BSA

1 In the eleventh [nearly a year of completion] month of the twelfth year, on the first [a new beginning] day of the month, the word [a message or declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] came to me, saying [to communicate or express], word study 2 “Son of man [human being, a mortal], because Tyre [a major Phoenician city] has said of Jerusalem [the city of peace], ‘Aha [an expression of surprise or excitement]! The gate [door, entrance] to the nations [peoples, Gentiles] is broken [shattered, ruptured]; it has swung open [turned] to me; now that she lies in ruins [is laid waste, desolate] I will be filled [replenished, made complete],’ word study 3 therefore [in this manner, thus] this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘Behold [look, see], O Tyre [a major Phoenician city], I am against you [in opposition to you], and I will raise up [bring forth, cause to ascend] many [a large multitude] nations [Gentile peoples] against you, as the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water] brings up [causes to rise, lifts] its waves [surging waters]. word study 4 They will destroy [completely ruin, overthrow] the walls [fortifications, strongholds] of Tyre [a major Phoenician city] and demolish [tear down, break] her towers [high structures, elevated stages]. I will scrape [sweep away, remove] the soil [dust, dry earth] from her and make her a bare [exposed, uncovered] rock [crag, cliff]. word study 5 She will become a place [for the spreading of nets, a drying place] to spread nets [a spreading-place] in the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water], for I [the Lord, Adonay] have spoken [declared, uttered], declares the Lord GOD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. She will become plunder [spoils, booty] for the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrews], word study 6 and the villages [her daughters, the people living in her villages] on her mainland [in the field, the open country] will be slain [killed, put to the sword] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war]. Then they will know [ascertain, learn, perceive] that I [the Lord] am the LORD [the supreme God, Yehovah].’ word study 7 For this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘Behold [look, take notice], I will bring against Tyre [a major Phoenician city] from the north [the direction of Babylon] Nebuchadnezzar [a powerful king] king of Babylon [a city and empire of confusion], king of kings [the supreme ruler], with horses [swift and powerful animals] and chariots [vehicles of war], with cavalry [horsemen, skilled warriors] and a great company [a large assembly] of troops [a multitude of people]. word study 8 He will slaughter [kill, slay with the sword] the villages [daughters, cities] of your mainland [field, land] with the sword [cutting instrument, knife]; he will set up [make, construct] siege works [forts, battering towers] against you, build [construct, raise] a ramp [mound, earthwork] to your walls, and raise [lift up, hold] his shields [buckler, protective device] against you. word study 9 He will direct the blows [strong strikes, battering actions] of his battering rams [siege engines, war machines] against your walls [protective barriers, city defenses] and tear down [destroy, demolish] your towers [high strongholds, fortified structures] with his axes [cutting instruments, swords]. word study 10 His multitude [large group, abundance] of horses [chariot horses, cavalry] will cover [fill, hide from view] you in their dust [small particles, powder]. When he enters [comes, approaches] your gates [city entrances, doors] as an army [large group of soldiers] entering [coming into] a breached [broken, opened] city, your walls [protective barriers, defenses] will shake [tremble, quake] from the noise [sound, voice] of cavalry [horsemen, chariots], wagons [supply carts, vehicles], and chariots [vehicles, teams of horses]. word study 11 The hooves [claws or split hoofs] of his horses [chariot horses, swift steeds] will trample [tread down, violently abuse] all your streets [outside areas, city roads]. He will slaughter [kill, slay with intent] your people [nation, community] with the sword [cutting instrument, weapon], and your mighty [strong, powerful] pillars [monuments, memorials] will fall [go down, descend] to the ground [land, earth]. word study 12 They will plunder [steal, take by force] your wealth [riches, strength, or power] and pillage [plunder, violently take] your merchandise [goods, trade, or commerce]. They will demolish [break down, overthrow] your walls [protection, barrier], tear down [destroy, throw down] your beautiful [desirable, pleasant] homes, and throw your stones [rocks, weights] and timber [wood, trees] and soil [dust, earth] into the water [midst of the waters, sea]. word study 13 So I will silence [cause to cease, put an end to] the sound [voice, noise] of your songs [musical expressions of praise and worship], and the music [sound, voice] of your lyres [harp] will no longer [not, still] be heard [listened to, heeded]. word study 14 I will make you a bare [exposed to the sun, like a tree without leaves] rock [crag, a strong and secure place], and you will become a place [for the spreading of nets, a spot to lay out fishing gear] to spread the fishing nets [a doomed object]. You will never [not at all, under no circumstances] be rebuilt [established or repaired], for I, the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], have spoken [communicated, declared], declares the Lord GOD [Adonay, a title of reverence and respect].’ word study 15 This is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says to Tyre [a major Phoenician city]: ‘Will not the coastlands [isles, habitable spots] quake [shake, tremble] at the sound [voice, noise] of your downfall [fall, collapse], when the wounded [slain, hurt] groan [cry out in pain, lament] at the slaughter [killing, destruction] in your midst [center, middle]? word study 16 All the [rulers, leaders] princes of the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water] will descend [come down, step down] from their thrones [seats of power, authority], remove [lay aside, take off] their robes [outer garments, clothing], and strip off [remove, take away] their embroidered [with needlework, intricately designed] garments [clothing, apparel]. Clothed [wrapped, covered] with terror [fear, anxiety, trembling], they will sit [dwell, remain] on the ground [the earth, land], trembling [shaking, quivering] every moment [instant, short time], appalled [desolate, devastated, shocked] over you [because of what has happened to you, in astonishment at your fall]. word study 17 Then they will lament [sing a funeral song, take up a lamentation] for you, saying, “How you have perished [been destroyed, come to an end], O city of renown [famous city, renowned town] inhabited by seafaring men [sailors, sea-faring people]— she who was powerful [strong, mighty] on the sea [the Mediterranean, the ocean], along with her people [inhabitants, citizens], who imposed terror [fear, dread] on all peoples [nations, everyone]! word study 18 Now [at this time, in this moment] the coastlands [islands, habitable spots] tremble [are shaken with fear, anxious] on the day [a literal 24-hour period, a figurative space of time] of your downfall [ruin, carcass, aftermath of disaster]; the islands [coastlands, desirable places] in the sea [a large body of water, the Mediterranean] are dismayed [alarmed, agitated, troubled] by your demise [departure, going out, exit].”’ word study 19 For this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘When I make you a desolate [wasted, uninhabited] city like other deserted [uninhabited, abandoned] cities, and when I raise up the deep [tehom, the abyss] against you so that the mighty [great, powerful] waters [a spring or watercourse] cover you, word study 20 then I will bring you down [to the lowest depths, to the underworld] with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit [a cistern, a prison], to the people of antiquity [old time, ancient ones]. I will make you dwell [reside, abide] in the earth [land, ground] below [in the lower parts, in the depths] like the ancient ruins [desolate places, wastes], with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited [lived in, populated] or set in splendor [glory, beauty] in the land [earth, territory] of the living [those who have life, the alive]. word study 21 I will make you an object of horror [a terror, thing of fear], and you will be no more [come to an end, cease to exist]. You will be sought [looked for, searched for], but will never be found [not be seen again, never discovered],’ declares the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah].” word study
