2 Chronicles 22

BSA

1 Then the people [inhabitants, dwellers] of Jerusalem [the city of peace] made Ahaziah [Jehovah holds or sustains], the youngest [smallest, most junior] son of Jehoram, king [ruler, monarch] in his place [stead, position], since the raiders [band of men, troop] who had come [entered, approached] into the camp [army, military encampment] with the Arabs [Arabians, people from Arabia] had killed [slain, put to death] all the older [eldest, firstborn] sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became [reigned, ruled] king of Judah [the tribe of Judah, the region of Judah]. word study 2 Ahaziah was twenty-two [forty and two] years old when he became king [to reign, rule as a monarch], and he reigned [exercised royal authority] in Jerusalem [the city of peace, capital of Judah] one [a single, unified] year. His mother’s [female parent, maternal figure] name was Athaliah [afflicted of the Lord, a granddaughter], the granddaughter [daughter of a son, descendant] of Omri [pupil of Jehovah, a king of Israel]. word study 3 Ahaziah also [even, too] walked in the ways [path, manner of life] of the house [family, dynasty] of Ahab [a wicked king of Israel], for his mother [maternal figure, caregiver] was his counselor [adviser, guide] in wickedness [evil, wrongdoing, be wicked]. word study 4 And he did [what was morally wrong] evil in the sight [before the eyes, in full view] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], as the house [family, dynasty] of Ahab [a wicked king of Israel] had done, for to his [ultimate, spiritual] destruction [ruin, corruption] they were his counselors [advisers, guides] after the death [passing away, end of life] of his father. word study 5 Ahaziah also [even, too] followed their counsel [advice, plan] and went with Joram [Jehoram] son of Ahab king of Israel [the nation of God’s people] to fight [go to war, engage in battle] against Hazael [one who sees God] king of Aram [Syria, the region] at Ramoth-gilead [a significant location east of the Jordan River]. But the Arameans [Syrians, inhabitants of Aram] wounded [struck, smote] Joram; word study 6 so he returned [to recover, to be healed] to Jezreel [God sows, a city in Israel] to recover [to mend, to heal] from the wounds [blows, injuries] they had inflicted [struck, smitten] on him at Ramah [a city in Palestine] when he fought [engaged in battle, clashed] against Hazael [one who sees God, a king of Aram] king of Aram [also known as Syria]. Then Ahaziah [God holds, a king of Judah] son of Jehoram [God is exalted, a king of Judah] king of Judah [a tribe of Israel] went down [descended, traveled] to Jezreel [God sows, a city in Israel] to visit [to see, to look after] Joram [God is exalted, a king of Israel] son of Ahab [father’s brother, a king of Israel], because Joram [God is exalted, a king of Israel] had been wounded [struck, injured, weak]. word study 7 Ahaziah’s downfall [destruction, ruin] came from [was ordained by] God [Elohim, the supreme Ruler] when he went to visit [to see, to pay his respects to] Joram. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out [came forth, proceeded] with Joram to meet [to encounter, to confront] Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] had anointed [appointed, set apart] to destroy [to cut off, to bring to an end] the house [family, dynasty] of Ahab. word study 8 So while Jehu [the appointed executor of God’s judgment] was executing [carrying out, rooting out] judgment [vindication, punishment] on the house [dynasty, family] of Ahab, he found [discovered, came across] the rulers [princes, leaders] of Judah and the sons [descendants, relatives] of Ahaziah’s brothers [kin, family members] who were serving [ministering, attending to] Ahaziah, and he killed [slew, put to death] them. word study 9 Then Jehu looked for [sought diligently] Ahaziah, and Jehu’s soldiers captured [seized, took hold of] him while he was hiding [concealing himself] in Samaria. So Ahaziah was brought [led, taken] to Jehu and put to death [killed, executed]. They buried [interred, laid to rest] him, for they said, “He is the grandson [son, descendant] of Jehoshaphat, who sought [pursued, inquired of] the LORD [Yehovah] with all [his entire, whole] his heart [inner being, soul].” So no one was left from the house [family, dynasty] of Ahaziah with the strength [power, might] to rule [govern, reign over] the kingdom [dominion, realm]. word study 10 When Athaliah [afflicted of the Lord] the mother [a maternal figure, female parent] of Ahaziah [Jehovah holds or sustains] saw [perceived, looked after] that her son [a descendant, offspring] was dead [had died, ceased to exist], she proceeded [arose, stood up] to annihilate [destroy, kill] all [everything, the whole] the royal [kingly, related to the kingdom] heirs [seed, offspring] of the house [family, dwelling place] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the son of Jacob]. word study 11 But Jehoshabeath [daughter of the king, a woman of faith] daughter of King Jehoram took Joash [given by the Lord, a young prince] son of Ahaziah [Jehovah holds or possesses] and stole him away [secretly rescued, took by stealth] from among the sons of the king [royal princes, the king’s children] who were being murdered [put to death, slain], and she put him and his nurse [caregiver, one who suckles] in a bedroom [private chamber, inner room]. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram [Joram, a king of Judah] and the wife [woman, partner] of Jehoiada the priest [spiritual leader, one who serves God], was Ahaziah’s sister [close relative, one born of the same parents], she hid Joash [concealed, kept secret] from Athaliah [afflicted of the Lord, a queen] so that she could not kill him [take his life, destroy him]. word study 12 And Joash remained [hid in secret, concealed] hidden with them [in close relationship, near] in the house [dwelling place, temple] of God [Elohim, the supreme Lord] for six [a period of completion, maturity] years while Athaliah [afflicted of the Lord, a queen] ruled [reigned, exercised dominion] the land [country, territory, the earth]. word study
