12 Bible Verses on Being Like the World

12 verses

Believers are cautioned against adopting the values and behaviors of the world, which are often in conflict with God's will. According to 1 John 2:15-17, loving the world and its desires can lead to spiritual darkness, while Romans 12:2 urges Christians to be transformed by renewing their minds, rather than conforming to worldly patterns. James 4:4 warns that friendship with the world is enmity with God, and Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:24 that no one can serve both God and worldly interests. By rejecting worldly influences, believers can instead cultivate a deep devotion to God.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
James 4:4
You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God.
No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ.
So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept My word, they will keep yours as well. But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world.
Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
