10 Bible Verses on Getting Even

10 verses

In the face of injustice or personal offense, the natural human response is often to seek revenge or retaliation. However, the Bible teaches a different approach, instructing believers to leave vengeance to God, as Romans 12:19 reminds us that He will repay those who have wronged us. Instead of seeking to get even, we are encouraged to respond with gentleness and kindness, as Proverbs 15:1 and James 1:19-20 advise, and to love our enemies, as Jesus teaches in Luke 6:27-38. By choosing this path, we demonstrate trust in God's sovereignty and justice, and reflect the character of Christ. This approach is also echoed in Proverbs 20:22, which warns against hastening to revenge.

Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
Do not say, “I will avenge this evil!” Wait on the LORD, and He will save you.
My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
A fool’s anger is known at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
