Hosea 1

1 This is the word [message from God, divine utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] that came to Hosea [Hoshea, a prophet of God] son of Beeri [my well, a father of a prophet] in the days [period of time, era] of Uzziah [my strength is Jehovah], Jotham [Jehovah is perfect], Ahaz [he has grasped], and Hezekiah [Jehovah is my strength], kings [rulers, monarchs] of Judah [praise, a tribe of Israel], and of Jeroboam [the people will contend] son of Jehoash [given by the Lord], king [ruler, monarch] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, his descendants]. word study 2 When the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] first spoke [communicated, gave a message] through Hosea, He told him, “Go, take a prostitute [a woman of fornications, an adulteress] as your wife and have children of adultery [youth born out of wedlock, a result of unfaithfulness], because this land [the earth, the territory of Israel] is flagrantly prostituting [committing great whoredom, being utterly unfaithful] itself by departing [turning away, forsaking] from the LORD [the supreme God, the one true Lord].” word study 3 So Hosea went [to walk, to live] and married [took as his wife] Gomer [complete, the name of a woman] daughter [a female child, a woman] of Diblaim [a man whose name means ’two cakes’], and she conceived [to become pregnant, to bear] and bore [to give birth, to beget] him a son [a male child, a descendant]. word study 4 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to Hosea, “Name him Jezreel [God sows, a city in Issachar], for soon [after a little time, in a short while] I will bring the bloodshed [punishment for the blood, avenge the blood] of Jezreel upon the house [dynasty, family] of Jehu, and I will put an end [cause to cease, bring to an end] to the kingdom [dominion, rule] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people]. word study 5 And on that day [at that specific time, in the future] I will break [shatter, destroy completely] the bow [an archer’s weapon] of Israel [God’s chosen people, descendants of Jacob] in the Valley [lowland area, region of spiritual significance] of Jezreel [God sows, place of nurture and growth].” word study 6 Gomer again conceived [became pregnant, was with child] and gave birth [brought forth, delivered] to a daughter, and the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] said to Hosea, “Name her Lo-ruhamah [No Mercy, not loved], for I will no longer [not again, not anymore] have compassion [show mercy, pity] on the house of Israel [the people of God, the nation], that I should ever [in any way, at all] forgive [pardon, show love to] them. word study 7 Yet I will have [show, demonstrate] compassion [mercy, pity, love] on the house [family, tribe, dwelling place] of Judah, and I will save [rescue, deliver] them—not by bow [weapon, instrument of war] or sword [cutting instrument, tool of battle] or war [conflict, battle], not by horses [chariot horses, cavalry] and cavalry [horsemen, riders], but by the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] their God [Elohim, the one true God].” word study 8 After she had [completed the process of] weaned Lo-ruhamah [No Mercy], Gomer conceived [became pregnant, received life] and gave birth [brought forth, delivered] to a son [a male child, descendant]. word study 9 And the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] said, “Name him Lo-ammi [Not My People], for you [as a nation] are not My people [Amaw, a chosen nation], and I [the speaker, God Himself] am not your God [the one who cares for and protects you]. word study 10 Yet the number of the Israelites [children of Israel, sons of Israel] will be like the sand of the sea [shore, seashore], which cannot be measured [counted, quantified] or counted. And it will happen [come to pass, occur] that in the very place [location, area] where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people [My children],’ they will be called [named, referred to as] ‘sons of the living God [the God who lives, the living Lord].’ word study 11 Then the people of Judah [the children of Judah] and of Israel [the children of Israel] will be gathered together [assembled, united], and they will appoint for themselves one leader [head, ruler], and will go up [come up, ascend] out of the land. For great [mighty, significant] will be the day of Jezreel. word study
