1 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said [to speak, communicate, or command] to Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed], word study 2 “If someone sins [commits a trespass, acts unfaithfully] and acts unfaithfully [deals falsely, is untrue] against the LORD [the supreme God, Yehovah] by deceiving [lying to, cheating] his neighbor [fellow, brother] in regard to a deposit [something entrusted, a pledge] or security [a guarantee, a promise] entrusted to him [given into his care, committed to him] or stolen [taken by force, robbed], or if he extorts [oppresses, takes advantage of] his neighbor word study 3 or finds [comes across, discovers] lost property [something that has been misplaced, an article of value] and lies [deceives, withholds the truth] about it and swears [makes a false oath, vows falsely] falsely, or if he commits [perpetrates, is guilty of] any such sin [transgression, wrongdoing] that a man might commit [do, perform]word study 4 once he has sinned [and becomes morally guilty] and becomes guilty [accountable to God], he must return what he has stolen [taken by robbery or deceit] or taken by extortion [gotten by oppression or violence], or the deposit [a trust or pledge] entrusted to him, or the lost property [something found by chance] he found [discovered or came upon], word study 5 or anything else [about which he took a false oath, or anything he lied about] about which he has sworn falsely [with a false oath, or dishonestly]. He must make restitution [pay back, restore] in full, add a fifth [one-fifth] of the value, and pay it to the owner [to whom it belongs, the rightful owner] on the day he acknowledges [recognizes, admits] his guilt [sin, wrongdoing]. word study 6 Then he must bring to the priest his guilt offering [trespass offering, sin compensation] to the LORD: an unblemished [without blemish, perfect] ram [male sheep] of proper value [according to your estimation, of great worth] from the flock [community, congregation]. word study 7 In this way [through this ritual, by this means] the priest [Aaron’s descendant, a mediator] will make atonement [reconciliation, restoration] for him before [in the presence of, facing] the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], and he will be forgiven [pardoned, released from guilt] for anything [all things, every matter] he may have done [committed, trespassed] to incur guilt [become liable, deserve punishment].” word study 8 Then the LORD [Yehovah] said [spoke, commanded] to Moses [the leader, prophet], word study 9 “Command Aaron [the first high priest, brother of Moses] and his sons that this is the law [regulation, instruction] of the burnt offering [a sacrifice completely consumed by fire]: The burnt offering [a gift totally dedicated to God] is to remain [stay, be left] on the hearth [the fireplace, the burning area] of the altar [the table for sacrifices, the place of atonement] all night, until morning, and the fire [the means of purification] must be kept burning [continually, without ceasing] on the altar. word study 10 And the priest [the spiritual leader, mediator] shall put on his linen robe and linen undergarments, and he shall remove from the altar [the place of sacrifice, atonement] the ashes [remains, residue] of the burnt offering [a gift totally consumed by fire, expressing complete devotion] that the fire has consumed and place them beside [near, adjacent to] it. word study 11 Then he must take off his garments [and change into other clothes], put on other clothes [suitable for a clean place], and carry the ashes [the remains of the burnt offering] outside the camp to a ceremonially clean place [a location purified by ritual, where God’s presence can dwell]. word study 12 The fire [burning continually, never quenched] on the altar shall be kept burning [fed constantly]; it must not be extinguished [put out, quenched]. Every morning the priest is to add wood [fuel, firewood] to the fire, arrange the burnt offering [sacrifice, gift] on it, and burn the fat portions [richest parts, choicest pieces] of the peace offerings [gifts, fellowship sacrifices] on it. word study 13 The fire [ever burning, perpetual flame] shall be kept burning [continually, never ceasing] on the altar [place of sacrifice] continually [at all times, day and night]; it must not be extinguished [put out, quenched, stopped]. word study 14 Now this is the law [regulation, instruction] of the grain offering [meal offering, gift of fine flour]: Aaron’s sons [priests, spiritual leaders] shall present [offer, bring near] it before the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] in front of [before, in the presence of] the altar [place of sacrifice, worship]. word study 15 The priest [set apart for God’s service] is to remove a handful [a portion] of fine flour [the best, purest flour] and olive oil, together with all the frankincense [a sweet, fragrant incense] from the grain offering [a gift of thanksgiving], and burn the memorial portion [a reminder of the offering] on the altar [a place of sacrifice] as a pleasing aroma [a sweet, acceptable smell] to the LORD [Yehovah, the eternal God]. word study 16 Aaron [the high priest] and his sons [as priests, having God’s authority] are to eat [consume, devour] the remainder [what is left, the residual part]. It must be eaten [to be consumed, without being wasted] without leaven [unleavened, free from corruption] in a holy place [a sacred, set-apart location]; they are to eat it in the courtyard [the outer court, the open space] of the Tent of Meeting [the tabernacle, the place of divine presence]. word study 17 It must not be baked [without yeast, unleavened] with leaven; I have assigned [given, apportioned] it as their portion [share, allotment] of My offerings [sacrifices, gifts] made by fire [burnt offerings, sacred flames]. It is most holy [extremely sacred, set apart], like the sin offering [atonement, purification] and the guilt offering [reparation, restitution]. word study 18 Any male [descendant, son] among the sons of Aaron [the first high priest, brother of Moses] may eat it [as a privilege, a right]. This is a permanent [everlasting, eternal] portion [share, inheritance] from the offerings [sacrifices, gifts] made by fire [burnt offerings] to the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] for the generations [descendants, posterity] to come. Anything that touches [comes into contact with, is associated with] them will become holy [set apart, consecrated, sanctified].” word study 19 Then the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] said [spoke, commanded] to Moses [the leader, prophet], word study 20 “This is the offering [a gift, a sacrifice] that Aaron and his sons must present [bring near, offer] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] on the day he is anointed [set apart, consecrated]: a tenth of an ephah [a unit of measurement, about two quarts] of fine flour [choice, pure wheat] as a regular [perpetual, ongoing] grain offering [a gift of thanksgiving], half of it in the morning [at dawn, when the day begins] and half in the evening [at sunset, when the day ends]. word study 21 It shall be prepared [with olive oil, in a frying pan] with oil on a griddle [baking pan, flat plate]; you are to bring it well-kneaded [mixed, soaked] and present it as a grain offering [meal offering, meat offering] broken in pieces [shattered, ruptured], a pleasing aroma [sweet savor, fragrance] to the LORD [Yehovah, the Supreme God]. word study 22 The priest [anointed to serve, a spiritual leader], who is one of Aaron’s sons [a descendant, a male heir] and will be anointed [set apart, consecrated] to take his place [succeed, replace], is to prepare [offer, present] it. As a permanent [lasting, eternal] portion [share, allotment] for the LORD [Yehovah, the Almighty], it must be burned [completely consumed, utterly destroyed] completely [totally, entirely]. word study 23 Every [wholly, completely] grain offering [meal offering, gift of fine flour] for a priest [one who mediates between God and man] shall be burned [consumed with fire, wholly burnt] completely [totally, without remainder]; it is not [never, under no circumstances] to be eaten [devoured, consumed as food].” word study 25 “Tell Aaron and his sons that this is the law [regulation, command] of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered [killed, sacrificed], the sin offering shall be slaughtered [killed, put to death] before the LORD; it is most holy [sacred, set apart]. word study 26 The priest [the one who offers, who makes atonement] who offers it shall eat it; it must be eaten [consumed, taken] in a holy place [sanctified area, sacred location], in the courtyard [court, open space] of the Tent of Meeting [tabernacle, dwelling place]. word study 27 Anything that touches [comes against, makes contact with] its flesh will become holy [set apart, consecrated], and if any of the blood is spattered [sprinkled, dropped] on a garment, you must wash [cleanse, purify] it in a holy place [sanctified location, designated area]. word study 28 The clay pot [earthen vessel, pottery] in which the sin offering is boiled must be broken; if it is boiled in a bronze pot [brass vessel, metal container], the pot must be scoured [rubbed clean, thoroughly cleaned] and rinsed [washed out, cleansed] with water. word study 29 Any male [man, person] among the priests [Levites] may eat [partake, consume] it; it is most holy [sacred, set apart]. word study 30 But no sin offering [sacrifice for sin] may be eaten if its blood has been brought [taken, presented] into the Tent of Meeting [tabernacle, dwelling place] to make atonement [reconcile, cover] in the Holy Place [sanctuary, sacred area]; it must be burned [consumed, incinerated]. word study
