BSA

1 Paul [a delegate of Jesus Christ], an apostle of Christ Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] by the command [or decree, according to the will] of God [the one true deity] our Savior [the deliverer, who rescues from harm] and of Christ Jesus [the anointed, the Messiah] our hope [our expectation, our trust in God’s goodness], word study 2 To Timothy [my own son], my true child [genuine] in the faith [trust and confidence in God]: Grace [divine influence, unmerited favor], mercy, and peace from God [the one true deity] the Father [male parent, heavenly Father] and Christ Jesus [the anointed one] our Lord [master, ruler]. word study 3 As I urged [pleaded with, comforted] you on my departure [when I was going, as I traveled] to Macedonia [a region in Greece], you should stay on [remain, persist] at Ephesus [a city in Asia Minor] to instruct [order, command] certain men [one, a person] not to teach [instruct in false doctrine, heresy] false [different, other] doctrines [teachings, instructions] word study 4 or devote themselves to [fables, legends, stories] myths and endless [without limit] genealogies, which promote speculation [debates, questions] rather than the [management, administration, stewardship] stewardship of God’s [plan, work, divine purpose] work, which is [by faith, in trust, through confidence] by faith. word study 5 The goal [end result, ultimate purpose] of our instruction [teaching, commandment] is the love [unconditional, divine affection] that comes from a pure [clean, undefiled] heart [seat of thoughts, emotions], a clear [good, pure] conscience [moral awareness, inner guide], and a sincere [genuine, unfeigned] faith [trust, confidence in God]. word study 6 Some [certain individuals, one] have strayed [deviated, turned away] from these ways [true teachings, doctrines] and turned aside [wandered away, gone astray] to empty [vain, useless] talk [babble, idle chatter]. word study 7 They want [desire, have ambitions] to be teachers [instructors, rabbis] of the law [Jewish law, Torah], but they do not understand [comprehend, perceive] what they are saying [speaking, affirming] or that which [the things, the matters] they so confidently [strongly, boldly] assert [affirm, insist]. word study 8 Now we know [are conscious, have spiritual awareness] that the law [God’s instruction, divine standard] is good [fair, beautiful, morally excellent], if one uses [employs, applies] it [the law] legitimately. word study 9 We realize that law [a set of rules or regulations, divine commandments] is not enacted for the righteous [just, fair, and innocent], but for the lawless [ungodly, disobedient] and rebellious [insubordinate, refusing to submit to authority], for the ungodly [irreverent, wicked] and sinful [habitually doing wrong], for the unholy [wicked, not following God’s laws] and profane [unholy, treating nothing as sacred], for killers [murderers, those who take life] of father or mother [patricide, matricide], for murderers [those who slay others, manslayers], word study 10 for the sexually immoral [fornicators, those who go after loose women], for homosexuals [sodomites, those with unnatural desires], for slave traders [menstealers, kidnappers] and liars [those who intentionally spread false information] and perjurers [those who break an oath or promise], and for anyone else who is averse [opposed, contrary] to sound teaching [wholesome doctrine, the act of teaching or instruction] word study 11 that agrees with [according to, in line with] the glorious [wonderful, of great splendor] gospel [good news, message of salvation] of the blessed [happy, supremely fortunate] God [the one true deity], with which [that was given to me, entrusted to my care] I have been entrusted [trusted, committed to my trust]. word study 12 I thank Christ Jesus [the Anointed One, our Messiah] our Lord [Master, God], who has strengthened [enabled, empowered] me, that He considered [reckoned, counted] me faithful [trustworthy, reliable] and appointed [put, placed] me to service [ministry, work of helping others]. word study 13 I was formerly [previously, before my conversion] a blasphemer [speaking evil against God], a persecutor [treating others unfairly because of their beliefs], and a violent [insolent, abusive] man; yet because I had acted [done, committed] in ignorance [lacking knowledge, unaware] and unbelief [disobedience, lack of faith], I was shown mercy [received compassion, kindness]. word study 14 And the [exceeding abundant, overflowing] grace [unmerited favor, divine influence] of our Lord [God, Master] overflowed [abounded exceedingly] to me, along with the [trust, confidence] faith and [unconditional, selfless] love [agape] that are [exist, reside] in [within, through] Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] Jesus [God is salvation]. word study 15 This is a trustworthy [faithful, reliable] saying, worthy [deserving, of great value] of full acceptance: Christ [the Anointed One] Jesus [God is salvation] came into the world [the cosmos, human society] to save [rescue, deliver] sinners [those who miss the mark, the guilty], of whom I am [consider myself to be, acknowledge as] the worst [chief, foremost]. word study 16 But for this very reason [because of my sinful past] I was shown mercy [received compassion, obtained pardon], so that in me, the worst [chief, foremost] of sinners, Christ Jesus [the Anointed Savior] might display His perfect [all, complete] patience [longsuffering, endurance] as an example [pattern, model] to those who would believe [trust, have faith] in Him for eternal [everlasting, age-during] life [spiritual existence, everlasting fellowship with God]. word study 17 Now to the King [eternal ruler, sovereign] eternal, immortal [incorruptible, never perishing], and invisible [not seen with human eyes], the only [alone, unique] God [the one true deity], be honor [esteem, high respect] and glory [praise, admiration] forever [for all eternity] and ever [throughout all ages]. Amen [so be it, truly]. word study 18 Timothy, my child [son, dear to God], I entrust you with this command [order, instruction] in keeping with the previous prophecies [words of the prophets, revelations from God] about you, so that by them [these prophetic words, spiritual guidance] you may fight [wage war, struggle] the good [beautiful, noble] fight [warfare, spiritual battle], word study 19 holding on to [trust and confidence in] faith [in God’s power and promises] and a [morally aware, sensitive] good conscience [guiding right actions], which some have [completely] rejected [pushed away, refused] and thereby [as a result, consequently] shipwrecked [stranded, lost] their faith [in God’s truth and salvation]. word study 20 Among them are Hymenaeus [a rejecter of the faith] and Alexander [a name given to several men], whom I have handed over [delivered, surrendered] to Satan [the Adversary, accuser] to be taught [instructed, disciplined] not to blaspheme [speak evil, show disrespect]. word study
