1 In the year [of significant change, a period of time] that King [a ruler, monarch] Uzziah [my strength is Jehovah] died, I saw [beheld, perceived with my eyes] the Lord [Adonay, a title of reverence] seated [sitting, dwelling] on a throne [a seat of power, authority], high [exalted, lifted up] and exalted [elevated, lifted up]; and the train [hem, lower part] of His robe [a long, flowing garment] filled [to make full, complete] the temple [a large public building, a sacred place]. word study 2 Above Him stood seraphim [heavenly beings, majestic creatures], each having six wings: With two [a pair, a dual unit] wings they covered [hid, concealed] their faces [presences, countenances], with two they covered [concealed, protected] their feet [steps, movements], and with two they were flying [soaring, ascending, in swift motion]. word study 3 And they were calling out [in loud voices, crying] to one another: “Holy [set apart, sacred], holy, holy [completely holy, having God’s nature] is the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] of Hosts [armies, heavenly forces]; all [everything, the whole] the earth [land, creation] is full [completely filled, overflowing] of His glory [great honor, divine splendor].” word study 4 At the sound [voice, cry] of their voices [the seraphim’s call] the doorposts [foundations of the thresholds, lintels] and thresholds [basin, gate] shook [moved, trembled], and the temple [house, place of worship] was filled [made full, completed] with smoke [cloud, vapor]. word study 5 Then I said: “Woe [alas, oh no] is me, for I am ruined [undone, destroyed], because I am a man [a mortal, a human being] of unclean [impure, sinful] lips dwelling among a people of unclean [impure, sinful] lips; for my eyes [my spiritual vision] have seen the King [the Sovereign Ruler], the LORD [Yehovah] of Hosts [armies, heavenly forces].” word study 6 Then one [a single, unique] of the seraphim [heavenly, six-winged beings] flew [swiftly, as if fainting] to me, and in his hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] was a glowing coal [live, burning stone, hot coal] that he had taken [gotten, received] with tongs [a tool for handling hot items, snuffers] from the altar [a place of sacrifice, where offerings are made]. word study 7 And with it he touched [laid, struck against] my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched [come into contact with] your lips [the edge of your mouth, your language], your iniquity [moral evil, sin] is removed [taken away, turned aside] and your sin [guilt, punishment for sin] is atoned for [covered, forgiven, purged].” word study 8 Then I heard [with attention and obedience] the voice [sound or utterance] of the Lord [Adonay, a title of reverence] saying: “Whom shall I send [dispatch or commission]? Who will go [walk or proceed] for Us [on our behalf]?” And I said: “Here am I [look, I am present]. Send me [dispatch or commission me]!” word study 9 And He replied: “Go [to walk, to live] and tell this people [the nation, a group of individuals], ‘Be ever hearing [to listen, to obey], but never understanding [to discern, to know]; be ever seeing [to perceive, to behold], but never perceiving [to know, to ascertain].’ word study 10 Make the hearts [fat, insensitive, or hardened] of this people [nation, or group] calloused [numb, or unresponsive]; deafen [make heavy, or unhearing] their ears [the ability to hear, or listen] and close [shut, or dazzle] their eyes [the source of vision, or understanding]. Otherwise [lest, or beware that] they might see [perceive, or understand] with their eyes [the source of vision, or insight], hear [listen, or comprehend] with their ears [the ability to hear, or discern], understand [discern, or know] with their hearts [the innermost part, including mind, will, and emotions], and turn [return, or repent] and be healed [restored, or made whole]. ” word study 11 Then I asked: “How long [until when, for what duration], O Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master]?” And He replied: “Until the cities [towns, populated areas] lie ruined [wasted, desolate] and without inhabitant [unpeopled, empty], until the houses [dwellings, homes] are left unoccupied [abandoned, empty] and the land [earth, ground] is desolate [devastated, laid waste] and ravaged [crashed, utterly destroyed], word study 12 until the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] has driven men [the people, humanity] far away [to a great distance, into exile] and the land [the earth, the territory] is utterly [completely, totally] forsaken [abandoned, left desolate, in a state of desolation]. word study 13 And though a tenth [one tenth part, a small remnant] remains in the land, it will be burned [consumed by fire, destroyed] again. As the terebinth [a type of tree] and oak [a strong and durable tree] leave stumps [a remaining base, a foundation] when felled [cut down, fallen], so the holy [set apart, sacred] seed [offspring, descendants] will be a stump [a remaining base, a foundation] in the land [the earth, the promised land].” word study
