Deuteronomy 3

BSA

1 Then we turned [to face, changed direction] and went up [ascended, rose] the road [way, path] to Bashan [a fertile region], and Og [a powerful king] king of Bashan [a region east of the Jordan] and his whole army [all his people, entire nation] came out [went out, emerged] to meet [encounter, befall] us in battle [war, conflict] at Edrei [a chief city, goodly pasture]. word study 2 But the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to me, “Do not [absolutely not, in no way] fear [be afraid or terrified of] him, for I have delivered [given over, handed over] him into your hand [power, authority], along with all [every single one] his people [nation, tribe] and his land [territory, country]. Do to him as you did to Sihon [the Amorite king] king of the Amorites [a Canaanite tribe], who lived [dwelt, resided] in Heshbon [a city east of the Jordan River].” word study 3 So the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme deity] also [even, too] delivered Og [the powerful king of Bashan] king of Bashan [a fertile region east of the Jordan River] and his whole army [all his people, every soldier] into our hands [our power, our control]. We struck them down [smote them, hit them] until no survivor [remnant, one left behind] was left [remaining, spared]. word study 4 At that time [in that era, at the same moment] we captured [seized, took control of] all sixty [a large quantity, numerous] of his cities [towns, settlements]. There was not a single city [town, urban area] we failed to take [did not seize, could not capture]—the entire region [area, territory] of Argob [a fertile land, a specific territory], the kingdom [dominion, rule] of Og [a powerful king, a giant] in Bashan [a fertile region, a land of plenty]. word study 5 All [every single one] these cities were fortified [strengthened, made secure] with high [elevated, lofty] walls and gates [doors, entrances] and bars [locks, bolts], and there were many [a great number, exceedingly] more unwalled [without fortification, open] villages [rural areas, small settlements]. word study 6 We devoted [utterly destroyed, set apart for destruction] them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon [the Amorite king] king of Heshbon, utterly destroying [killing all, putting to the curse] the men [grown men, males], women [females, wives], and children [little ones, infants] of every city [inhabited town, settlement]. word study 7 But all [every single thing, everything] the livestock [cattle, animals, beasts] and plunder [spoils, booty, spoil of the cities] of the cities [towns, settlements] we carried off [took for ourselves, took as prey] for ourselves [as our own, for our benefit]. word study 8 At that time [before this event, in the past] we took [received, captured, to take] from the two [a pair, dual] kings [rulers, monarchs] of the Amorites [a Canaanite tribe] the land [earth, territory] across [beyond, on the other side of] the Jordan [a key river], from the Arnon Valley [a specific region, a brook] as far as [until, till] Mount Hermon [a mountain, a sanctuary]word study 9 which the Sidonians [inhabitants of the city of Sidon] call [to name, designate] Sirion [a peak in the Lebanon mountains] but the Amorites [a Canaanite tribe] call [to name, designate] Senir [a snow-capped mountain, Shenir]word study 10 all [every single one] the cities [towns, settlements] of the plateau [plain, level area], all [the entire region] of Gilead [rocky region, mountainous area], and all [every part] of Bashan [fertile region, fruitful land] as far as [until, up to] the cities [towns, settlements] of Salecah [east of the Jordan River] and Edrei [chief city, goodly pasture] in the kingdom [dominion, ruler’s power] of Og [powerful king, giant of the Rephaim]. word study 11 (For [except] only Og king of Bashan had remained [was left, survived] of the remnant [remainder, excess] of the Rephaim [giants, powerful ones]. His bed [bedstead, couch] of iron [strong metal], nine cubits long and four cubits wide, is still [remains, exists] in Rabbah [great city, capital] of the Ammonites [descendants of Ammon, son of Lot] [measuring].) word study 12 So at that [particular, specific] time we took possession [to occupy, to seize control] of this land [region, territory]. To the Reubenites [descendants of Reuben] and Gadites [tribe of Gad] I gave the land [territory, country] beyond Aroer [near the river Arnon] along the Arnon Valley [brook, riverbed], and half [a portion, a part] the hill country [mountainous region] of Gilead [rocky region, eastern mountain range], along with its cities [towns, populated areas]. word study 13 To the half-tribe [a division of the tribe, a part of the people] of Manasseh [a grandson of Jacob, an ancestor of a large tribe] I gave the rest [remainder, excess] of Gilead [a mountainous region, a rocky area] and all [everything, the whole] of Bashan [a fertile region, a land of abundance], the kingdom [domain, territory] of Og [a powerful king, a giant]. (The entire region [area, territory] of Argob [a region in Palestine, a measured area of land], the whole territory [land, country] of Bashan, used to be called [known as, named] the land [earth, territory] of the Rephaim [giants, a group of powerful people].) word study 14 Jair [son], a descendant of Manasseh, took [possessed, conquered] the whole region [all the country, entire area] of Argob [a fertile land] as far as [unto, up to] the border [boundary, coasts] of the Geshurites [inhabitants of Geshur] and Maacathites [people of Maacah]. He renamed [called, named] Bashan [a fertile region] after himself [by his own name], Havvoth-jair [villages of Jair, towns], by which [after his own name] it is called [named, known] to this day [until now, still]. word study 15 To Machir [the son of Ammiel, an Israelite leader] I gave [assigned, bestowed upon] Gilead [a mountainous region, rocky region east of the Jordan River], word study 16 and to the Reubenites [descendants of Reuben, son of Israel] and Gadites [tribe of Gad] I gave the territory from Gilead [rocky region east of the Jordan] to the Arnon Valley [middle of the valley as a border] (the middle of the valley was the border) and up to the Jabbok River [emptying, a river east of the Jordan], the border [boundary, limit] of the Ammonites [sons of Ammon, a neighboring nation]. word study 17 The Jordan River [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea] in the Arabah [a desert plain near the Jordan River, stretching to the Red Sea] bordered it from Chinnereth [a place in Palestine, near the Sea of Galilee] to the Sea of the Arabah [a large body of water] (the Salt Sea [a sea with high salt content, also known as the Dead Sea]) with the slopes [natural formations, like a spring or ravine] of Pisgah [a mountain in Moab where Moses viewed the Promised Land] to the east [the direction of the sunrise]. word study 18 At that time [when, during that event] I commanded [gave orders, appointed] you: “The LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] has given [bestowed, granted] you this land [territory, region] to possess [occupy, take control of]. All [every, the entire group of] your men of valor [strong men, warriors, those with strength and might] are to cross over [pass over, transition], armed [equipped, prepared] for battle [war, combat], ahead of [before, in front of] your brothers [relatives, kin], the Israelites [descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people]. word study 19 But your wives [female companions, women], your children [little ones, young ones], and your livestock [cattle, animals]—I know [am aware, have knowledge] that you have much [a large amount, numerous] livestock—may remain [stay, dwell] in the cities [towns, settlements] I have given [provided, allotted] you, word study 20 until the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] gives rest [settles and remains in one place, to settle down] to your brothers [male siblings, close relatives, or friends] as He has to you, and they too have taken possession [to take control of, to occupy] of the land [the soil, ground, or territory] that the LORD [the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] is giving [to give, put, or set something] them across [beyond, on the other side of] the Jordan [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea]. Then each of you may return [to turn back, to go back] to the possession [inheritance, something passed down] I have given [to give, put, or set something] you.” word study 21 And at that time [in this specific moment, when] I commanded [gave orders to, appointed] Joshua: “Your own eyes [the ability to see and understand, spiritual perception] have seen [observed, witnessed] all that the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] your God [Elohim, the supreme Creator, your personal God] has done [accomplished, brought about] to these two kings [rulers, leaders]. The LORD [Yehovah, the sovereign Lord] will do [accomplish, bring about] the same [similar, identical] to all the kingdoms [domains, territories, realms] you are about to enter [cross over into, possess]. word study 22 Do not [be terrified, have no fear] be afraid of them, for the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] Himself [He, the personal pronoun emphasizing God’s action] will fight [engage in battle, contend] for you [on your behalf, in your place].” word study 23 At that time [the same occasion, when] I also [earnestly, with intensity] pleaded [besought, entreated] with the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] [to be gracious, show kindness]: word study 24 “O Lord [Adonay, a title of reverence] GOD [Yehovah], You have begun [initiated, started to reveal] to show [reveal, make known] Your greatness [magnificence, glory] and power [strength, mighty hand] to Your servant [one who serves, a bondservant]. For what god [el, a being with strength or power] in heaven [the sky, the spiritual realm] or on earth [the land, the physical world] can perform [accomplish, do] such works [deeds, mighty acts] and mighty acts [powerful deeds, wonders] as Yours [belonging to You, characteristic of Your nature]? word study 25 Please [I pray thee] let me cross over [pass, transition] and see [look upon, gaze at] the good [pleasant, beneficial] land [territory, region] beyond [on the other side of] the Jordan [river, boundary]—that [namely, specifically] pleasant [goodly, beautiful] hill country [mountainous region] as well as [including, along with] Lebanon [the white mountain, the lofty peak]!” word study 26 But the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] was angry [wroth, deeply displeased] with me on account of you [because of your actions, for your sakes], and He would not listen [hear, give attention] to me. “That is enough [let it suffice, do not speak further],” the LORD [the supreme God] said to me. “Do not [let not, refrain from] speak to Me again [any more, still] about this matter [thing, affair]. word study 27 Go to the top [summit, highest point] of Pisgah [a mountain in Moab] and look [lift up your eyes, gaze] to the west [toward the sea, the Mediterranean] and north [Zaphon, the northern direction] and south [the southern direction, toward the desert] and east [the direction of the sunrise, the rising of the sun]. See [behold, observe carefully] the land with your own eyes [with your physical sight, in person], for you will not [under no circumstances, never] cross [pass over, transition] this Jordan [the river that separates the Promised Land from the outside]. word study 28 But commission [charge, give orders to] Joshua [the leader, successor of Moses], encourage [comfort, strengthen] him, and strengthen [make bold, empower] him, for he will cross over [pass before, lead] ahead of the people [the nation, Israel] and enable them to inherit [take possession of, receive as a legacy] the land [the territory, the promised inheritance] that you will see [behold, look upon].” word study 29 So we stayed [abode, remained, dwelt] in the valley [a deep, narrow gorge] opposite [over against, near, facing] Beth-peor [house of Peor, a place east of the Jordan River]. word study
