1 This is the message [word, vision, or prophecy] that was revealed [seen, perceived, or given] to Isaiah [Jeshaiah, Jehovah has saved] son [descendant] of Amoz concerning [about, regarding, or on the subject of] Judah [the tribe or region] and Jerusalem [the city of peace]: word study 2 In the [latter] last days the mountain [hill] of the house [dwelling place, temple] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] will be established [set up, appointed] as the chief [head, prince] of the mountains; it will be raised [lifted, exalted] above the hills [small hills], and all [every, entire] nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] will stream [flow, assemble] to it [toward, in the direction of]. word study 3 And many [numerous, a multitude of] peoples [nations, Gentiles] will come and say: “Come, let us go up [ascend, rise] to the mountain [hill, elevated place] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], to the house [dwelling place, temple] of the God [Elohim, the supreme Deity] of Jacob [the patriarch, Israel’s father]. He will teach [guide, instruct] us His ways [paths, manner of life] so that we may walk [follow, live] in His paths [roads, journey].” For the law [instruction, Torah] will go forth [come out, proceed] from Zion [the city of God, Jerusalem’s hill], and the word [message, decree] of the LORD [Yehovah, the sovereign God] from Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital]. word study 4 Then He will judge [vindicate, govern] between the nations [Gentiles, large groups of people] and arbitrate [decide, settle disputes] for many [numerous, multitudes of] peoples. They will beat their swords [cutting instruments, knives] into plowshares [farming tools, for digging] and their spears [lances, thrusting poles] into pruning hooks [pruning knives, for trimming]. Nation will no longer [not ever again] take up the sword [weapon, for fighting] against nation, nor train [learn, instruct] anymore for war [battle, conflict]. word study 5 Come, O house [dwelling place, family] of Jacob [the son of Isaac and Rebekah], let us walk [live, journey] in the light [natural and spiritual illumination, happiness] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God, the supreme Being]. word study 6 For [because of this reason] You have abandoned [left, forsaken, given up on] Your people [nation, family], the house [family, household] of Jacob [a key figure in Israel’s history], because [since, as a result] they are filled [replenished, made full] with influences [customs, practices] from the east [the front, a direction]; they are soothsayers [sorcerers, practicing divination] like the Philistines [a neighboring nation, foreigners]; they strike hands [make agreements, please themselves] with the children [youth, young ones] of foreigners [strangers, unfamiliar people]. word study 7 Their land [country, territory] is full of silver [wealth, riches] and gold [precious treasure], with no limit [end, boundary] to their treasures [storehouses, riches]; their land [earth, ground] is full of horses [chariot horses, swift steeds], with no limit [end, boundary] to their chariots [vehicles, carriages]. word study 8 Their land [country, territory] is full [completely filled, abundant] of idols [worthless things, false gods]; they bow down [worship, prostrate themselves] to the work [deeds, actions] of their hands [strength, power], to what [that which] their fingers [hands, grasp] have made [created, fashioned]. word study 9 So mankind [including every person, the mean man] is brought low [humbled, bowed down], and man [the great man, humanity] is humbled [abased, lowered]— do not [in no way, therefore] forgive them [spare them not, accept them not]! word study 10 Go [enter, come] into the rocks [rock cliffs, boulders] and hide [conceal, bury] in the dust [dry earth, clay] from the terror [dread, fear] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] and the splendor [glory, majesty] of His majesty [excellence, pride]. word study 11 The proud [lofty, haughty] look of man [humanity, Adam’s descendants] will be humbled [brought low, abased], and the loftiness [height, haughtiness] of men [mankind, individuals] brought low [humbled, bowed down]; the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] alone [separately, uniquely] will be exalted [lifted high, elevated] in that day [period of time, era]. word study 12 For the Day [a time of reckoning, a period of judgment] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [armies, a large group of people or things] will come against all the proud [arrogant, lofty, having a lofty attitude] and lofty [exalted, lifted up], against all that is exalted [lifted up, high]— it will be humbled [brought low, abased, lowered in pride]word study 13 against all [every single one] the cedars [strong and durable trees] of Lebanon [a mountain range in Israel, known for its white snow or limestone peaks], lofty [exalted, lifted up] and lifted up [elevated, raised high], against all [every single one] the oaks of Bashan [a fertile region east of the Jordan River], word study 14 against all [every single one] the tall [high, lofty] mountains [hills], against all [every] the high [exalted, lifted up] hills [small hills], word study 15 against every [lofty, elevated] high tower [a tall structure or elevated stage], against every [fenced, strong] fortified wall [a wall of protection, providing safety and security], word study 16 against every [stately, commercial] ship of Tarshish [a merchant vessel, a place on the Mediterranean], and against every [pleasant, desirable] stately [beautiful, luxurious] vessel [image, picture]. word study 17 So the pride [haughtiness, arrogance] of man [the first human, Adam] will be brought low [humbled, abased], and the loftiness [height, haughtiness] of men [mankind, individuals] will be humbled [bowed down, made low]; the LORD [Yehovah, the Supreme God] alone [separate, apart] will be exalted [lifted up, elevated] in that day [a specific time, a period of judgment], word study 18 and the idols [false gods, worthless objects] will vanish [completely disappear, utterly pass away] completely [entirely, to the point of non-existence]. word study 19 Men will flee to caves [natural rock shelters, dens] in the rocks [boulders, cliff faces] and holes [underground caverns, excavated spaces] in the ground, away from the terror [dread, fear] of the LORD [Yehovah, the sovereign God] and from the splendor [glory, majestic power] of His majesty [excellence, greatness], when He rises [stands up, ascends] to shake [tremble, terrify] the earth [land, ground]. word study 20 In that day [a future time of judgment] men will cast away [reject, abandon] to the moles [burrowing animals, rats] and bats [flying creatures of the night] their idols [false gods, worthless objects] of silver [valuable metal, wealth] and gold [precious treasure]— the idols [images, statues] they made [created, fashioned] to worship [bow down, reverence]. word study 21 They will flee to caverns [clefts, holes] in the rocks [boulders, stones] and crevices [clefts, cracks] in the cliffs [craggy rocks, rugged hills], away from the terror [dread, fear] of the LORD [Yehovah] and from the splendor [glory, majesty] of His majesty [excellence, pride], when He rises [stands up, ascends] to shake [tremble, terrify] the earth [land, ground]. word study 22 Put no more trust [stop having confidence, cease] in man [human beings, the Adam], who has only the breath [a mere spirit] in his nostrils [face, the front of his being]. Of what account [what value, wherein] is he [this mortal, the individual]? word study
