1 Timothy 2

1 First of all [most importantly, above everything else], then, I urge [exhort, plead with] that petitions [supplications, requests], prayers [to God, worshipful communication], intercessions [conversations with God, on behalf of others], and thanksgiving [gratitude, giving of thanks] be offered [made, presented] for everyone [all men, all people, every human being]— word study 2 for kings [rulers, those in high place] and all those in authority [having superiority, prominence]—so that we may lead tranquil [quiet, peaceful] and quiet [peaceable, calm] lives in all godliness [piety, reverence] and dignity [gravity, seriousness]. word study 3 This [what has been said, the preceding instruction] is [truly, genuinely] good [fair, beautiful, noble] and [altogether, completely] pleasing [acceptable, well-pleasing] in the sight [before, in the presence] of God [the Supreme Being, our Creator] our Savior [Deliverer, Redeemer], word study 4 who wants [desires, wills] everyone [all men, every human] to be saved [rescued, delivered from sin] and to come [to go, to arrive] to the knowledge [full understanding, recognition] of the truth [reality, what is true]. word study 5 For [as a reason, explaining] there is one [unique, solitary] God, and [also] there is one [sole] mediator [peacemaker, go-between] between God and men [humanity, people], the man [human, a human being] Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] Jesus [God’s salvation, the Savior], word study 6 who gave [sacrificed, offered] Himself [themself] as a ransom [redemption price] for [on behalf of] all [every person]—the [this specific] testimony [evidence] that was given [borne witness] at [in, during] just the right time [the proper opportunity]. word study 7 For this reason [toward this purpose, with this intention] I was appointed [set apart, ordained] as a preacher [herald of divine truth, messenger], an apostle [delegate, messenger of Jesus Christ], and a faithful [trustworthy, dependable] and true [genuine, authentic] teacher [instructor, guide] of the Gentiles [non-Jewish people, nations]. I am telling the truth [speaking the reality, declaring what is real]; I am not lying [deceiving, speaking falsely] about anything [any matter, any word]. word study 8 Therefore [in consequence of what has been said] I want the men [adult males, husbands] everywhere [in every place, location] to pray [to worship, communicate with God], lifting up [raising, extending] holy [sacred, pure] hands [instruments of power, service], without [separately from, apart from] anger [wrath, strong displeasure] or [and, also] dissension [disputing, reasoning, a process of thinking, questioning]. word study 9 Likewise [in the same way, similarly], I want the women [females, wives] to adorn themselves with respectable [modest, decent] apparel [clothing, attire], with modesty [shamefacedness, humility], and with self-control [mental soundness, sobriety], not with braided [elaborate, fancy] hair or gold [valuable metal] or pearls [precious gems] or expensive [costly, luxurious] clothes [garments, clothing], word study 10 but with good [beneficial, righteous] deeds, as is proper [suitable, fitting] for women [females, wives] who profess [declare, claim] to worship [reverence, have deep respect for] God [the Supreme Being, Creator]. word study 11 A woman [a female, either married or unmarried] must learn [gain understanding, come to know] in quietness [stillness, peaceful atmosphere] and full [complete, absolute] submissiveness [submission, putting oneself under authority]. word study 12 I do not permit a woman [a female, either married or unmarried] to teach [or instruct someone, like a spiritual leader] or to exercise authority [to domineer, or have dominion] over a man [an adult male]; she is to remain [be in a state of] quiet [in quietness, or stillness] [in silence, without speaking]. word study 13 For [as a reason, explaining why] Adam [the first man, father of humanity] was formed [molded, shaped by God] first [before all others, in the beginning], and then [afterwards, next in sequence] Eve [the mother of all living, life-giver]. word study 14 And it was not Adam [the first man, humanity’s representative] who was deceived [tricked, led astray], but the woman [Eve, the mother of all living] who was deceived [beguiled, completely tricked] and fell into transgression [disobedience, sin, lawlessness]. word study 15 Women, however, will be saved [preserved, delivered from harm] through [because of, by means of] childbearing [the act of giving birth, motherhood], if they continue [remain, stay] in [with, characterized by] faith [trust, confidence in God], love [unconditional affection, charity], and holiness [sanctification, being set apart for God], with [accompanied by, marked by] self-control [mental soundness, sobriety]. word study
