The Bible teaches that believers are to be distinct from the world, which is often characterized by sinful desires and rebellion against God. According to 1 John 2:15-18, loving the world and its ways can lead to spiritual opposition to God's will. Jesus Himself noted in John 15:18 that the world would be hostile towards His followers, and James 4:4 warns that friendship with the world is enmity with God. Romans 12:2 encourages believers to be transformed by renewing their minds, rather than conforming to the world's patterns, in order to discern God's will.

For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
