As people age, they are to be treated with respect and dignity, for their years have brought wisdom and experience. The book of Proverbs notes that gray hair is a crown of glory, while Psalms reminds us to not cast aside the elderly, but to support them in their old age. In Titus, older men and women are encouraged to be examples of faith and character, teaching the younger generation. Leviticus also instructs us to rise in the presence of the elderly, showing deference to those who have lived a long life, as seen in Psalms, where a prayer is offered for God's help in old age.

The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty if we are strong— yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
But as for you, speak the things that are consistent with sound doctrine. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, and sound in faith, love, and perseverance. Older women, likewise, are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers or addicted to much wine, but teachers of good. In this way they can train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be discredited. In the same way, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
You are to rise in the presence of the elderly, honor the aged, and fear your God. I am the LORD.
The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty if we are strong— yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due. So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.
