Job 39
BSA1 “Do you know [have knowledge of, understand] when mountain goats [wild goats of the rock, ibex] give birth [beget, bring forth young]? Have you watched [observed, marked] the doe [female deer, gentle one] bear [give birth to, calve] her fawn [young one, offspring]? word study 2 Can you count [number, keep track of] the months [lunar cycles, periods of gestation] they are pregnant [fulfill, complete their term]? Do you know [have knowledge of, understand] the time [season, occasion] they give birth [beget, bring forth their young]? word study 3 They crouch down [bow themselves, sink down in reverence] and bring forth [bear, deliver] their young [offspring, children]; they deliver [cast out, send forth] their newborn [young ones, infants] [with ease, safely]. word study 4 Their young ones [are strong] thrive and grow up [become strong, are weaned] in the open field [countryside, grain field]; they leave [go forth] and do not return [come back, turn back]. word study 5 Who [the one responsible] set the wild donkey [a strong and fierce animal, onager] free [exempt from slavery, unrestrained]? Who [the one with authority] released the swift donkey [wild ass, loud-voiced beast] from the harness [bonds, rope or halter]? word study 6 I made the wilderness [barren land, desert] his home [dwelling place, house] and the salt flats [salt land, barren area] his dwelling [place to live, tabernacle]. word study 7 He scorns [laughs in contempt, mocks] the tumult [crowd, noisy multitude] of the city [town, urban area] and never hears [listens to, pays attention to] the shouts [loud cries, clamor] of a driver [one who oppresses, exacts]. word study 8 He roams [ranges freely, searches out] the mountains [hills, high places] for pasture [grazing land, feeding ground], searching [seeking diligently, looking carefully] for any [all kinds of, every] green thing [herb, lush vegetation, plant life]. word study 9 Will the wild ox [aurochs, unicorn] consent [be willing, agree] to serve [work for, be in bondage to] you? Will he stay [lodge, abide] by your manger [crib, feeding trough] at night? word study 10 Can you hold [tie or bind, with a harness] him [the wild ox, aurochs] to the furrow [a ridge or bank in the land] with a [thick, sturdy] harness? Will he plow [harrow, break up clods] the valleys [lowland areas, like the Valley of Elah] behind you [after you, in your footsteps]? word study 11 Can you rely [trust, have confidence] on his great [abundant, mighty] strength [power, might]? Will you leave [abandon, relinquish] your hard work [labor, toil] to him [entrust it to his care]? word study 12 Can you trust [have faith in, be faithful to] him to bring in your grain [seed, offspring] and gather [collect, assemble] it to your threshing floor [barn, place of separation]? word study 13 The wings [of the rattling ones, proudly waving] of the ostrich [a bird known for its loud cry] flap joyfully [to rejoice, leaping for joy], but cannot match [are not comparable to] the pinions [bird’s wing or feather] and feathers [plumage, collective feathers] of the stork. word study 14 For [because of this reason] she leaves [abandons, forsakes] her eggs [young ones, offspring] on the ground [earth, land] and lets [allows, permits] them warm [to be heated, nourished] in the sand [dust, dry earth]. word study 15 She forgets [is oblivious to the fact] that a foot [human step, oppressive force] may crush [press, trample] them, or a wild animal [beast of the field, untamed creature] may trample [tread, overpower] them. word study 16 She treats [deals harshly with, is hardened against] her young [offspring, sons] harshly, as if [as though] not her own [hers], with no concern [without fear, dread] that her labor [toil, hard work] was in vain [empty, worthless, without purpose]. word study 17 For [because of a divine reason] God [Eloah, the one true deity] has deprived [caused to forget, withheld from] her of wisdom [skill, prudence, or good judgment]; He has not [neither has He] endowed [given a portion, imparted] her with understanding [discernment, knowledge, or insight]. word study 18 Yet when she proudly [with confidence] spreads her wings [on high, to a great height], she [scornfully, in contempt] laughs [to laugh, often in derision] at the horse [swallow, a type of bird or a chariot horse] and its rider [the one who sits upon, to ride an animal]. word study 19 Do you give [to bestow or impart] strength [might, power, or ability] to the horse [swallow] or adorn [to clothe or wrap around] his neck with a mane [a flowing, quivering, or vibrating growth]? word study 20 Do you make him leap like a locust [like a grasshopper, rapidly multiplying], striking [inspiring, causing] terror [fear, dread] with his proud [majestic, glorious] snorting [loud-sounding breath, a sound of strength]? word study 21 He paws [digging into the ground, stamping with joy] in the valley [a lowland area, a place of humility] and rejoices [feeling joyful, cheerful] in his strength [power, might]; he charges [goes out to meet, rushes forward] into battle [to meet the armed men, with weapons and armor]. word study 22 He laughs [mocks, scornfully ridicules] at fear [dread, terror], frightened [not affrighted, undaunted] of nothing [no thing, any situation]; he does not [will not, refuses to] turn back [retreat, withdraw] from the sword [the face of the sword, battle]. word study 23 A quiver [container for holding arrows, as used by warriors] rattles [to rattle or whiz, making a loud noise] at his side, along with a flashing [glittering, shining] spear [a thrusting weapon, like a lance] and lance [javelin, a throwing spear]. word study 24 Trembling [with fierce passion, quaking] with excitement, he devours [swallows, absorbs] the distance [ground, land]; he cannot stand still [remain steadfast, be faithful] when the ram’s horn [trumpet] sounds [blows, voices its call]. word study 25 At the blast [sound, call] of the horn [trumpet], he snorts [neighs, cries out] with fervor [excitement, eagerness]. He catches [smells, perceives] the scent [smell, aroma] of battle [war, conflict] from afar [at a distance, far off]— the shouts [cries, thunder] of captains [rulers, leaders] and the cry [shout, noise] of war [battle, fighting]. word study 26 Does the hawk [falcon, bird of prey] take flight [soar, spread its wings] by your understanding [wisdom, discernment] and spread [stretch, scatter] his wings [the edge or extremity of something] toward the south [southern direction, wind]? word study 27 Does the eagle [a large bird of prey] soar [mount up, fly high] at your command [by your authority, at your bidding] and make his nest [a place of rest, a dwelling] on high [in lofty heights, above everything]? word study 28 He dwells [to live or stay in a place, inhabits] on a cliff [a craggy rock or cliff, a strong and secure place] and lodges [to grumble or complain, or to rest] there; his stronghold [a fortress, like a castle] is on a rocky crag [a sharp cliff, upon the point of the cliff]. word study 29 From [that location, thence] there he [carefully, with diligence] spies out [seeks, searches for] food [prey, sustenance]; his eyes [sight, vision] see [behold, gaze upon] it from [a distant place, afar off] afar. word study 30 His young ones [baby birds, eaglets] feast on blood [the liquid that flows through the body]; and where the slain [killed, profaned, or hurt ones] are, there he is.” word study
