1 And the word [message, declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came [existed, came into being] to me, saying [to speak, to command], word study 2 “Son [descendant, human] of man [Adam, humanity], set [appoint, place] your face [presence, towards] against [toward, to] the mountains [hills] of Israel [Jacob’s descendants, God’s people] and prophesy [speak under divine influence, declare] against [to, towards] them. word study 3 You are to say: ‘O mountains [hills] of Israel, hear [listen and obey] the word [message, divine utterance] of the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah]! This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines [channels, streams] and valleys [deep, narrow gorges]: I am about to bring [send, unleash] a sword [cutting instrument] against you, and I will destroy [perish, utterly demolish] your high places [cultic platforms, elevations]. word study 4 Your altars [places of sacrifice, sites of worship] will be demolished [torn down, made desolate] and your incense altars [altars for burning incense] will be smashed [broken, shattered]; and I will cast down [throw down, cause to fall] your slain [killed, profaned] before your idols [images, objects of worship, logs or round pieces of wood]. word study 5 I will lay the corpses [dead bodies, carcasses] of the Israelites [sons of Israel, descendants of Jacob] before their idols [images, objects of worship] and scatter your bones [the substance of your being] around [surrounding, encompassing] your altars [places of sacrifice, worship]. word study 6 Wherever you live [in all your dwellingplaces], the cities [towns, populated areas] will be laid waste [desolate, destroyed] and the high places [elevations, cultic platforms] will be demolished [torn down, thrown down], so that your altars [places of sacrifice, worship] will be laid waste [desecrated, made unclean] and desecrated [made profane, defiled], your idols [false gods, images] smashed [broken, shattered] and obliterated [completely destroyed, cut off], your incense altars [places of fragrant offering] cut down [hewn down, knocked down], and your works [deeds, actions] blotted out [erased, abolished]. word study 7 The slain [killed, wounded, or profaned] will fall [be defeated, or lie dead] among you [in your midst, or among your people], and you will know [perceive, learn, or understand] that I [the Lord] am the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. word study 8 Yet I will leave [cause to remain, spare] a remnant [a small surviving group], for some of you will escape [be survivors, flee] the sword [cutting instrument] when you are scattered [tossed about, dispersed] among the nations [Gentiles, non-Israeli peoples] and throughout the lands [countries, territories]. word study 9 Then in the nations [among the Gentiles, in foreign lands] to which they have been carried captive [taken away as prisoners, exiled], your survivors [those who escape, refugees] will remember Me—how I have been grieved [broken, deeply distressed] by their adulterous [faithless, unfaithful] hearts [inner beings, will] that turned away [departed, rebelled] from Me, and by their eyes [gaze, attention] that lusted [played the harlot, were unfaithful] after idols [false gods, images]. So they will loathe [abhor, be disgusted with] themselves for the evil [bad, wicked] they have done [committed, made] and for all their abominations [detestable practices, idolatries]. word study 10 And they will know [be certain, realize] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]; I did not declare [speak, promise] in vain [without purpose, for nothing] that I would bring [do, make] this calamity [evil, bad] upon them. word study 11 This is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: Clap your hands [in grief, with a loud smiting sound], stomp your feet [in distress, with a resounding beat], and cry out [with a loud voice, in anguish] “Alas [ah, expressing sorrow and woe]!” because of all the wicked [morally evil, detestable] abominations [disgusting, idolatrous practices] of the house [family, nation] of Israel, who will fall [be defeated, perish] by sword [violence, war] and famine [hunger, scarcity] and plague [disease, pestilence]. word study 12 He who is far off [at a distance, distant from Jerusalem] will die by the plague [pestilence, disease], he who is near [close by, in proximity] will fall by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon], and he who remains [is left, spared] will die by famine [hunger, lack of food]. So I will vent My fury [intense anger, rage] upon them. word study 13 Then you will know [be certain, have absolute assurance] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], when their slain [killed, profaned] lie among their idols [false gods, objects of worship] around their altars [places of sacrifice], on every high hill [elevated location], on all the mountaintops [highest points], and under every green tree [lush vegetation] and leafy oak [thick, dense foliage]—the places where they offered [gave, presented] fragrant incense [pleasant aroma, soothing fragrance] to all their idols [false deities, man-made objects of worship]. word study 14 I will stretch out [with divine power and authority] My hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] against them, and wherever they live [in all their habitations and dwelling places] I will make the land [the earth, the ground, the country] a desolate waste [a barren and uninhabited place, devoid of life and fertility], from the wilderness [a desert or uninhabited region] to Diblah [a place of desolation and devastation]. Then they will know [have a deep understanding and recognition] that I am [exist as, am present as] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God and ruler].’” word study
