1 Thus the heavens [the visible universe and the abode of God] and the earth [the land, the material world] were completed [finished, brought to an end] in all [everything, the entirety] their vast array [host, large group of things]. word study 2 And by the seventh [final, last] day God [Elohim, the supreme Creator] had finished [completed, ended] the work [employment, task] He had been doing [creating, making]; so on that day [period of time, 24 hours] He rested [ceased, stopped working] from all [every, everything] His work [labor, occupation]. word study 3 Then God [Elohim, the supreme Being] blessed [praised and honored] the seventh [sacred, set apart] day and sanctified [consecrated, made holy] it, because on that day He rested [ceased from working, took a pause] from all the work [labor, creative activity] of creation [making, forming] that He had accomplished [finished, completed]. word study 4 This is the account [story, history] of the heavens [the visible universe, sky] and the earth [land, ground] when they were created [brought into being, made], in the day [a specific period, era] that the LORD [Yehovah] God [Elohim, the supreme Creator] made [formed, fashioned] them. word study 5 Now no shrub [bush, small plant] of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant [vegetation, grass] of the field sprouted; for the LORD God [Yehovah, the national name for God] had not yet sent rain [caused it to rain, brought forth water] upon the earth, and there was no man [Adam, the first human] to cultivate [till, serve, work] the ground [land, soil, earth]. word study 6 But springs [a mist, dew] welled up from the earth [land, ground] and watered [to give water, to irrigate] the whole [all, entire] surface [face, presence] of the ground [land, soil]. word study 7 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the one supreme God] formed [shaped, molded like a potter] man [the first human, Adam] from the dust [dry earth or clay] of the ground [the earth, land] and breathed [puffed, inflated] the breath [spirit or wind] of life [chayyim, physical or spiritual existence] into his nostrils [face, countenance], and the man became [existed, came into being] a living [having life, alive] being [soul or essence]. word study 8 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the supreme God] planted [established, fixed] a garden [an enclosed area, a place of beauty] in Eden [a place of pleasure, a paradise], in the east [the front, the direction of the rising sun], where He placed [set, appointed] the man [Adam, the first human] He had formed [shaped, created]. word study 9 Out of the ground [from the earth, the soil] the LORD God [Yehovah, the supreme God] gave growth [caused to sprout, made to grow] to every tree [all kinds of trees, beautiful trees] that is pleasing [desirable, delightful] to the eye [sight, appearance] and good [beneficial, pleasant] for food [something to eat, nourishment]. And in the middle [midst, center] of the garden [an enclosed area, a place of delight] were the tree [a tree; wood, timber, a plank] of life [eternal life, being alive] and the tree [a source of knowledge, a test of obedience] of the knowledge [understanding, discernment] of good [what is beneficial, righteous] and evil [what is harmful, wicked]. word study 10 Now a river [a flood] flowed out of Eden [the garden of pleasure and beauty] to water [give drink and nourish] the garden [an enclosed area], and from there [that location, thence] it branched [was parted, divided] into four [a simple counting number] headwaters [chief rivers, sources of life]: word study 11 The name [identity, character] of the first [one, unique] river is Pishon [a place of gold and precious stones]; it winds [to turn, surround] through the whole [all, everything] land [earth, territory] of Havilah [a region in Arabia, a circle], where [in that place] there is gold [a valuable metal, something yellow or brilliant]. word study 12 And the gold [very pure, good] of that land [country, territory] is pure [good, pleasant], and bdellium [a fragrant gum, possibly amber] and onyx [a precious gemstone, possibly green or blue] are found [exist, present] there [in that place, location]. word study 13 The name [identity, character] of the second river [a flood] is Gihon [a river in the Garden of Eden]; it winds [to turn, surround] through the whole [all, everything] land [earth, territory] of Cush [Ethiopia, the region south of Egypt]. word study 14 The name [identity, character] of the third river is Hiddekel [Tigris, the river flowing to Assyria]; it runs [goes, flows] along the east [front, direction] side of Assyria [the land of the Assyrians]. And the fourth river is the Euphrates [the largest river in western Asia]. word study 15 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the supreme God] took [to get, to seize] the man [Adam, the first human] and placed [to rest, to settle] him in the Garden [an enclosed area, a place of beauty] of Eden [a place of pleasure, delight] to cultivate [to till, to serve] and keep [to protect, to watch over] it. word study 16 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the one supreme God] commanded [to give orders, appoint] him, “You may eat [devour, consume] freely [without restriction] from every [all, everything] tree [a strong and firm object] of the garden [an enclosed area, a place for pleasure], word study 17 but you must not eat [refrain from, abstain] from the tree [a strong and firm object] of the knowledge [understanding, wisdom] of good [pleasant, beneficial] and evil [bad, morally harmful]; for [because, since] in the day [a 24-hour period, a figurative space of time] that you eat [devour, consume] of it, you will surely [certainly, without a doubt] die [to die, either literally or as a punishment].” word study 18 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the supreme God] also said, “It is not [lacking, absent] good [pleasant, beneficial] for the man [Adam, the first human] to be alone [separate, apart]. I will make [create, bring into being] for him a suitable [comparable, like himself] helper [one who assists, supports].” word study 19 And out of the ground [from the earth, the soil] the LORD God [Yehovah, the supreme God] formed [shaped, created] every beast [living creature] of the field [open land, wilderness] and every bird [fowl] of the air [heavens, sky], and He brought them to the man [Adam, the first human] to see what he would name [call, designate] each one. And whatever the man called [named, identified] each living creature [soul, being], that was its name [identity, designation]. word study 20 The man [Adam, the first human] gave names [to call, identify, and establish the nature of] to all the livestock [cattle, domesticated animals], to the birds [fowl, creatures of the air] of the air [heaven, the sky], and to every beast [living creature, animal] of the field [land, earth]. But for Adam [the man, humanity] no suitable [companion, one like himself] helper [assistant, partner] was found [discovered, attained]. word study 21 So the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] God [Elohim, the one supreme God] caused the man [Adam, the first human] to fall [to become unconscious, to be in a deep trance] into a deep sleep [a deep trance, a state of unconsciousness], and while he slept [was in a state of deep rest], He took [removed, extracted] one [a single, unique] of the man’s ribs [side, a part of the body] and closed up [shut, covered] the area [the place, the opening] with flesh [the body, the physical body]. word study 22 And from the rib [side, a part of the body] that the LORD God [Yehovah, the national name for God] had taken [removed, extracted] from the man [Adam, the first human], He made [built, established] a woman [a female person, a wife] and brought [presented, introduced] her to him [towards Adam, to the man]. word study 23 And the man [the first human, Adam] said: “This [now, at this moment] is now bone [the substance or essence] of my bones and flesh [the body, a living being] of my flesh; she shall be called [named, identified as] ‘woman,’ for out of man [a male person, husband] she was taken [removed, extracted].” word study 24 For this reason [because of this union, as a result] a man [male person, individual] will leave [forsake, abandon] his father [parent, ancestor] and mother [female parent, nurturer] and be united [cleave, joined] to his wife [woman, partner], and they will become [be, exist as] one [united, single] flesh [body, human nature]. word study 25 And the man [the first human, Adam] and his wife [woman, female companion] were both [together, as a pair] naked [without clothing, uncovered], and they were not [absent from, lacking] ashamed [feeling guilt or regret, conscious of their vulnerability]. word study
