead, at the forefront], the divisions [tribal groups, armies] of the camp [encampment, gathering] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah] set out [journeyed, departed] under their standard [flag, banner], with Nahshon [the son of Amminadab] son of Amminadab [my kinsman is noble] in command [as leader, in charge]. word study 15 Nethanel [given of God, a leader] son [descendant, heir] of Zuar [an Israelite father] was over [in charge of, commanding] the division [army, host, tribe] of the tribe [family, nation] of Issachar [there is recompense, a son of Jacob], word study 16 and Eliab [a leader] son of Helon [father of a leader] was over [in charge of, commanding] the division [army, host] of the tribe [family, nation] of Zebulun [a son of Jacob, a tribe of Israel]. word study 17 Then the tabernacle [sacred tent, dwelling place of God] was taken down [dismantled, lowered], and the Gershonites [descendants of Gershon, a son of Levi] and the Merarites [sons of Merari, a Levite family] set out [began their journey, departed], transporting [bearing, carrying] it [the tabernacle, God’s portable sanctuary]. word study 18 Then the divisions [companies, groups] of the camp [army, encampment] of Reuben [the firstborn son of Jacob] set out [to journey, to depart] under their standard [flag, banner], with Elizur [a leader of the Reuben tribe] son of Shedeur [the father of Elizur, meaning darter of light] in command [as leader, in charge]. word study 19 Shelumiel [the peaceful one, having peace of God] son [descendant, offspring] of Zurishaddai [my rock is the Almighty, God is my rock] was over [in charge of, leader of] the division [army, host, tribe] of the tribe [family, clan, nation] of Simeon [heard, listening, one who hears], word study 20 and Eliasaph [the son of God, having God’s nature] son of Deuel [Reuel, they know God] was over [in charge of, leading] the division [host, army, tribe] of the tribe [family group] of Gad [the seventh son of Jacob, a tribe of Israel]. word study 21 Then the Kohathites [descendants of Kohath, a Levitical family] set out [to journey, to remove], transporting [bearing, carrying] the holy objects [sacred items, sanctuary]; the tabernacle [a special tent, the dwelling place of God] was to be set up [raised, erected] before their arrival [coming, until they came]. word study 22 Next, the divisions [companies, troops] of the camp [army, encampment] of Ephraim [doubly fruitful, referring to Joseph’s son and the tribe that descended from him] set out [journeyed, departed] under their standard [flag, banner], with Elishama [my God has heard, a man from the tribe of Judah] son [descendant, offspring] of Ammihud [my kinsman is majesty] in command [as leader, over his host]. word study 23 Gamaliel [a leader, the son of Pedahzur] son [a descendant, a child] of Pedahzur [the Rock has ransomed] was over [in charge of, commanding] the division [army, host, or tribe] of the tribe [a group of people, a nation] of Manasseh [a grandson of Jacob, an ancestor of a large tribe], word study 24 and Abidan [son of the judge, my father is judge] son of Gideoni [father of Abidan, a ruler] was over [in charge of, leader of] the division [army, host, tribal group] of the tribe [family, nation, descendants] of Benjamin [son of the right hand, youngest son of Jacob]. word study 25 Finally, the divisions [rear guard, last ones] of the camp [army, group of people] of Dan [a son of Jacob, the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel] set out [journeyed, moved forward] under their standard [flag, identifying symbol], serving as the rear guard [last line of defense, protector] for all units [armies, large groups], with Ahiezer [my brother is help, a Danite chief] son of Ammishaddai [my kinsman is Almighty, the father of Ahiezer] in command [leadership, authority]. word study 26 Pagiel [son and leader] son of Ocran [father and ancestor] was over [in charge of, commanding] the division [army, host, or tribe] of the tribe [family, or nation] of Asher [eighth son of Jacob, and one of the twelve tribes of Israel], word study 27 and Ahira [a leader, the son of Enan] son of Enan [having eyes, a prince] was over [in charge of, commanding] the division [army, host] of the tribe [family, nation] of Naphtali [one of the twelve tribes of Israel]. word study 28 This was the order [sequence, arrangement] of march [journey, travels] for the Israelite [sons of Israel, descendants of Jacob] divisions [armies, hosts] as they set out [moved forward, departed]. word study 29 Then Moses [the Israelite leader, a servant of God] said to Hobab, the son of Moses’ father-in-law Reuel [also known as Jethro, a wise and spiritual guide] the Midianite, “We are setting out [journeying, traveling] for the place [a location, a promised land] of which the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said: ‘I will give [bestow, provide] it to you.’ Come with us [accompany us, join our company], and we will treat you well [do you good, show you kindness], for the LORD [the sovereign God] has promised [spoken, declared] good things [blessings, prosperity] to Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people].” word study 30 “I will not go [refuse to proceed],” Hobab replied [said in response]. “Instead [on the contrary], I am going back [returning, departing] to my own land [native country, territory] and my own people [relatives, family, kindred].” word study 31 “Please [I pray thee, we beg of you] do not leave us [abandon or forsake us],” Moses said, “since you know [are aware of, have knowledge of] where we should camp [set up our tents, encamp] in the wilderness [the desert, a barren land], and you can serve as our eyes [be our guide, show us the way]. word study 32 If you come [go, walk] with us, we will share [give a part, do the same] with you whatever [all, every] good things [goodness, welfare, pleasant things] the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] gives [does, blesses] us [to us, unto us].” word study 33 So they set out [began their journey, departed] on a three-day [a period of seventy-two hours, three times twenty-four hours] journey from the mountain [hill] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], with the ark [box, chest, container] of the covenant [promise, agreement, treaty] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] traveling ahead of them [going before, leading the way] for those three days [a short period, three times twenty-four hours] to seek [search, explore, find] a resting place [state of quietness, peaceful home, haven] for them [the people, the Israelites]. word study 34 And the cloud of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] was over [above, watching over] them by day [daily, in the daytime] when they set out [began their journey, departed] from the camp [the Israelites’ encampment, a group of people]. word study 35 Whenever the ark [a box or chest] set out, Moses would say, “Rise up [stand up, ascend], O LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of hosts]! May Your enemies [those who hate You, adversaries] be scattered [dispersed, shattered]; may those who hate [are hostile towards] You flee [run away, escape] before You [from Your presence, face].” word study 36 And when it came to rest [settled down, remained in one place], he would say: “Return [turn back, come back to], O LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel], to the countless [myriad, ten] thousands [large number, company of] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people].” word study
