7 Bible Verses on Covet

7 verses

Desire for what belongs to others can lead to a destructive path, as warned in Exodus 20:17, where coveting is listed among the Ten Commandments. Jesus teaches in Luke 12:15 that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of their possessions, highlighting the danger of allowing material desires to consume us. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in Romans 13:8-10, he emphasizes the importance of loving one's neighbor as oneself, rather than coveting what they have. By storing up treasures in heaven, as Matthew 6:19-21 encourages, believers can shift their focus away from earthly desires and towards a more eternal perspective.

And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ’
