BSA

1 Then Moses [the Israelite leader] and the Israelites sang this song [a musical expression of praise and worship] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]: “I will sing to the LORD [the supreme God], for He is highly exalted [has triumphed gloriously, risen up in majesty]. The horse and rider [one who exercises control] He has thrown [overthrown, cast down] into the sea [a large body of water]. word study 2 The LORD [Jah, the shortened form of God’s name] is my strength [power, might, or boldness] and my song [praise, joyful music], and He has become my salvation [deliverance, victory, or prosperity]. He is my God [Elohim, the supreme God], and I will praise [glorify, honor] Him, my father’s [ancestor’s, forefather’s] God, and I will exalt [lift up, magnify] Him. word study 3 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] is a warrior [man of war, one who fights battles], the LORD [having all power and authority] is His name [fame, renown, reputation]. word study 4 Pharaoh’s [the king of Egypt, a powerful leader] chariots [vehicles used for transportation or warfare] and army [Helech, strength or military power] He has cast [thrown, sent down] into the sea [the Red Sea, a large body of water]; the finest [best, choicest] of his officers [high-ranking captains, leaders] are drowned [sunk, settled down] in the Red Sea [the sea of reeds, a specific body of water]. word study 5 The depths [abyss, the deep waters] have covered them; they sank [went down, descended] there like [as, in the manner of] a stone [rock, weight]. word study 6 Your right hand [full of glory, majestic], O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], is majestic [glorious, become honorable] in power [strength, might]; Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered [dashed in pieces, crushed] the enemy [adversary, one who opposes]. word study 7 You overthrew [crushed, put down] Your adversaries [those who rose up against You] by Your great [abundant, glorious] majesty [excellence, pride]. You unleashed [sent forth, released] Your burning [fierce, intense] wrath [anger, indignation]; it consumed [devoured, ate] them like [as] stubble [dry straw, worthless material]. word study 8 At the blast [by the spirit of Your anger, with the breath] of Your nostrils [face, countenance] the waters [liquid, source of refreshment] piled up [were gathered, heaped together]; like a wall [as a heap, upright] the currents [flowing waters, floods] stood firm [stood upright, were stationary]; the depths [abyss, deep waters] congealed [became thick, frozen] in the heart [center, midst] of the sea [large body of water]. word study 9 The enemy [adversary, one who hates] declared, ‘I will pursue [chase after, follow with hostile intent], I will overtake [catch up to, reach]. I will divide [apportion, share out] the spoils [plunder, booty]; I will gorge [satisfy my desire, fill my soul] myself on them [consume, devour]. I will draw [unsheathe, bring out] my sword [cutting instrument, weapon]; my hand [strength, power] will destroy [bring to nothing, slay] them.’ word study 10 But You blew [with Your wind, Your breath] with Your breath [the breath of life], and the sea [a large body of water] covered [filled up, hid from view] them. They sank [were submerged, went down] like lead [a heavy metal, dense and weighty] in the mighty [great, powerful] waters [a source of refreshment, the deep]. word study 11 Who among the gods [false deities, supernatural beings] is like You, O LORD [Yehovah]? Who is like You—majestic [glorious, full of splendor] in holiness [set-apartness, sanctity], revered [feared, held in awe] with praises [songs of thanksgiving, adoration], performing [doing, accomplishing] wonders [miracles, extraordinary acts]? word study 12 You stretched out [with mighty power, to accomplish] Your right hand [of authority and strength], and the earth [land, ground, or territory] swallowed them up [completely, to destroy, to engulf]. word study 13 With [tender] loving devotion [kindness, mercy] You will lead [guide, direct] the people [nation, community] You have redeemed [bought back, saved]; with Your [divine, mighty] strength [power, might] You will guide [lead, direct] them to Your [sacred, set-apart] holy [consecrated, sanctified] dwelling [habitation, home]. word study 14 The nations [peoples, inhabitants of the earth] will hear [and listen, to obey] and tremble [with fear, be afraid]; anguish [sorrow, intense pain, agony] will grip [take hold, seize] the dwellers [inhabitants, those who sit or remain] of Philistia [the land of the Philistines, Palestina]. word study 15 Then [at that time, in the past] the chiefs [leaders, governors] of Edom [the region of Esau’s descendants] will be dismayed [alarmed, troubled]; trembling [fear, quaking] will seize [take hold, grasp] the leaders [mighty men, strong ones, eilei] of Moab [the land of Lot’s descendants]; those who dwell [reside, sit] in Canaan [the land of the Canaanites, modern-day Israel] will melt away [become faint, dissolve, namogu, like water], word study 16 and terror [fear and dread] and dread [sudden fear] will fall [come upon] on them. By the power [strength, force] of Your arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] they will be as still [silent, unmoving] as a stone [rock] until [as far as] Your people [nation] pass by [cross over], O LORD [Yehovah], until [as far as] the people [nation] You have bought [acquired, redeemed] pass by [cross over]. word study 17 You will bring them in and plant [establish, settle] them on the mountain [hill] of Your inheritance [heritage, possession]— the place [sanctuary, dwelling], O LORD [Yehovah], You have prepared [made, established] for Your dwelling [abode, residence], the sanctuary [holy place, temple], O Lord [Adonay, Master], Your hands [power, strength] have established [founded, set up]. word study 18 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will reign [to advise or counsel, to rule as King] forever [for all eternity, always] and ever [perpetuity, without end]!” word study 19 For when Pharaoh’s [king of Egypt, ruler] horses [chariot horses, cavalry], chariots [vehicles, teams of horses], and horsemen [cavalry soldiers, riders] went into the sea [large body of water], the LORD [Yehovah, God] brought the waters of the sea [the sea’s liquid, the flood] back over them [upon, above them]. But the Israelites [descendants of Jacob, God’s people] walked through the sea [on dry land, in the midst] on dry ground [dry land, solid earth]. word study 20 Then Miriam [a woman who spoke messages from God] the prophetess, Aaron’s [brother and first high priest] sister, took [received, grasped] a tambourine [timbrel, musical instrument] in her hand, and all [every one of] the women followed [went out after, accompanied] her with tambourines [timbrels, musical instruments] and dancing [celebratory movements, joyful worship]. word study 21 And Miriam [the rebellious one, sister of Moses] sang back to them: “Sing [to make music, praise] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], for He is highly [risen up, triumphant] exalted [risen up, majestic]; the horse [chariot horse] and rider [one who rides, controls] He has thrown [ramah, cast, overthrown] into the sea [large body of water].” word study 22 Then Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed] led Israel [the descendants of Jacob] from the Red Sea [a large body of water, the west sea], and they went out into the Desert [a wilderness, an open field] of Shur [a desert region near Egypt]. For three [a quantity of thrice] days they walked [to move from one place to another, to live] in the desert [a wilderness, an open field] without finding [to attain, to discover] water [a liquid, a source of refreshment]. word study 23 And when they came [arrived, went to] to Marah [a place of bitterness], they could not drink [taste, consume] the water [liquid, source of refreshment] there because it was [had become, proved to be] bitter [unpleasant, causing discomfort]. (That is why [for this reason, therefore] it was named [called, designated] Marah [bitterness, a place of trial].) word study 24 So the people [murmured, complained] grumbled against Moses, saying, “What [shall we have, are we to have] are we to drink [to quench our thirst, for refreshment]?” word study 25 And Moses cried out [in distress, with a loud voice] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], and the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] showed him a log [a tree, a piece of wood]. And when he cast it into the waters [the source of refreshment], they were sweetened [made sweet, became pleasant to drink]. There [in that place, at that time] the LORD made for them a statute [a decree, a law] and an ordinance [a judgment, a rule], and there He tested them [proved them, tried their faith], word study 26 saying, “If you will listen carefully [with all your heart, diligently hearken] to the voice [sound, utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God], and do what is right [just, straight] in His eyes [sight, gaze], and pay attention [give ear, obey] to His commands [laws, decrees], and keep [obey, guard] all [every, everything] His statutes [ordinances, regulations], then I will not bring on you any of the diseases [sickness, plague] I inflicted on the Egyptians [the people of Egypt, a northeastern African country]. For I am the LORD [Yehovah, the healer] who heals [mends, restores] you [makes you whole].” word study 27 Then they came to Elim [a place of palm trees], where there were twelve springs of water [refreshment, a source of life] and seventy palm trees, and they camped [pitched their tents, settled] there [in that specific location, at that time] by the waters [the source of life, refreshment]. word study
